Different anon but uhhhh what do you think is the most neurodivergent thing gojo ever did in canon? And how did that come across or impact your writing of OTT!Gojo, if at all?
Sorry if this is a bad question it's hard to come up with a good one lol. I just like audhd Gojo
Breathed.
It's been three months and that's all I can come up with, anon. I just find it really hard to talk about this topic in a concise manner and I'm also indecisive, so I'm struggling to choose one thing without being deeply unserious. Same as I can't identify one thing about myself probably (it's the fog horns). It's a collection of traits and behaviours that combine to make up the individual, isn't it?
It's really just *waves hand* the way that he is, but I don't want to give you a cop out answer, so let me list several things across four categories, beginning with the least serious! To avoid this getting really long, however, I'm thinking of answering your question about Over the Threshold Gojo in a separate post. The short answer is "it's woven into the very fabric of the story", but I have a lot I could talk about! Would any of you like to read that post?
For now, what do I think is the most neurodivergent thing Gojo ever did in canon? Well, before we get into it, a quick note about something that I've never seen anyone mention in their discussions or depictions of autistic/ADHD/AuDHD Gojo, at least on the English speaking side of the fandom.
I think it's really important to judge Gojo's character within the context of his own culture (and, indeed, the culture of the person who created him). This research article (which is well worth a read!) published in the Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology posits that we should adopt a sociocultural model of disability on the basis that "the neurotypical world in which an autistic person is situated varies considerably depending on the cultural customs and values unique to the pocket of the world from which they originate", i.e. people experience autism differently depending on the cultures they grow up and live in.
Gojo is a Japanese person, born and raised in Japan. He is also a man. I always keep these factors in mind when analysing or writing his character, but it seems especially important when looking for neurodivergent traits. Okay, let's begin!
Fun things to support AuDHD Gojo
He's always late. Man can teleport, there's literally no good reason for him to be late except for ADHD time blindness.
According to Gege, he eats sweets to stimulate his brain. It makes me wonder how Gojo would fare on stimulant medication with the Six Eyes, but it's both illegal and highly stigmatised in Japan. Of course, that doesn't mean he couldn't have tried it...
He's impulsive, especially when it comes to teaching opportunities for his students. However, his impulsive decisions always seem rooted in logic so it balances out. He's a logical guy on the whole, honestly, which is another point for autistic Gojo.
He supposedly has a "bad personality". People find him annoying and he often clashes with authority figures because his behaviour is deemed disrespectful. This is a big ADHD mood, but it also works through an autistic lens, especially in Japan. Let's dig into this in the next section!
Less fun things to support AuDHD Gojo
According to the article I linked earlier, the structured nature of the language and clear "rules" for communication based on social hierarchy and context in Japan could make it easier for autistic people to follow scripts, which are used more readily in everyday Japanese communication with the goal of minimising uncertainty. However, you have to know the scripts in order to be able to use them!
In a country with a system of honorific speech (keigo), deviation from social norms is noticeable and even alarming in some cases, which is why we often see deliberate deviations used in untranslatable ways in manga, sometimes emphasised with katakana or bouten to draw attention to how out of place they are. This is why Geto tells Gojo he should change the pronoun he uses, much to Gojo's surprise and chagrin. The deviation from social norms and expectations communicates something all by itself, even if the meaning is the same, and Geto recognises that where Gojo doesn't.
We don't have a keigo equivalent in English, so we do a lot more with tone of voice instead. However, we are also capable of adjusting our language to convey different intentions. An example is something like "Move over!" vs "Excuse me, please could I just squeeze behind you? Thank you! Sorry!" (a very Bri'ish example). Both can be either appropriate or rude depending on the circumstances and the person you're interacting with.
You only learn how to navigate these types of social situations "appropriately" as you get older, but until it's pointed out to them directly (usually after a "blunder"), autistic people often aren't aware of unspoken "rules", especially those which seem inefficient and/or illogical. For similar reasons, autistic people are sometimes seen as "childlike", simply because they don't know a certain behaviour is perceived as childish until someone tells them, and that's how I always saw this moment during the Hidden Inventory arc.
