Automatic writing by Mr. Arnold. [Cambridge] 31 October 1889. b MS Am 1092.9 (4528)
Sometimes, communications were conveyed orally; sometimes, messages were conveyed as automatic writing, where a spirit controlled the subject’s hand and arm.

The Red Book is an extended example of what is described in the Jungian literature as active imagination. According to Jung, active imagination requires a state of reverie, half-way between sleep and waking. Active imagination involves the exploration and elaboration of dream images while awake. In active imagination the conscious mind encourages unconscious fantasies to emerge and then actively engages them. ―Greg Mahr and Christopher L. Drake, from Singing in tune: Carl Jung and The Red Book
It’s an inward passage, a ritual emptied of ornament, enacted in solitude. A subtle loosening of the inner ligatures. The mind, which ordinarily arranges itself into coherence for the sake of survival, begins to dim its surface authority. And then—almost imperceptibly at first—another register emerges: not thought as I recognize it, but something more archaic, more oracular. The voice does not describe me, it speaks through me. I cross that threshold deliberately, as one might step into dark water whose depths remain latent.
The ego does not vanish; it steps aside, becomes porous, allows ingress. One does not “make” the images. One receives them. It is closer to entering into relation with what insists on appearing. It becomes a witness to incursions—images that arrive with the density of symbols, phrases that feel excavated rather than composed. I do not summon them, I allow them.
There is, in this, a paradox I have come to trust: that the psyche, when permitted, is generative beyond anything the conscious mind could architect, yet it requires a witness—someone to remain, to attend, to hold the tension without collapsing it into interpretation too soon.
When I write in this state (automatic writing), I am not composing. I am following.
The first thing is to be alone, and as free as possible from being disturbed. Then one must sit down and concentrate on seeing and hearing whatever comes up from the unconscious. When this is accomplished, and often it is far from easy, the image must be prevented from sinking back again into the unconscious, by drawing, painting or writing down whatever has been seen or heard. Sometimes it is possible to express it best by movement or dancing. Some people cannot get into touch with the unconscious directly. An indirect approach that often reveals the unconscious particularly well, is to write stories, apparently about other people. Such stories invariably reveal the parts of the storyteller’s own psyche of which he or she is completely unconscious. ―Barbara Hannah, from Encounters with the Soul: Active Imagination As Developed by C.G. Jung
A phrase arrives unannounced. An image presses forward with the strange authority of something that does not ask permission. I do not correct it, nor do I refine. I let the syntax distort, the logic fracture, the voice proliferate. It is, in the truest sense, a stream—not of consciousness, but of that which precedes it and exceeds it.
This flow, this yielding, is only the first movement. To remain there, intoxicated by the immediacy of it, is to mistake revelation for integration. What emerges must be returned to, circled, read as one would read a text written in a partially forgotten language. I approach it not as its originator, but as its interlocutor. I ask: What constellation does this image belong to? What affect clings to this phrase? Where have I seen this symbol before—in dream, in myth, in the quiet repetitions of my own life?
It becomes, then, less a diary and more an archive of correspondences.
The unconscious is not just evil by nature, it is also the source of the highest good: not only dark but also light, not only bestial, semihuman, and demonic but superhuman, spiritual, and, in the classical sense of the word, “divine.” ―C.G. Jung, from The Practice of Psychotherapy
Which is to say: what emerges is neither random nor purely chaotic, but structured, meaningful, often more honest than the self we present. Even the early automatists—André Breton among them—recognized something in this current: “Psychic automatism in its pure state, by which one proposes to express―verbally, by means of the written word, or in any other manner―the actual functioning of thought. Dictated by the thought, in the absence of any control exercised by reason, exempt from any aesthetic or moral concern.” However, I find that what is required is not the absence of control, but a more exacting kind of attention. A chosen descent into the psychic substratum where image forgoes explanation, where symbol is structural, where language begins to echo its primordial, incantatory breath. The page becomes both veil and passage, a site where the inward crosses into articulation.
To write in this register is to inhabit a cosmology that feels inward yet not entirely self-derived. The psyche reveals itself as inhabited, articulate in symbol and repetition, leaving behind a lattice of signs that begin, slowly, to arrange themselves. They do not clarify—they recognize. And there is something both beautiful and disquieting in this: that the unconscious has never been silent, only unreceived.
