ADOW 2x07: Diana Interacts With the Book of Life
Diana is indeed the only one who can “read” the Book of Life.
It has been thrilling to watch Diana’s power and confidence grow this season. She was completely in her element when it came to “opening” the Book. (It was also fascinating to watch a firedrake take form from the book’s magic.🔥🐉)
Emperor Rudolf knew that Diana was “precious”--but clearly he didn’t know that between Diana, Matthew and Gallowglass he stood no chance of keeping her.
So I'm re-reading the trillogy whilst waiting for some new books to be delivered and I they are better 2nd time around. I've actually enjoyed this series so much because the world that has been built is so rich with details.
There are lots of little things in ADOW that seem insignificant but make more sense 2nd time around.
And also I can get more into the story this time around knowing how much I come to love the characters by the 3rd book.
This time around i am absolutely loving Aunt Sarah and Matthews relationship.
Like its hilarious and I only appreciated it half as much before.
Diana and Ysabeau's relationship has a much clearer and warmer evolution but Matthew and Aunt Sarahs relationship has this hilarious progression that is almost like two siblings arguing.
Like they start off so suspicious of each other, Stubborn and snippy.
Then when Sarah uses her magic to help heal Diana and he's impressed... like a little school boy learning cool new tricks.
But then this like begrudging fondness develops between them they are still quite blunt with each other but there's humour there too. Reading this a second time there were some bits that absolutely had me in stitches...like when Sarah takes the piss out of Matthew after catching him and Diana together ,sarcastically calling him Casanova. There no real menace here, Sarah is just like oh ffs theyre snogging in the orchard again thats not exercise.
And like when Sarah gets out the Bishop Grimoire and her and Matthew start talking about what they could use to test the Page and Diana just sits there forgotten and exasperated and Em says something like" Guess you're one of the family now then" because Sarah does not normally let anyone see the Bishop 'cookbook' and they're just ignoring both Diana and Em and getting excited about testing stuff.
They also make a really good team without really knowing it, like when they're looking at the Page from Ashmole 782
Sarah says how it feels heavy (we come back to that in book 3 because she's 100% right) but Matthews like "is it???" Because you know, he's both a Vampirically strong and also 100% idiot.
And Matthew says it smells funny (we come back to that in book 2 because he's right) but Sarah is like "Nah just smells old" Because you know, she doesn't have vampiric sniffy powers and is 100% stubborn.
And knowing whats to come im sat here laughing because omfg guys you've literally nearly cracked the case in 30 seconds without realising it but you are both identically idiotic and pig headed.
And like...Reading these bits again with knowledge that by the 3rd book Matthew and Aunt Sarah are so very family that he keeps a box of dorky Witch bobbleheads on hand for Sarah's car...its just damn wholesome.
I love Sarah in the TV show but I do think we missed out on seeing some of the more childish bickering, oddly sweet and funny moments between these two.
Ashmole 782 in 1591
Ashmole 782. I just loved this scene from “A Discovery of Witches”.
Friday, September 18
Diana Bishop calls up Ashmole 782, examines it and returns it to the stacks despite sensing its magic.
Ashmole 782 is sitting in some old attic because someone accidentally took it home over a hundred years ago from the Bodleian and was too anxious to bring it back because they didn’t want to get in trouble.
