Summary: It’s 1999, and the biggest problem on Dean Smith’s plate is a bunch of annoying Y2K hysteria at Sandover… until a ghostly zombie arm reaches out of his computer screen trying to strangle him to death. He’s rescued by an odd guy named Castiel who claims to be his guardian angel.

Turns out, Castiel works with Sam Wesson—the ghost hunter who took care of Sandover’s haunting several years back. They tell Dean that there’s a monster haunting the World Wide Web, targeting survivors of previous paranormal attacks based on what they type into search engines. Dean’s at the top of its kill list thanks to his damning AskJeeves history.

Dean agrees to be bait for Sam and Castiel to draw out the “ghost in the machine,” and he and his guardian angel Cas get close—fast. And when Dean learns that Cas watches him a little more closely than all of his other charges, Dean invites him to do more than just watch.

Excerpt: 

Dean had to jab the power button a few times to get his Gateway to power on, which was unusual. Even weirder, the little indicator light just below the power button flashed purple—just for a moment—before adopting its usual steady green.

It was strange, but nothing to get worked up over. The computer seemed to be working fine now, so Dean let it go with a shrug. Just one of those weird computer things, like when they would get sluggish and freeze up and you could move the error box around on the screen and it would leave a trail of error boxes everywhere you led it with your mouse.

His phone rings. His secretary, letting him know his two o’clock had arrived. “Send him in,” Dean says. He straightens his tie, makes sure his suspenders aren’t twisted on his pin striped shirt. Licks one finger to slide it across the hairs at his hairline that always tried to stick up in silent protest against his pomade.

Time to dazzle.

The door opens, and the journo steps through. And...

Midwestern Steel and Machining Review did not send their best.

Guy’s wearing a trench coat at least two full sizes too big for his body and hanging limply at his sides. His inky black hair is poking up in all directions like he just took a roll in the hay, and his eyes—crystal blue—are frantic and darting about. When he makes eye contact with Dean, he honest-to-god blushes, a bloom of soft pink erupting high on his cheeks. If he’d fix his hair and take that trench coat off, he’d be a pretty handsome guy, Dean thinks.

Dean’s not used to bikers rolling through town looking hot. He loves ‘em, don’t get him wrong, and he’s hooked up with the occasional smoke show on a chopper. (Benny springs immediately to mind—always down for a ride, pardon the double entendre, when he’s passing through town.) But on the whole, the biker set that events like this attracted tended to be on the crustier, more grizzled, rode-hard-and-put-away-wet side.

He doesn’t notice the guy’s eyes until they’re locked with his own—and they’re a bright, near electric blue that’s… familiar, almost?

But he can’t place them.

“Winchester, I’m guessing?” the man says, eyes flicking up briefly to the Winchester Auto & Motorcycle sign. His voice is low and rumbly like the dirt road that cuts up the mountain to Bobby’s place. Dean gives one short nod.

“You know, I went to high school with a Winchester. Not a common name.”

The man’s eyes flick back to him, and he studies Dean’s face for a long few seconds. The intense blue of the guy’s eyes on him makes Dean feel a bit like an exposed nerve. He watches the man’s head tilt slowly to the side, questioning.

“Dean?” he asks, finally. “Is that you?”

Recognition hits Dean like a freight train.

Bright blue eyes.

Dark hair, almost black.

Chapped lips.

Slim fingers with a cigarette between them—only, back then, it would have been a joint.

“Cas?”

The man smiles wide. Handsome. “In the flesh.”

Castiel Shurley has aged… well. He is not a skinny, perpetually-stoned weirdo anymore, that’s for damn sure.

His name is Michael, and he is an ancient being cursed to become only what is revealed to him. Whispered rumors among the nightmen reveal to him that he is a great, stinking, nightmarish, horrendous beast, but their nightly candlelight readings of Jane Austen novels also reveal within him an all-consuming desire to find love and be married. When Adam accidentally reveals his reflection to the creature, Michael finds in Adam a new physical form to adopt and an object of his most ardent affections.

(An irreverent Midam romp through Victorian London, featuring an Adam who is completely done with his half-brothers’ bullshit and a Michael who speaks almost exclusively in 'Pride & Prejudice' quotes.)

Samuel,

Truly, the degree to which the three of you continue to underestimate me is magnificent. You only hear rumours of shapeshifters in London due to the expediency with which they are being dispatched, by my hand. In the past fortnight alone, I’ve killed three.

I find a ladies’ hand mirror to be the most helpful of tools for such an operation. If you hold it at the correct angle, the shifter’s eyes will glint just so even in the brightest or darkest of places, revealing their true identity. Unfortunately, I do not believe I have yet found the one responsible for my mother’s death. I am content simply to eliminate as many of them as possible while I live.

My studies prove a time-wasting distraction from this mission, but I will continue them regardless for the material comforts the scholarship provides. I am pleased to hear that someone finds this endeavor to be at all otherwise worthwhile, though. If only we were in a position to trade places, and you could come rot away in your studies and I could spend my days entirely on the hunt.

Since Dean and Castiel cannot be deigned to write, I too cannot be deigned to offer them a greeting. I am preparing to approach another shapeshifter tonight, one who supposedly resides underground in the new sewer tunnels at Crossness. I will write again once I have ended him. If my next letter is not within your receipt in a matter of days, consider me dead and your lack of faith in my abilities as a hunter to be entirely rooted in truth.

Adam moves the mirror sharply away from the horrific eyes, catches the briefest glimpse of his own petrified face reflected in the glass, and drops it right out of his sweaty, shaking palm. It’s deafening, the sound of the mirror hitting the floor and shattering into pieces.

Marv stops reading.

The beast stops inching towards him.

Adam’s life hangs in the silence.

He runs, as hard and fast as his legs will carry him. The sounds of his footfalls against wet brick are loud cracks in the quiet, like a blacksmith striking a hot iron.

A low, roaring gurgle comes from behind him as his feet pound against the ground. It’s drawing closer still—the beast is pursuing him again.

It takes Adam a moment to realize the gurgling noises are the beast’s voice. It’s speaking.

“Run mad as often as you choose, but do not faint!” it roars, garbled, and Adam can feel its hot breath, its open maw right behind him. The stench is unbearable, like concentrated death—like the municipal cemeteries all over London spat all of their dead out of the ground right at the apex of summer.

Then Adam is finally back at the hub, somehow, scrambling to the ladder and up it.

He looks back down, once, and he’s horrified by what he sees looking back at him.
