Once upon a time, wise women were dangerous to those who wished to control the populace. The village witches (wise women) were once greatly respected — they were the doulas, the sages, and the medicine women of the local community. They were once respected and honored. But as history unfolded and organized religion became more prevalent, these women were persecuted because their intelligence and knowledge were seen as a threat to the church. Intelligent people do not go so willingly with authority. So they were persecuted. The midwives, women who picked herbs for home remedies, and even literate women were hunted down and killed because they were "witches". It's estimated over 60,000 women were executed in these witch hunts. Nowadays, the power of organized religion has thankfully waned. More and more people are getting back to their "witchy" roots and embracing a personal relationship with Spirit.
