The hum of S.T.A.R Labs at night was a familiar comfort. Machines whirred softly, monitors flickered with data, and the faint hum of electricity coursing through the building filled the air. It was late, too late, but sleep never came easy these days. I sat at my desk, fingers idly tapping against a notepad filled with half-finished equations. Theories on quantum fields, energy signatures, distractions. Anything to keep my mind from spiraling down the path it always took.
Caitlin.
My twin sister was always the stronger one. Not physically, not in the traditional sense, but in a way she carried the weight of the world on her shoulders without breaking. But I saw it. The cracks forming beneath the surface, the way her smiles didn’t reach her eyes anymore, the exhaustion in her voice when she assured me she was ‘fine’.
I can see every tear you’ve cried
Like an ocean in your eyes
All the pain and the scars have left you cold
I can see all the fears you face
Through a storm that never goes away
Don’t believe all the lies that you’ve been told
She wasn’t and that scared me more than anything. The weight of her powers, of everything that we’ve been through… The loss, the battles, the constant danger. It was pressing down on her, and for the first time in our lives, I felt truly powerless. I wasn’t a metahuman. I couldn’t heal like Barry, make portals like Cisco, or control ice like Caitlin. I was just… me. A physicist. A man with no abilities in a world where powers often meant survival. But I had to do something.
I’ll be right here now
To hold you when the sky falls down
I will always
Be the one who took your place
When the rain falls
I won’t let you go
I’ll be right here
A soft knock on the door pulled me from my thoughts. I looked up to see Caitlin standing there, arms crossed over her chest, looking smaller than I had ever seen her.
“Hey.” She said her voice barely above a whisper.
“Hey.” I echoed, pushing away from my desk.
“You okay?” She hesitated. That was answer enough.
With a sigh, I stood up and walked over, wrapping my arms around her without a second thought. She stiffened for a moment, then melted into me, her fingers clutching at the fabric of my lab coat like it was the only thing keeping her grounded.
“I’m so tired…” She admitted, voice breaking.
“I don’t know if I can keep doing this.” My heart clenched. I rested my chin against the top of her head, my hold tightening.
“You don’t have to do this alone.” I muttered.
“I’m right here, Cait, always.” She sniffled, laughing weakly.
“You don’t have powers.”
“So?” I pulled back just enough to look her in the eyes.
“I don’t need powers to be your brother, to have your back. I don’t care what happens, what you become, or what you think you have to carry, I’ll be here. Every damn step of the way.” Her lower lip trembled.
“What if I lose myself?” I cupped her face gently, my thumb brushing away a stray tear.
“Then I’ll find you.” And it seemed like she believed me.
I will show you the way back home
Never leave you all alone
I will stay until the morning comes
I’ll show you how to live again
And heal the brokenness within Let me love you when you come undone
The weight of Caitlin’s exhaustion pressed against me, her fingers gripping the fabric of my coat like she was afraid to let go. I didn’t move. I just held her, grounding her, making sure she knew she wasn’t alone.
After a long moment, Caitlin exhaled shakily and stepped back, rubbing her arms.
“I didn’t mean to dump all that on you.” She muttered, trying to pull herself together, but her voice lacked conviction. I gave her a pointed look.
“Cait, you don’t have to act like you’re okay when you’re not. Not with me.” She let out a weak chuckle.
“You always act like the older sibling.”
“I am. By ten minutes.” I reminded her, crossing my arms.
“And I still turned out smarter.” That earned me a small, genuine smile.
“Debatable.” I rolled my eyes but didn’t push further. Instead, I leaned back against my desk, watching her closely.
“Is it the powers?” I asked gently.
“Or something else?” Caitlin hesitated.
“Both.” I didn’t say anything, just waited. I knew her well enough to know she needed time to piece her words together.
“I feel like I’m losing myself…” She admitted, finally meeting my gaze.
“Every day, it gets harder to separate me from… from her.” She didn’t need to say the name. I knew. Killer Frost. Caitlin ran a hand through her hair, exhaling sharply.
“Sometimes I feel like I’m in control like I can balance it. And then, other times, I wake up and I don’t even remember what I did. It’s like… she’s creeping in, waiting for the moment I slip.” Her voice wavered.
“What if one day I can’t fight her off?” I clenched my jaw. I hated this. Hated that she was forced to carry something so heavy, something no one, not Barry, not Cisco, not anyone, truly understood the way I did. Because I was there since the beginning. Before S.T.A.R. Labs. Before the explosion. Before all of it.
“You will fight her off.” I said firmly.
“Because you’re Caitlin Snow. You’re brilliant, stubborn as hell, and stronger than you give yourself credit for.” She swallowed hard.
“And if I lose?” My expression softened.
“Then I’ll find you.” She let out a watery laugh, shaking her head.
“You say that like it’s that easy.”
“It is that easy.” I countered.
“You’re my sister, Cait. You think I’d ever let you go?” I scoffed.
“Please, I’m annoyingly persistent and you know it.” That finally earned me a full laugh. She sniffled, wiping her eyes.
“That you are.”
A comfortable silence settled between them. I could see the tension in her shoulders loosen, just a little. It wasn’t a solution, and it wouldn’t magically make everything okay, but it was a start.
“Come on.” I said, nodding toward the monitors.
“Stay for a while. Help me figure out why Barry keeps breaking the laws of physics every time he sneezes.” Caitlin let out a laugh.
“Don’t remind me.” She stepped forward, glancing at his notes before grabbing a pen. I smirked. I would do anything to make sure my sister was okay.