And over time, through this quiet, recursive dialogue, the fragments begin to cohere. Not into certainty, but into recognition—the slow, unsettling realization that what moves beneath has always been shaping the surface. Or, as Jung writes with unsettling clarity, "The psychological rule says that when an inner situation is not made conscious, it happens outside, as fate. That is to say, when the individual remains undivided and does not become conscious of his inner opposite, the world must perforce act out the conflict and be torn into opposing halves."
Intuitive Free Writing
What is it?
Free Writing is a method used often in writing in which someone writes, without worrying about spelling, grammar, etc., for a certain period of time without stopping. I see this as a form of meditation because the point is to not make any judgments about what is being written and to instead just let things flow. Intuitive Free Writing is then just using this method to access your intuitive abilities, and a potential form of divination.
(This is not automatic writing, in which a spirit physically interacts with you so that you don't have any awareness of what is being written. You are not channeling a spirit, you are connecting with your intuition)
How to do it?
Here is how you can do it:
Supplies: Grab a notebook and pencil or whatever you are going to write with. Include a timer if you want to set a time limit. You can also type it, or record yourself speaking if you prefer that.
Environment: Set up in a space where you will not be interrupted and have nothing distracting you, as if you were going to meditate. It can be quiet or with instrumental music (avoid music with lyrics at first, but you can experiment with this later), or incense.
Evoking: This is an optional step for if you want to use it to communicate with spirits. Handle this how you normally would, with protections, offerings, and an invitation to the spirit you want to talk to. You can use a divination tool to confirm their presence if you wish.
Centering: Ground and center yourself in the present. You want to get into a receptive, lightly focused state or as close to it as you are able to manage.
Initial Writing: I usually start writing something intentional to get the ball rolling such as "I am listening" or a greeting to spirits or just rambling whatever comes to mind consciously. The point is to get started, get in the flow.
Keep Writing: Write everything that comes into your mind or awareness. Don't try to control or make judgements about what is being written, i.e. don't worry about spelling or grammar or interrupted thoughts. Just write down whatever you receive, whatever thoughts come up. If you smell chocolate, write that. If you feel dumb or uncertain, write that. If your mind is blank, write that. Write what you think, what you see, what you feel.
Stop: When the timer goes off, or when it feels right, stop. Usually, I will ease out of things by consciously writing the last bit, this is often a thank you to whomever I have contacted, but can also be first reaction to the experience.
Read: Read over what you've written. You could highlight areas of interest: this could be sensory observations, thoughts that seemed to come out of nowhere, shadow work areas, emotions, etc.
Recopy: Optional extra: if you want to clean up what was written, or even copy it into a separate, tidier notebook, then feel free to do so! I have a separate cleaned up notebook, and I also sometimes take a moment to clear up what a word I wrote is because I have messy handwriting.
Reflect: Write a note on your experience. How did you feel? Did you sense any energies? Did any thoughts or words seem to come from outside of you? Did you notice, in the moment, that something felt different when you wrote a certain word or phrase? Perhaps next time you could mark these moments as you write with an asterisk*
Grounding: You can also take a moment to ground yourself, or any kind of transition back into daily life.
Additional Notes
It may take time to get comfortable doing this and, if using it as a communication method, to develop discernment. Because of the nature of this method, it is very easy to mix up your conscious and subconscious thoughts with messages from spirit. Follow up important messages with other forms of divination or by getting readings from others. Be a skeptic - not during the writing process though, only after.
Let's Channel Spirits!
Spirit channeling is the practice of communicating with non-physical entities, such as ancestors, deities, guides, or spirits of the dead. It has existed across cultures and traditions for thousands of years, with shamans, oracles, and mystics acting as intermediaries between the human and spirit realms. In ancient Greece, the Oracle of Delphi channeled messages from Apollo, while in indigenous traditions, shamans entered trance states to receive guidance from spirits. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, spiritualism popularized spirit communication through séances and automatic writing, a practice that continues today in various forms of witchcraft, mediumship, and divination.
The rewards of spirit channeling can be profound. Many practitioners use it to receive wisdom, gain insight into personal or collective issues, and deepen their spiritual path. Ancestor work, for example, allows witches to access generational knowledge and healing, while channeling deities or spirit guides can offer profound revelations. It is also a tool for magical work, as spirits can aid in spellcasting, protection, or uncovering hidden truths. For those seeking closure, channeling deceased loved ones can bring comfort and resolution.
However, there are risks involved. Not all spirits are benevolent, and some may deceive, manipulate, or drain a channeler’s energy. Without proper protections, practitioners may attract unwanted entities or even experience psychic burnout. Psychological risks also exist, as differentiating between genuine messages and personal imagination can be challenging. Ethical concerns arise when people rely too heavily on spirit communication for decision-making, neglecting their own intuition and logic. This is why grounding, shielding, and discernment are essential.