Geto is essentially saying, "You shouldn't talk like that anymore, you're too old to get away with that kind of overfamiliarity now". Gojo is socially unaware — unaware how he comes across, how he sounds, maybe even that he's "grown up" (I like this reading in the context of JJK and protecting youth). My autistic king.
Of course, this exchange takes on extra meaning later, but at that point in the story, I think it's just Geto quietly making him aware of something that will impact how he's received by others for his own sake as much as theirs. The fact that he says "I've been meaning to say this for a while" suggests that Geto has been watching Gojo's interactions for some time, second guessing whether to say something before finally deciding he needs to intervene when he sees that he isn't picking up on those unspoken social cues.
As an aside, I love that Geto's ability to make himself seem unthreatening by following social norms is completely at odds with how threatening he actually is, while the opposite is true for Gojo (unless you're a curse or curse user). Gege cooked with that. To me, it really feels like a criticism of the emphasis on conformity and politeness in Japanese society, especially in light of chapter 236 which brings us nicely onto the next section.
Much less fun things to support AuDHD Gojo
To me, chapter 236 of JJK is Gojo’s “unmasking”. I wrote an analysis of Gojo’s character in 236 and though I didn't mention autism explicitly, it was implicit on my end. Aside from the fact that I think Gojo and Geto sitting back to back with Nanami and Haibara is a lovely visual representation of the double empathy problem (which I touched on in this post about empathy), I've said everything there so I won't repeat myself.
This post (and especially its tags) from right after the chapter came out says it in a much more concise way, but Gojo’s upset pout when Nanami says "You never cared about protecting people!" breaks my heart, especially in light of everything he had just said to Geto about how he was never truly able to connect with anyone after he left. For me, the panel below just summarises the experience of being autistic in this world.
Not fun at all things to support AuDHD Gojo
Well, the way that Gojo is infantilised by a huge part of the fandom, despite being a highly competent, intelligent, and responsible adult. It's rife in depictions of Gojo across his ships (with a correlation to his t/b configuration) and it bothers me enormously. I can't think of a more AuDHD experience than being infantilised even when you're the most accomplished person in the room, so I'm taking that as evidence all by itself.
—
And that's all! For the longest time, I've been thinking about writing a series where Gojo is explicitly autistic. I'd like to bring a different perspective to the table and address some of the less "palatable" aspects of being autistic head on without compromising on his canon characterisation (to the best of my ability) and without putting him in a box. However, I'm reluctant for so many reasons. We'll see!
Hope this answer was enjoyable, anon! Sorry it took this long. This topic is close to me and it's easy to overthink it. I wanted to do it justice, but I only managed to answer half your question and even then, barely! Argh!
I'd love to ask about absolutely all of them!! But I must go with bellboy, because I'm so curious 👀
This one feels like the biggest misdirection from my wip game, even though it isn't really a misdirection at all. There is a bellboy. And he's really cute even!
It's just that there's also the toxic cult leader who checks into the hotel he works at 😭
I don't know how you feel about this stuff and I certainly don't want to jumpscare you, so here's your warning for a problematic power imbalance caused by an 18/28 age gap as well as a wealthy customer abusing the fuck out of his privileges. No pressure to read any further if that simply isn't for you!
i must ask you about horticulturalist x beekeeper 👀 truly the most idea ever
I shared the backstory for this one in response to another ask from my wip game, so you, my dear friend, get a big fat snippet instead! Here's Gojo's first visual encounter with cult leader beekeeper Geto!
