From Nicholas II's diary:

August 23rd. Tuesday. Today is a year that I came here. At 10 o'clock we went to the prayer service together, and after the report to the Bristol headquarters hotel for breakfast. It was good and simple! Accepted Boris's report. About 3 o''clock. we went up to the forest. Alix was watching Alexei's games, and my daughters and I moved to the right side of the Dnieper; again there was the usual fuss in the bushes. At 6 o'clock we went to the cinemat. I had lunch with Alix on the train and spent the evening with her.

“On 11 August Alexandra informed Nicholas that their daughters had spent all day posing for a new set of official photographs ‘for giving away to their committees’. As it turned out these would be the last official pictures ever taken of the four sisters - by photographer Alexander Funk. Released from their usual all-purpose plain skirts and blouses the girls dressed in their best satin tea dresses with embroidered panels of roses, wearing their pearl necklaces and gold bracelets. Anastasia not having passed the socially liberating age of sixteen still had her long hair loose, but her three older sisters all had theirs specially marcel-waved and dressed in chignons, most probably by Alexandra’s hairdresser Delacroix.”

On the reverse of the photograph is a letter from the Grand Duchess, handwritten in Russian:
