I sent my stupid invisible daughter to stupid school picture day and I paid $15 for printouts and she didn’t even show up on camera. I love her as much as I can
People in their weekday high-vis drink beer next to be-suited ones, older women in the earthy tones and pointed collars of the 1970s and of all ages with the names of black metal bands on their chests stand in short lines in front of stalls and tents and vans kitted out with makeshift kitchens. You watch a brushtailed animal steal some uneaten food and then run quickly away, while drifters haul crates and pack up stages. Gum leaves crunch under their feet. You are eating deep-fried tofu from a paper plate with these red and white squares all over, and the oil is starting to make them disintegrate and go see through (like you feel). Summer is almost over, and you let most of it move past you this year. But there are unwired crystal chandeliers hanging in the trees over the paths, and the glass clinks very lightly when the wind moves them. At dusk you see black shapes shift against the purple part of the sky and the glass makes the same sounds again when they fly past, if you listen closely enough to hear below the shrieking. You and a friend talk about life (in the abstract) and your lives (in the painfully minute) and your plans for the next weeks, and then finally your families (you both have families with missing parts now) by pausing for the noise of the bats and yelling over the screaming terror coming from inside the haunted-house ride. Not all cries are a horror, some just speak of the heady frisson of animals being in the world. You know that now. Summer is almost over. Hot air moves gratefully past the back of your neck. You haven't been outside in so long.
