The Prologue
The words from his letter were burned into my eyes, just like the tears that burned as they ran down my face. Bucky was gone. That’s all I could comprehend. Bucky was over and had decided it was time to move on. Move on from this life. From me.
My breath hitched in my throat as that realization dawned on me. My eyes slowly moved around our- correction- my apartment. I noticed the empty drawers that were once filled with his clothes not too long ago. I noticed the broken picture from our wedding day laying in the middle of the living room. My eyes then came to rest on the gold band that was placed beside the unpleasant letter.
The tears continued down my face as I stood up from the chair, his chair, right by the window. Sitting there for longer than I intended, my legs cracked as I stood. Numbly, I walked towards our bedroom. The bed was made, although I had never seen him make it a day in his life. My heart clenched as I began to wondered who was here with him.
It was her. He had said so. In his letter. She helped him pack. Of course she would go out of her to make it seem as if no one was here. That was her job, wasn’t it? To hide all of his heinous actions from the rest of the world.
With a deep breath, I turned away from the bed and towards the dresser. Looking down at my wrist, I took off the golden bracelet he had bought me along with the silver watch. Then, I looked down at my left hand. My wedding band and engagement ring stared tauntingly up at me. I rid the things that had yet to leave my finger for the last two and a half years.
The sobs broke free as I set the rings down. What felt like the last tether to him was gone. I knew I shouldn’t miss him. He was convinced the problems were all mine. He was sure that something wonderful between us had died. As if he had the right to decide for the both of us.
Slowly, I took the phone out of my pocket. I dialed his number, against my better judgement, but was met with his voicemail almost immediately. “Hey, it’s Bucky. Leave a message,” his voice almost broke me. But, I took a deep breath and waited for the beep.
“Give me a day, James. Bring back the lies and we can hang them on the wall. Maybe then I could see how you could be so certain we had no chance at all,” I took a shaky breath. “You can’t be gone. You can’t. You’re perfectly fine, and I’m here, still hurting. And I need-” the beep signalling the end of the message cut me off. The sobs racked my body as I wrapped my arms around myself, trying to hold what was left together.
Where was I supposed to turn? Bucky was my best friend, my husband. His friends were my friends. He didn’t realize he took everything from me when he left. I was covered with scars from him that I didn’t earn. He had dreams that he was building upon and secrets that he couldn’t confide. But, I was still there, hurting.
I curled on the bed in his spot that still smelled like him and thought. I thought about our last five years together. Perhaps there’s a lesson to be learned. But I knew in my heart that looking back wouldn’t change the fact that he’s gone and never coming back, nor would it speed up time to rid this horrid hole left in me. Because once the foundations cracked, nothing can fix it.

Chapter Seventeen of ‘Work in Progress’ is up.
It’s the day of the MacPherson Literary Awards. Bucky is nervous, still feeling a little fragile over the events of the previous chapter.
It’s still a little on the angsty side but nowhere near the levels of chapter sixteen.

Anyone who’d like to be tagged, by all means let me know!
Reblogs etc are always appreciated. Thank you to those who already do so.

Chapter Sixteen of ‘Work in Progress’ is now up.
The chapter begins with a flashback and Jess later discovers Bucky in a state of PTSD induced anxiety. Warnings for scenes of angst and suffering for the first half of the chapter.
Later on, Jess and Tony have a conversation and an understanding is reached between them.

Chapter Ten of ‘Work in Progress’ is now up.
You think Bucky would be on cloud nine after the events of the previous chapter, right? Think again.

Completely AU. You’ll recognise the characters but in a different walk of life. Ex soldier, Bucky Barnes, a reclusive best selling author. He has secrets that he refuses to share, even though they threaten to tear him apart. Jess Stark is his best friend and his secret heart’s desire. What will it take to get James Buchanan Barnes to open his soul?
Angst, super slow burn, best friends to lovers trope. Smut in a couple of later chapters. There may be errors. In fact there probably will be. Bucky x OFC.
Thoughts and reblogs would be greatly appreciated as it’s taken me a hell of a lot to pluck up the courage to share this.