In modern practice, spirit channeling takes many forms, from traditional trance mediumship to intuitive divination using tarot, pendulums, or scrying. Some witches use meditation and altered states of consciousness to connect with spirits, while others engage in automatic writing or guided visualization. With the rise of technology, spirit communication has even extended to digital methods, such as EVP (electronic voice phenomena), ghost communication devices and apps, and AI-assisted divination. Despite skepticism, the practice remains a vital part of many spiritual traditions, evolving alongside new understandings of consciousness and the unseen world. Whether approached with reverence or caution, spirit channeling continues to offer a bridge between realms, guiding those who seek its wisdom.
Forms of Spirit Channeling
Spirit channeling can take many forms, depending on the tradition, method, and depth of connection. Below is a list of different types of spirit channeling, ranging from light communication to deep trance states.
Mental Channeling:
• The spirit communicates through thoughts, impressions, or intuitive messages.
• The channeler remains fully conscious and translates the information received.
• Often used in mediumship, divination, and psychic readings.
Trance Channeling:
• The channeler enters an altered state where the spirit speaks or acts through them.
• Can be light (partial awareness) or deep (full surrender of control).
• Used by shamans, spiritualist mediums, and oracles.
Automatic Writing (Psychography):
• The spirit guides the channeler’s hand to write messages.
• The channeler may or may not be conscious of what is being written.
• Used for receiving detailed messages or insights from spirits.
Séances & Spirit Board Communication:
• Group or solo practice involving talking boards (Ouija), pendulums, or other tools.
• Spirits respond through movement, knocking, or written messages.
• Requires strong protection, as it can attract various types of entities.
Mediumship:
• A person serves as a bridge between spirits and the living, often delivering messages.
• Can be done through clairaudience (hearing), clairvoyance (seeing), or clairsentience (feeling).
• Common in spiritualism and ancestor work.
Possession (Invocational Channeling):
• The spirit temporarily takes control of the channeler’s body.
• Practiced in Vodou, Santería, and certain shamanic traditions.
• Requires training and safeguards to ensure safe release of the spirit.
Dream Channeling (Astral Communication):
• Spirits communicate through dreams, often delivering symbolic or direct messages.
• Lucid dreaming can be used to initiate intentional spirit contact.
• Useful for ancestor work and deity communication.
Scrying (Visionary Channeling):
• Using mirrors, water, fire, or crystals to receive visions or spirit messages.
• The channeler interprets images, symbols, or direct communication from spirits.
• Often used in witchcraft and divination.
Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP) & Technomancy:
• Spirits communicate through electronic devices, such as audio recordings or digital messages.
• Used in paranormal investigation and modern occult practices.
Nature Spirit & Elemental Channeling:
• Communicating with spirits of plants, animals, and natural elements.
• Often practiced by animists, hedge witches, and shamans.
• Involves direct communion with Earth’s energies for guidance or magic.
Each method of channeling requires different levels of skill, protection, and intent. Choosing the right form depends on the practitioner’s experience, goals, and spiritual path.
Preparing for Spirit Channeling
Before attempting to channel, it’s crucial to set a foundation for safe and effective communication.
• Regularly practice grounding and centering: (visualize roots connecting you to the Earth). Develop a strong personal shielding technique (such as surrounding yourself in white or golden light). Meditate to build focus and strengthen your psychic abilities.
• Creating a Sacred Space: Cleanse the area using smoke, salt, sound, or other purification methods. Set up an altar or designated space with candles, crystals, and symbols of protection. Light incense or herbs such as mugwort, frankincense, or myrrh to enhance spirit communication.
• Choosing the Right Spirit to Channel: Ancestors and spirit guides are excellent for beginners since they have a natural connection to you. Deities and divine beings may require offerings and devotion before they engage. Elemental and nature spirits can be unpredictable but insightful. Unknown or wandering spirits should be approached cautiously, as their intentions may be unclear.
The Channeling Process
• Setting Intentions and Boundaries: Clearly state who you wish to contact and why (e.g., "I call upon my ancestors for wisdom and guidance"). Set firm boundaries by only inviting spirits of truth, light, and benevolence. Use protective symbols (such as pentagrams, sigils, or runes) to maintain control.
