The heavy oak doors of your quarters haven't been opened in hours and your head felt like it was being crushed from the inside. The air in your lungs was too hot and the back of your eyes ached when you opened them. You lay tangled in the silk sheets of your canopy bed, beads of sweat forming on your body. It was a severe fever brought by the chill of the underground city. To any normal vampire of the city a sick human would mean defected product and you would be thrown out immediately.
The knob clicked as it opened, you tried getting up but your muscles failed you. Your body let go of itself and you fell back on the bed. Your eyes are half closed, your dry and cracked lips let out a shallow whimper of pain. You don't think you've had a fever this bad ever in your life. "My, my, look at this." A melodious voice chimed from the doorway. Ferid walked into the room, his hair flawlessly tied back, he wasn't wearing his usual uniform, he had a white shirt with black formal pants on but his mocking smile was fixated on his face. He looked ravishing.
Carrying a bowl he sat down on the edge of your bed, "I leave you alone for one evening to attend a dreadfully dull council meeting and you decide to whither away in my absence?" he sighed dramatically. "Go away" you said, your voice hoarse and weak. You tried to glare at him the way you usually do but your eyes are too heavy and unfocused to do so. He placed the bowl on the night stand and putting his weight on one knee he reached out, "Let's see the damage" he murmured.
Before you could move his hand met your forehead, tears pricked your eyes from the shock coldness of his fingers. It felt as if a block of ice was being pressed down on your forehead. But it did feel good, you relaxed under his touch. He didn't remove his hand, it stayed splayed on your forehead cooling your nerves. "Goodness heavens" Ferid chuckled softly, "You're practically boiling sweetheart, if I put a tea cup on your forehead I'm sure it would stay warm all afternoon" his voice lacked the usual tone of sarcasm but you didn't care. "Go..away from me" you whimpered.
"Is that an order or a request? If it's an order I'm afraid I have to disobey and if it's a request, well..your skin is begging for my cooling touch" he lifted his hands away and you let out a weak noise of discomfort, "See? utterly contradictory" he walks out of the room, his boots making soft noises and he returns with a bowl of ice water and a clean cloth. He sits back down at the edge of the bed. He dipped the cloth into the water before he wrung it out,"Now hold still" he says before he places the cloth on your forehead. The relief made you open your eyes and with a blurry gaze you saw Ferid sitting on the edge of the bed looking at you."Why are you doing this? Call a servant or..." you took a break not being able to speak much,"let the fever finish" you said as you closed your eyes again. Ferid raised his eyebrows a smirk playing on his lips,"Call a servant? To look after my special guest? Those low borns do not have the honor of being graced by your presence. And besides, they'd probably try to drain out your blood to 'reduce the pain'. I prefer to handle my investments on my own"
"I am not an investment" you retorted as you turned your face away from him, the cloth on your head slipping a bit. His cold fingers fixed the cloth,"Fine. A hobby then. Honestly, you surface dwellers are so fragile. A little cold air and your immune system starts to throw a tantrum. Its a miracle your species survived long enough to build cities and bring destruction upon themselves" "We survived because we dont live in holes underground" you rasped before Ferid broke out into laughter.
Minutes blended into hours after that, the fever lulled you into deep sleep and you'd wake up every now and then to see Ferid leaning on the back canopy post on your bed as he sat on the bed, arms crossed while looking at you. You didn't pay attention to it and went back to sleep. He often changed the heated cloth with a new cold cloth. Sometimes pulling your blanket up to your chin.
Deep in the middle of the night your fever peaked and you felt heat waves pass through your veins. You weakly pushed off your blanket and lay sprawled on the bed. Your body in agony. "Easy little lamb, easy" Ferid came forward unbuttoning the top button of the gown you were wearing. "Let go, it burns Ferid" you rasped again, panting due to the intense heat, "I know" he whispered as he leaned in from the edge of the bed and pulled you up my your armpits and sat you down. He wrapped his arms around you and gave the upper portion of your body a hug. His cold body felt nice against the heat rushing through your veins. "Look at the little lamb, using a monster as an ice pack. Seriously, if the other progenitors caught me,my reputation would turn to dust" he said amused by you leaning on him. "But I do hope the coolness comforts your raging skin" "Shut up" you spat,"As you wish" he replied as he held you for a bit before resting your body back on the pillows.
You drifted off again and when you woke up the lights were on in your room and you suspect it was day time. Your fever had ceased a lot but there was still discomfort. Ferid had brought a chair to sit by your bedside and he was looking down while flipping through the pages of a book. "So the sleeping beauty returns. There's some tea and broth on your nightstand. Do bless me with the sight of you feeding yourself" he said, voice as smooth as velvet as he finally looked up, his smile the same as ever, his posture pristine. Although you kept a cold exterior, it might've cracked. His care had relieved you so much from your distress and agony and he hasn't done any harm to you yet. This doesn't mean you'll stop suspecting him of doing something harmful to you but you definitely trust him a bit more than before.
