it really is just so beautiful and i love aang a lot and his story but for me, korra's story resonates so much more.

Omg yes yes yes yes. I love tlok to the death. I started watching atla after tlok, it's actually not that interesting
I started off this whole watch with the tlok pilot, because I figured it was probably a lot more up in my alley, and then went back to atla because I really liked the world building and wanted to know more about those characters’ backstory... and surprised myself with really loving it tbh.
It was kind of like jumping between an earlier and a later Harry Potter book - the protagonist’s age informed the story being told, but on the other hand, atla also often had a surprising amount of maturity to it, despite being more of the ‘kids’ show’.
And I appreciate that the two shows have very different approaches and structure, and it made it really hard for me at the beginning of tlok to compare the two, because... I had such different reasons for liking them? For instance, because atla had a fairly simple premise and longer seasons, it had more of an episodic structure, and those episodes usually focused on one of the core characters - which really paid off at the end because there were a lot of character growth for each of them. It also achieved the rare feat of making me care about the male protagonist as much as the female lead - and I loved Katara a LOT.
On the other hand, tlok has shorter seasons with different stories being told for each - which in turn meant that they were able to examine a number of themes through them. And while it didn’t have a lot of episodes centered around one single character the way atla did, the characters still managed to have their arcs. In turn however, Team Avatar didn’t play such a huge part in all of it - instead there’s a bigger cast of characters receiving attention, AND ultimately the story is driven by Korra much more than anyone.
And THAT’S one of the things that ultimately pushed tlok ahead for me as well, because Korra’s story is just SO GOOD. I love how the show lets her grow and mature without demeaning or punishing her for having such an assertive and confrontational nature, and that makes her development so much more rewarding.
And it’s sort of an unfair comparison to atla once again, because Aang is literally a KID. (Which is why it was so cool that the show still spent an entire episode examining Aang’s reasons for not wanting to kill Ozai, even pointing out that he’s holding onto his own personal value system over his Avatar duties.) But when Korra confronts Zaheer again in s4 or risks her life saving Kuvira and then EMPATHIZES with her - those scenes have so much weight to them. And I’m still a MESS.
I JUST LOVE HER AND HER JOURNEY SO MUCH.
