The Hypocrisy of Avatar Shippers: Why Are We Trying to Ruin the Best Found Family in Animation?

Gather around, gaybies and nerds, because I am about to standard-deviate from my usual peaceful existence to drag a very specific, very exhausting corner of the Avatar fandom. Put down your cactus juice and listen up, because the math is simply not mathing.

Do you wanna know something that's funny? Not "Ha ha, funny", but "Oh my God, that's so stupid and ultimately pointless" funny.

It's the fact that viewers constantly complain about the so-called "love triangle" between Korra, Mako, and Asami from The Legend of Korra. We get it. We all lived through 2012. It was messy, it made Mako look like a serial commitment-phobe, and it took away precious screen time from Asami being a brilliant CEO and Korra being a literal Avatar to a certain extent. The fandom collectively agreed that love triangles are a cheap, lazy trope that ruins character dynamics.

Yet... those exact same viewers want to turn around and create unnecessary, toxic love triangles between Team Avatar from Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Explain the logic to me, because my brain is short-circuiting.

We have people foaming at the mouth pitting Zuko and Aang against each other for Katara's heart. We have people dragging Toph and Suki into the ring to wrestle for Sokka's affection.

Like, wow. Just... wow. The cognitive dissonance is staggering.

The absolute pinnacle of Avatar: The Last Airbender isn't the magic elemental system. It’s not even Zuko’s redemption arc (though, chefs kiss). It is the found family. It’s a group of traumatized kids from entirely different walks of life coming together, sleeping in dirt, sharing tea, and saving the world while becoming a fiercely loyal unit. They are brothers, sisters, and soulmates in the deepest, most platonic sense of the word.

Why in the name of Raava are they attempting to ruin an amazing and beautiful found family friendship for their stupid and pointless shipping wars?!

You can ship whatever your little heart desires—fanon is free real estate. But the minute you start projecting toxic, competitive love triangles onto a group of kids whose entire bond is built on mutual survival and unconditional platonic love? You missed the entire point of the show. Go touch some spirit oasis grass.

Yesterday I came across a post in which it was discussed who was really born lucky, Azula or Zuko and one point was, that Zuko didn't have to give his best to earn anything, like Azula, because he had first born privilege and somehow it seems like people keep forgetting that none of both were born heir to the throne (me included).

It's actually Lu Ten! Iroh's son. He was the first and only child to the man who was supposed to become the next firelord.

And that's so funny to me, because Ozai already played his two kids before there was even anything to fight over other than getting his love (which he never gave to any of both to be honest).

The fact that atla not only depicted a girl sweating, but quite literally made that sweat a POWER? 

Like guys I am a sweaty person (it’s in my genes) and growing up I always felt so self-conscious about it and embarrassed. I carried all this shame about it. It made me not want to go to school dances, it made me anxious in P.E. class, the list goes on -sometimes I still struggle with it. I never saw sweaty girls represented in tv shows or movies and to this day find it to be rare -I’m talking non-sexy sweat, I’m talking “gross” armpit sweat like Katara! 

In The Headband Katara dances with Aang and afterwards you can see her sweating. 

In The Runaway she literally uses her sweat to break out of prison. 

It might not seem like much, but I wish so badly I’d had this show back then. Even if it’s a decade late I’m still so happy to see it! Sweat is badass and I want more representations like this in my life!
