not a prompt, but more on do you think Maizulee is a fun pairing? Or how about whatevs one calls Katara x Azula x Mai?

I think Maizulee has a very interesting dynamic that I think is fun in fanfiction and tbh I love to see it, but in canon I think it would be extremely codependent bc think about it.

These are 3 girls who

-were raised in strict households

-had VERY limited contact with those outside family

-have been each others only friends for their entire lives

-that means they each had a front seat to all of each others trauma

-had a forcible dynamic shift once Zuko was banished (I.e. treading the line of what is okay to bring up in front of azula)

-and then wind up in life threatening situations together as they get older

It’s a powder keg just waiting to explode and it WILL the second someone else tries to insert themselves anywhere (obviously excluding Zuko bc he was part of the fabric before)

NOW I love me some Kazula I can’t lie. Two insane(ly) hotheaded women with family trauma and possessiveness as a main character trait? Again, powder keg but I LOVE it both for the literal and metaphorical symbolism of Fire and Water.

Throwing Mai in to that mix I think would weirdly level them out bc she’s so nonchalant about everything. She would deadpan lay out the facts of the most recent argument and Kat/Azula would be so PISSED that they couldn’t argue but ultimately admit to themselves (and only to themselves) that she is right

Can you share how you would have made Jet's death actually matter?

The Gaang should react to his death beyond 1 episode. Aang and Sokka being so happy next episode was sweet if we pretend Jet didn't just die minutes ago. Maybe have them be much more serious. Consider that Katara giving Zuko a chance so quickly is because she didn't trust Jet and feels guilty (even though she shouldn't).

Aang and the others could be afraid of Long Feng because he killed Jet and kidnapped Appa and Aang should be afraid of losing him again permanently. Let deaths for all of them be a little more possible, so that when Aang is actually dying, they are ALL panicking.

Especially Toph. I love that the show let her be afraid of swimming and not be tough in all situations. I would really love her to be confronted with the reality of war, and having someone she doesn't even know die and lie about it to comfort Katara?

It's not even a stretch since she sounded sad in the show.

The Freedom Fighters could join them and there could be a lot of heated arguments between them and Katara and Sokka (and Toph would just be tired and confused because no one is in the mood to fill her in and maybe The Duke would sadly tell her stories about Jet).

The Freedom Fighters wouldn't back down about flooding Gaipan, which would infuriate Sokka and Katara which would then lead to exploration of what they had to go through in war and how different it was from Katara and Sokka.

The helplessness of being in war and watching your home be destroyed or changed and being unable to flee or stop it was kind of...not there? I mean it definitely was for Katara and Sokka and even in the North Pole, but we don't really get the aftermath of it both times. Aang had it too, but he didn't go through it, and in all scenarios, it ended or had already been done.

Connect Jet's role as a leader in an impossible situation now with Katara and Sokka, Katara who has to keep Aang alive, and Sokka, who feels like he needs to come up with a plan to salvage losing the war.

At the very least, his death should impact some part of the plot in some way, be it Katara and her complicated feelings, Sokka and his opinion on Gaipan, Aang and his role as the avatar, or Toph and the reality of war.

Or Jet himself, and what he had to endure in war.

Hate to bother you but I adore your Avatar content and wanted to ask do you take asks with prompts? Like how the amazing muffinlance does?

Hakoda runs across poachers near the Southern Water Tribe and they drop a bag when they are chased off that has something squirming in it and when he opens it there is a baby dragon inside.

Your not a bother at all I love asks I just don't always get the time or motivation to answer them in a timely manner.

Now for this.... this implies Hakoda has enough forethought and brains not to stick his hand immediately in the bag without thinking to help sooth and calm to frantic creature and pull it out to free it.

He yelps yanking his hand back out with a little fire noodle chomping on his hand his wiggly little body coiled around Hakoda’s arm trying to kill his hand. It takes both his free hand and Bato’s own two to uncoil the baby dragon from around his arm and pry his chompers off his hand. That's when they realize this is a baby baby like a toddler at the most. And then they panic because if this is a baby where is mama?

If Avatar Studios comes around and retcons some of the things we've learned over the past few years, and if the comics eventually get decanonized, is there any moment/scene/new discovery you'd be sad to lose?

I think Bryke did say that the comics are part of canon, but they might retcon or clarify things that didn’t make sense or what not. For me, I think this is a good thing from both a fan service and financial perspective.

I think one thing that I will be sad to lose is if they take away Kiyi and Noren. As much as it seems that this fandom doesn’t like that Kiyi is like a “replacement sister”, I think it is a positive thing. For one, it shows the type of life that Azula and Zuko should have had, had Ozai not been the way he was. Additionally, it gives Zuko a second chance to be the brother he never got to be and a breath of fresh air from family drama. Third, it also displays to Zuko (and eventually Mai), what a healthy family can be like, especially since they end up having a daughter :)

When it comes to Noren, it’s pretty much the same thing: Ursa deserves a happy ending and a loving relationship. It’s pretty much implied that her marriage to Ozai was not out of love and she was not happy. I wouldn’t be surprised if she was abused by Ozai behind closed doors. So, by having Noren in the lore, it gives Ursa that healing gauge.

Now, that doesn’t mean that I want her to go to the Mother of Faces and wipe her memory of her children (although I think that was more of a trauma response related to Ozai but that’s not the point), but perhaps she went back to Hira’a and found Noren but didn’t change her face.

But you are right, Avatar Studios will rock our worlds but I have a lot of faith in them ❤️

I know you didn’t ask this part, but one thing I hope the studio doesn’t make canon is making Azula a villain. She deserves healing and her own redemption arc, even if she’s more of an antihero that becomes close with Zuko and the family ❤️

Did you read Suki alone? I think Azula is Suki's foil.

I'm not a fan of the ATLA comics, sorry :( I think that they really butchered Azula by not utilizing her better & I'm not a fan of the direction they took Zuko as Firelord. I think that the comics tended to have the gaang OOC & I just don't really count them as canon, so I'm not the best person to come to to discuss the comics :(

From pop culture Wiki: 'In any narrative, a foil is a character who contrasts with another character; typically, a character who contrasts with the protagonist, in order to better highlight or differentiate certain qualities of the protagonist. A foil to the protagonist may also be the antagonist of the plot.'

The thing is - Azula & Katara pretty especially narratively contrast each other. Prodigious daughters to distant fathers & absent mothers with less powerful older brothers. Except Azula was given the training to become a true prodigy bender but not the love & nurture to become a caring & compassionate person & Katara had to struggle & fight to get proper training but she had a good relationship with her brother & when she reunited with her father it was positive. Also despite her mother's death, it seems they had a good relationship when Kya was alive. In all of these ways Azula & Katara contrast each other narratively in pretty specific ways.

It's not that I don't think Azula & Suki can have an interesting dynamic or that I don't think there are reasons they might contrast each other. Absolutely there's potential there. Azula as a cold imperialist who needs to grow & change & Suki as a warrior who grew up in a communal setting - she's powerful but she's also kind & she never had the privilege that Azula did. There's an enemies to lovers - or at least enemies to friends or allies - story in there. I just don't think that they are narrative foils per se.