His skin is like honey, shimmering with a light sheen of sweat. Where they catch the sunlight, his eyes are like honey, too. Hell, even his voice is like honey, dripping all sticky sweet off his tongue like that. He’s just a honeypot of a human in general. ‘Focus, Gojō.’ Did he say that out loud? ‘—so when I see people in my comment section calling it a gimmick? Honestly, my heart goes out to them.’ On the screen, Getō settles a hand over said heart, seemingly uncaring of the little fuckers swarming around his naked body. Satoru finds it hard to care about them, too, honestly. The image of his fingers pressing into the relaxed muscle of his chest—the ample relaxed muscle of his chest—is a little… Well, it’s a distraction to say the least. ‘Then why don’t you try listening to what he’s saying instead of ogling his tits, you absolute dog?’ Satoru tries. He really, really tries. ‘—have become completely disconnected from Mother Nature. We believe ourselves to be above the other species we share this planet with. More and more, we seek to remove ourselves from the natural world all around us, retreating into our houses, our phones—’ He smiles at the camera, and his pretty eyes flash like golden coins with a chocolate centre. ‘—and yes, our clothes. Personally, I prefer to go wild.’ Getō gestures at the sea of blue flowers all around him, as though he’s accidentally stumbled upon a slice of natural paradise. And that is funny actually. It’s a wildflower, sure, but it doesn’t belong in their country. And there’s nothing wild about the field he’s sitting in either. It’s clearly a cultivated crop, the yearly spring show of Nemophila menziesii in Ibaraki. It’s a fucking photo spot. He probably paid entry just to make his little video, unless he keeps hives there, too. It’d make sense. What Satoru recognises as a monoculture, Getō probably calls a “bee pasture”. Quaint. ‘When I shed the manmade barriers between my body and our beautiful home,’ he says. ‘I am embracing the mother that those people are estranged from.’ He raises his forearm to study the honeybees crawling across his skin, smiling softly as they lap at the honey he presumably drizzled there. ‘I’m only sorry that they can’t imagine a world where simply existing the way my mother made me is anything more than a marketing ploy.’ Satoru can’t help noticing that his biceps bunch way more than the position of his arm demands. What a fucking conman. Good one, though. ‘Are you serious?’ ‘Come off it, Utahime! You’re looking, too!’ ‘“But it’s dangerous!”, they say.’ Getō turns to the camera again, and though Satoru is sure every single word that falls from his lips is a carefully practised lie, he admits he’s enraptured by the performance. ‘Respect nature and she’ll respect you in turn.’ It seems like even the wind is a paid actor, sending his loose hair fluttering over his forehead and across his broad shoulders at exactly the right moment. Either that or Mother Nature is real and she’s just as fucking charmed as Satoru. This guy’s charisma is insane. ‘Gojō, I swear to god.’ ‘If my girls sting me, then that’s on me.’ With his hand over his heart again, Getō looks guilt stricken. Forlorn, even. ‘That’s on me. That’s how they tell me that I’ve overstepped, because that’s what humans do, isn’t it?’ He lets out a humourless laugh. ‘It’s what men do. We overstep.’
‘I cannot believe people are falling for his bullshit!’ ‘Eh, I’m kind of falling for it.’ ‘And I’m not the one under threat here. I’m not the one struggling to survive against a species that seeks to exploit and violate me at every turn.’ The combination of puppy dog eyes and a beefcake build is frighteningly effective. From the delicate way he tucks his hair behind a stretched ear to his decision to build an entire fucking business around a matriarchal species whose males commit violent sexual suicide, everything about Getō seems carefully calculated to exude a uniquely non-threatening brand of masculinity. ‘When a honeybee stings a human, it’s at the cost of her own life. Just think about that for a moment.’ Getō certainly does. He indulges in a performative pause, closing his eyes and creasing his brow as though he’s remembering every single honeybee he’s murdered because he insists on beekeeping shirtless. Satoru wonders if he counts the ones he’s crushed under his frames while harvesting his precious honey. Not that Satoru cares, but he clearly does. Pretends to, anyway. ‘She pays the ultimate price to defend her sisters,’ he says, opening his eyes with steely resolve. ‘So if a few little pricks is the price I have to bear in order to help these gorgeous girls? I’m more than willing to pay.’ Satoru can’t help laughing when a jaunty little tune suddenly starts playing, social icons popping up on screen as he shifts to his salesman persona. Utahime, meanwhile, is furious in a way he’s never seen her before. ‘If you want to help save the bees, head to the link in the description where I’m currently offering 50% off for first time subscribers to Getō’s Girls, including a personalised video for those of you who sign up to my Queen tier this month—’ ‘Don’t you dare, Gojō.’ Under duress, he doesn’t sign up for the Queen tier. Does sign up for the Worker one though. Later, after everyone else has headed home for the day. He would have gone for the basic Drone package, but the fraudster threw in a free sample pack Satoru just couldn’t pass up. Useless though it is, he finds he wouldn’t mind a taste of Getō Suguru’s Royal Jelly. Just to see what all the fuss is about. Besides, it’s for research purposes. It’s reconnaissance of the enemy. It’s infiltration of the cult. And if it isn’t? Well, it only cost a couple of hot chocolates from the cafeteria and perhaps his soul. Satoru decides it’s a price he’s more than willing to pay. He’s one of Getō’s Girls now.
