Why It’s Okay To Take A Break (especially right now)

If you’re like me you probably have one or multiple social media accounts. You probably follow lots of actors, fellow theater majors, and theater related accounts. You probably are constantly bombarded with videos of people who you deem “successful” and look at yourself and think “Why can’t that be my life?” “Why are they so much better than me?” “I’m never going to be that good and be successful”. What harsh things to say to ourselves right? Not to mention the theater industry is currently on a hiatus. What do we do? How do we continue to make art and do what we love?

I’m currently in my final year of theater school which has been online since March (like many of you). Not only do I have to meet for my classes and voice lessons over Zoom, I’m currently in a Zoom production. Our school is doing every production online this semester (as they should, of course). I felt so pressured to send in audition videos for this as well as other online productions I’ve been seeing. I’m sure a lot of us feel like we have to do online shows because that’s all there is to do right now, right?

Here’s the thing - we don’t.

This is a hard, weird, frustrating time. It’s impossible to carry on like this is normal life. If you aren’t up to it - you don’t have to do it! It doesn’t mean you don’t like performing or that you don’t want to get better at what you do. I’ve been struggling with that a lot. Sometimes you just have to shift your focus onto something else. It’s important and it’s healthy. Getting frustrated with the way things are going does not mean you don’t love theater. We’re sort of being pressured into thinking we have to act like nothing is wrong and that this is normal. And it’s not! So let yourself take a step back. Focus on your classes, focus on yourself and your well being. This will not last forever and you are not falling behind. Take care and I hope this helps someone out there today.
