Is it possible for someone to have been diagnosed with dyslexia or bipolar, but to actually be autistic/aspergic, but have fallen through the cracks because he doesn't present as a stereotypical male Aspie/autistic? My boyfriend is very social and loves to make friends, but struggles with phone and text contact with everyone, doesn't like his back touched, and stims a lot - he loves to cuddle things and touch soft or interesting textures when stressed. 🐻👧
(🐻👧 again) He also has had problems with self harm, but doesn't do it any longer (he got help and tries to work on his issues). He can't handle radio and speech at the same time, and doesn't always pick up on some "customary" things for romance or etiquette, but is very considerate; for example, I avoid certain foods for religious reasons, and he actively helps me screen foods at restaurants and home for the offending ingredients. He's also gotten me away from a sensory overload situation.
Yes, that’s absolutely possible. Both of these are common misdiagnoses. (It is also possible to be autistic and dyslexic and / or bipolar at the same time though.)
Many of the characteristics you describe could be autistic traits.