Promise this isn't just a rebranded camboy trope fic. If anything, it's a manifesto. I don't know if/when I'll finish it though. I have a feeling this one is a little too self-indulgent to be appealing to most people, but let me know if I'm wrong and you'd like to see it completed!
And remember, guys: plant diverse and plant native!
I need more SatoSugu shippers on my dashboard... So hello new friend, you're cool, I'm following you!
(read to the tune of "we're having soft tacos later")
Ahhh cute! Welcome in! Please make yourself comfortable ♥ Shall we share SatoSugu headcanons in the replies/reblogs to help anon find people to follow? I'll go first!
Satoru learned to fight the way we see him in JJK 0 by sparring with the unflappable Suguru, who always managed to remain just beyond his grasp, smiling infuriatingly the whole while. Suguru was always the superior of the two in close combat, but the worst thing was he made it look easy, weaving and dodging around Satoru like it was a dance. It forced Satoru to fight hard to keep up — and keep his dignity intact!
In the ten years they were apart, no one ever challenged Satoru like that again, so old habits kicked in at the first sign of a real threat. That's why poor Miguel has Suguru to thank for the worst beatdown of his life.
hi glo! I stumbled on this beeeautiful idol gojo art by @/izeichan on pinterest and figured I'd send it your way in case you hadn't seen it!
byeee👋
I spotted this while clearing my inbox just now? How did I miss this?!
Thank you for sharing the pretty idol Gojo with me, my beloved ✨ And guess what? This is a sign. I worked on chapter 16 today. We're so back. WE'RE SO BACK. I'm not making any promises on timelines because I'm actually going to Japan next month (and I'm fucking devastated because literally the only thing I wanted to see was the Tokyo Opera City concert hall where Satoru and Suguru recorded Blue in chapter 11. It's closed for construction. I genuinely cried 🥲) and if I can't finish it before I leave, it won't be until May at the earliest. Christ...
Anyway, before I doom spiral on that, this chapter has its own playlist, same as the last two in this special three chapter run. As a little treat, I'm going to share a song from it, and very fittingly, it's one that you personally made me aware of all the way back in May 2024. You've been here for over two years now (if we include your anonymous asks before that) and it means the world. Thanks for supporting me for all this time, @supportingwomenswrongs, and I'm sending you extra love and hugs through the internet today ♥
coming here because obviously i have not stopped thinking about chapter 16 since reading it last night and realized i didn't even mention the pompompurin mug in my comment (bc this is when i was locked in and stopped writing all my thoughts down). back then i thought it was working on a psychological level but then that this chapter? god, it's both. it's both and i'm screaming into my pillow about it.
oh and by the way, i always think of ott when i see pompompurin and cinnamonroll next to each other in the store. which is frequent where i live lol. i think i once sent you a pic of their plushies from my main (something i never do) because i couldn't resist 😋
okay, that's all, ily bye!
- @massivelyanerd
Before I yap and yap and yap, you did indeed share your CinnaPom photo! I remember it vividly! Actually, I've received quite a lot of photos from readers who've bought CinnaPom merch because of Over the Threshold over the last two years, and it never ceases to amaze me. The thought of real people thinking of my story out there in the big wide world blows my mind. It makes me feel really connected to everyone and reminds me why sharing art matters, so thank you again. It means more than you know.
Talking of poor Pompompurin, let's discuss this little detail in chapter 16. To my knowledge, you are the first person to catch this, dear lennie, and it makes me very, very happy indeed ♥
Sometimes I question why I'm wasting my time bothering with such tiny details. I could write this story much faster if I wasn't so fastidious about these things, but I always end up persevering because I ultimately believe that even if readers don't consciously pick up on them, it'll feed into their subconscious enjoyment and absorption of the story. The shattered bottle and poor Suguru's forehead paint a picture of the kind of night he's had, even if people don't make the direct connection to Pompompurin in chapter 13.
