Petition to tag Ash as Ash Morgenstern or Fairchild, since Faeries don't have last names.
Unless... is it Queenson??
Some Lord of Shadows Ash and the SQ thoughts before I crash, since I’m still up with gosh darn ear infection. (Talking to many wonderful people, might I add, especially @dreamergirl6.)
He is absolutely the Seelie Queen and Sebastian’s kid. No questions about it.
His mama was super mad at everyone after the Dark War and the Cold Peace but then she realized she was pregnant and she made a Decision. Being mad at people could wait.
She’d been pregnant before, but she’d never kept them. Having a ridiculous amount of children was the Unseelie King’s thing. This one she wanted though. Not out of any affection for Morgenstern, though she had liked him. No, she really wanted to see what would happen if you mixed a lethal dose of angel and demon blood with her own angelic and demonic heritage. Sebastian was dead, she wasn’t getting another chance, she was keeping this baby and seeing what it could do, because the chances it would be able to shoot fire out of its hands were not insignificant.
So she bowed he head, accepted the Cold Peace, refused to show her face in public, locked herself away, and hid in her realm, where time passed differently.
The longer she stayed pregnant, in the confines of Faerie, attended only by a few of her most trusted servants, the fonder she got of the little creature growing inside of her. It was a part of her, after all. It would be marvelous.
When he was born, wriggling and screaming and red, she wasn’t quite sure what to do. She let an adviser help name him, because honestly if the boy took after his father at all he’d rename himself by the time he was twenty anyways. She held him, awkwardly. She loved him. Then, she let him grow up.
Disappointingly, there were no signs of fire as he started toddling. Really he didn’t start to show any power in particular other than a general faerie temperament (and blessedly, not a hint of Shadowhunter inclinations) until he hit ten.
She still loved him, even before he could end worlds and destroy angels. Children were foreign to her, but she liked the way he smiled at her and she liked holding him close and she liked showing him how to talk, how to hold himself, how to navigate the small closed world she had created for him in Seelie style.
He threw the worst tantrums sometimes. He made threats, had mood swings, forgot himself. Understanding did not come easily to him, and neither did caring. Sometimes he was very much his father’s child. Training the worst of that out of him took years. Teaching him how to mind himself, how to react in a controlled way, how to handle stress and other people.
Sometimes, she had to admit, she wasn’t the best role model, but she tried. She knew she was starting from a bad place just genetically, that neither of his parents were stunning examples of empathy, and that Ash would need a lot to make up for it and at least learn how to pretend enough to trick other people into liking him. Mostly, she succeeded and sometimes she wondered if she’d overshot and made him into an actually decent person.
He did try to teach her things as well. Lying, for example. It seemed to be the only thing he’d really taken away from the human side of his heritage.
That and a seemingly endless talent for stabbing things, but she hadn’t expected anything else from Sebastian Morgenstern’s child. (And hers.)
At his best, he could be endlessly charming. He loved stories about Faerie, the courts and the power struggles, and she preferred telling him about those over the complicated world of humans and angels. Every once in a while, he would beg a story about his family, any relatives other than her. She could barely remember who had bore her millenia ago and the rest of the Fairchild/Morgenstern clan was a blur to her, so most of them ended up being about Clary.
If there was one thing she tried to teach him, it was how to do things gently. Not to pitch a fit and start a war, that never ended well, she knew from experience. Speak softly, she advised, use the power you have, and make the world work the way you want it to. It seemed like good advice to keep her beautiful, dangerous boy out of trouble.
When he was kidnapped she wanted to rage. She wanted to go and stab the stupid King in the throat. She wanted her son back. Instead, she made and plan. She smiled, she spoke softly, and she figured out a way to get him back.
*twitching with rabies foam pouring from my mouth* where’s the wicked powers.. where’s the wicked powers..
I really hope we get to see Ash interact with Jace at some point in twp. Here is this man, who looks almost exactly like your serugate dad, except it’s not him, except it kinda is, because this is him without half as a much trauma your bio-dad gave him.