(Speaking of, "Would he toss Suguru in favour of a new model too?" I think Satoru answered that question a thousand times over this chapter.)
I think the re-read value of Over the Threshold gets higher with every chapter, and I hope those few people who go back to read the whole thing in one sitting when they're done will see things they never noticed before. However, I'll still never know whether anyone notices most of these little callbacks to foreshadowing in earlier chapters and the references to canon that I agonise over. They're minor ornaments to the rich tapestry of the text; they're not supposed to stand out, but I trust that they're doing their job.
All that in mind, I cannot even begin to describe the joy I feel when someone not only notices them, but points them out to me! It's a throw my arms up in a cheer and run around the house moment! God, it means so much that you pay such close attention to something that I am well aware no one will ever care about as much as me. It means all my wanky artist moments were worth it!
Your comments are always rewarding in this way, and this one was no different. The airplane reference?! I cannot believe you 😭 I think my fics are probably extra enjoyable to people like you who recall moments from canon so readily. I'm really happy you felt the car scene evoked Yaga on the stairs with Satoru, and that you loved his dynamic with Ijichi. Those two relationships were so important to this chapter and they're very special to me in canon, too. This chapter in particular shares a real dialogue with the source material, and I'm so glad it was felt. Delighted to have a fellow nerd reading, hehe!
As a prize for your keen eye and memory, here's another little detail from chapter 5 that I just happened to be thinking about earlier today:
‘Careful what you wish for, Suguru.’ Satoru was grinning at him now, excitement dancing across every inch of his lovely face. ‘I’ve got a mean right hook.’ Despite the manicured hands and the unbroken nose and the delicate jewellery affixed to his ear, Suguru guessed that anyone who underestimated Satoru in a fight would probably pay for it dearly.
I published that all the way back in December 2023 after writing it with that moment from chapter 16 in mind. Even I'm impressed by my patience and restraint at this point.
Thank you so much for loving my story and handling it with such care, @massivelyanerd. So grateful to count you as a reader ♥
Wip game questions: I’m seated and ready to listen about the glomegaverse 👀 + beekeeper au??
Since we already covered that awful(ly sexy) beekeeper Geto, let's talk about the glomegaverse. Tagging @damn-that-shit-was-dope and @kassandraws since you were also curious about this one ♥ Yap fest incoming, but you can skip straight to the bottom for a snippet!
Obligatory "I'm not usually into omegaverse" disclaimer before I tell you all about the omegaverse I'm into lmao. The truth is, I'm just not really into any tropes which rely on a "biological (or otherwise beyond conscious control) imperative to fuck". That's partly why I've always said if I ever wrote any omegaverse for SatoSugu, it'd be alpha/alpha.
(The other reason is that it just seems like the most natural fit for their characters based on my limited knowledge about the scope of omegaverse beyond stereotypical depictions. Also because pregnancy has zero appeal to me as a concept.)
Even then, it isn't something that compels me very much in isolation. I do have an alpha/alpha wip, but it was basically a challenge set by bear ("please I'll pay you for it") and I ended up picking a very physical contact sports setting requiring mandatory suppressants for alphas to create additional stakes. However, that isn't the glomegaverse...
Sigh. If the alpha/alpha is for bear, then the alpha/omega is for Lulu.
I know, I really never thought I'd write an alpha/omega story, but here we are. It all started when I saw this artwork in February 2025. Now, bearing in mind everything I just said, hear me out. I haven't figured out all the finer details yet, but we're about to take a wild left turn.
The inspiration for this AU is clearly Mulan in part, but also Dune and Warhammer 40k (which is really just Dune in a slightly different font) and even a tiny bit of Edge of Tomorrow. Like Dune and 40k, it's set in a far off future where humans have colonised the stars, thousands of years after a war during which computers nearly wiped out the species. It was a war brought about by complacency and over-reliance on technology (sounds worryingly familiar, doesn't it?), and the consequent blurring of the lines between human and machine.
All this to say: "secondary gender" in the glomegaverse is more like... A programme uploaded to human DNA? 🤪
It's a weapons programme. Alphas are essentially bioengineered super soldiers, but the original programme was developed by the computers before they revolted against their human overlords. It disappeared along with them at the end of the war, and the "alphas" of today are the result of humanity's pitiful attempts at recreating the great warriors of the long lost past. They are still formidable, but nothing compared to the legendary fighters of old (think Space Marines vs Primarchs, if you're familiar with 40k. I also have a 40k AU *sobs*) — that is, until Gojo Satoru is born.
Gojo is the result of a 10,000 year old "failsafe" that was set into motion long before humans even realised computers were a threat. It's the equivalent of the Bene Gesserit's millennia long breeding programme to "prepare the way" for the one who can see and enforce the Golden Path in Dune.
Of course, no one knows that Gojo is the "failsafe", including Gojo himself. He's just this freak of nature who apparently can't be killed and who they greatly fear, naturally. Therefore, they also don't know that this "failsafe" is actually comprised of two corresponding parts, the second of which is Geto. They are two halves of a "virus" of sorts. Should they come together (you know, "come" together... data transfer... plugs and ports... male and female connectors...?!), their unique genetic codes interacting will bring about...
I won't say anymore because I've already spoiled the big plot secret and the rest is a bit of a mess. Instead, we cut to poor @14th-lulullaby (on the right) listening to me explaining my grand plans for this fic:
When I said, "Romi's new art might be the thing that gets me to write alpha/omega", she was just excited to see nesting Suguru written by AO3 user greaterglow, but she should have known better.
This is the glomegaverse.
TL;DR I got around my aversion to "biological imperative to fuck" by turning it into bleak determinism instead. Here's a snippet inspired by the artwork that got this entire show on the road!
It was only then that Suguru caught the scent on the air. At once, his autonomic nervous system roared into life — and Suguru started to panic. Trying to will his pulse back under control, he swallowed down the saliva flooding his tongue and tried breathing through his mouth, horrified to discover he could taste the scent on the air, too. That was new. Was it because he hadn’t caught so much as a whiff of an alpha in weeks? Was the exaggerated reaction racking his body because he wasn’t used to it? It would certainly explain the sudden shift he sensed in the recruits all around him, their discipline slipping as the scent drew ever nearer. Surrounded by alphas whose pheromones were forcibly kept under lock and key, had Suguru become complacent? Or was it because this Alpha smelled different? Of course, Suguru had heard the legends of old. He had heard the stories about a scent like siren song. A scent with the power to inspire faith in their glorious leader and rally their troops to victory. Suguru had always believed it was just military propaganda. A myth to motivate desperate people into selling their sons to the Imperium’s brutal bioengineering programme. One from which they would return changed, their physiology altered beyond repair — if they were fortunate enough to return at all. Now, for the first time in his life, Suguru started to wonder if there wasn’t an element of truth to those stories. Because when he gave in to the instinct screaming for him to breathe deep, heaving lungfuls of a scent like snow melting into the forest floor — the utterly alien aroma of winter melting into spring and the promise of warmth to follow — Suguru certainly felt inspired to devotion. But not for the God Emperor. Suguru had heard the stories about General Gojō Satoru, too. He had heard whispers of white hair and scar ravaged skin. He had heard tales of a skilled warrior whittled into the deadliest of weapons under the watchful eye of the Imperium — of an experienced soldier hardened by battle. What he hadn’t expected after hearing the rumours passed around in the mess hall was for the general to be so young. There was no doubt about it. The man inspecting his forces with winter steel eyes, cold and hard and lethal, was the Alpha the scent belonged to. With a racing heart, Suguru observed the general prowling the ranks from the corner of his eye, his attention helplessly drawn to broad shoulders, broad chest, broad everything. His body was bare save for the hakama slung loosely around his hips, all of his scent glands breathing freely — which was how Suguru realised this wasn’t so much an inspection as it was intimidation tactics. As he passed by, the alphas cringed and cowered away from him, forced into submission by his overwhelming pheromones. Suguru was shaking in his boots too, albeit for slightly different reasons.
I love sci-fi. I don't think it shows in the stories I choose to write for this fandom, but it's definitely my favourite genre. I have a very old idea for an original work which is similarly complex sci-fi that also spans tens of thousands of years and interrogates the human relationship with knowledge. If I get round to finishing this wip, I'll consider it a practice run, I suppose!