• Entering a Trance State: Close your eyes and focus on your breath. Use rhythmic drumming, chanting, or binaural beats to alter your consciousness. Visualize a doorway or veil between realms opening. Allow impressions, feelings, or thoughts to flow without forcing them.
• Receiving Messages: Pay attention to words, images, sensations, or emotions that come through. If using automatic writing, keep your hand loose and let it move freely. If you hear a voice, mentally confirm that the spirit has good intentions before engaging further. Avoid leading questions—ask open-ended ones instead (e.g., "What do I need to know?").
• Closing the Connection: Thank the spirit for their presence and guidance. Firmly state, "I now close this connection. You are released in peace." Visualize the doorway closing and cleanse yourself and the space using smoke, sound, or saltwater. Eat grounding foods (like bread, nuts, or chocolate) to restore balance.
I recently made a post that mentioned that part of the developing flow of Lucifer and I's vessel-training has been doing daily automatic writing sessions in the form of letters.
For those who don't know, automatic writing is like a very minimal and controlled form of possession/channeling. While possessed, I allow Lucifer to take subtle control over my hands to move them in a way that produces text.
Originally, we had been practicing with a type writer, and that works great for very long devotional rituals, but not so great for quick daily writings. More recently we've been moving towards using the phone/notes app because
1. Quiet, type writer clanking is distracting and can break the trance.
2. Can be taken anywhere, especially the bath/shower.
3. Automatically stores everything so I can return to them later without having stacks of papers everywhere.
4. Far smaller finger movements required to create full sentences means easier access and longer letters.
5. Key stroke tracking on iphone means that I can usually discern what he meant to say if ever there are typos using the autocorrect feature. (I'm hsoou to see you- is probably supposed to be- I'm happy to see you)
In that other post I also mentioned that I refrained from sharing many of these letters because they are either too raunchy or problematic for various reasons. But the session we had today produced really coherent and comparably tame notes compared to some of our other stuff, so I feel comfortable sharing this one.
Still heavily NSFW and Minors DNI.
Me:
"
Hey dad,
I was going to say good morning Lucifer, but it's almost evening now. I slept in today. You and [my bf] both took me for a real ride last night, it's always nice feeling you both inside me. I imagine you refrained from possessing me this morning because you took me so hard last night which is okay. Or, if you did possess me this morning I don't remember, I was out cold. Pretty sure I've got a cold or something , my throat is rough. You know what's so strange? I can't really recall ever having gotten sick since we started vesselhood. This would be the first time, so I don't know how you want to approach that. Idk if you would choose to refrain from possessing for the sake of my stamina, or if you would amp it up to help me heal?
I guess that also leads into the question of the ritual. I know you said you prefer we don't talk "business" in these letters but I feel compelled to ask anyways. I was planning to do the same thing I did last week and do the big ritual today, and save the reflection for tomorrow, Venus Day. I wanna know what your preference would be due to my weakness. I also have work to do, so it'd have to work around that. Idk. I could do something small, or casual. I am still reading that book on possession, and I have another one on scripts. So I could just spend the evening doing those? Idk. I also haven't decided if I wanna do drugs today. If I do it'll have to be after I'm finished working.
If I do anything tomorrow I want to do another small painting for you. I have a lot of projects on the go but I wanted to do another art offering in between if I can make the time.
Did you 'sleep' last night? I know you were still with me when I fell asleep, but you were gone when I awoke this morning. Well, I guess you were actually still there whenever [my bf] got up to go to work. But you were gone around 11. Which makes me think you did stay the night, but I'm not sure. I can feel that you're active today with whatever you're doing. So I suppose I'll be productive too, if I can be.
I'm blanking on what else I had to tell or ask you. It's almost Halloween! Which means its almost [bf] and I's anniversary. 6 years! I'm so excited. We're gonna be pirates.
Anyways, yeah. Miss you. Love you. I'm gonna go try to eat once we're done here.

Lucifer's response:
"
Hey kid,
We can still say good morning.
No. I did not possess you this morning, I had lingered within you through the night, but I did not re-enter in the morning. I slept for a moment soon after we finished. I did not have terrors.
You are ill. Your body is a bit more delicate. I will continue to possess you. I likely will not feed on you, so you can retain your energy for yourself. I may aid you if your body needs the help but your systems work well. It isn't always beneficial to disrupt them.
Your nest serves its function well. I enjoy having you both there. It's less oppressive than the closet, you lay with more comfort. So [bf] asked you last night if you will nest there, you can tell him you will not. It was a good space for the time that it served. I think you have evolved past it now. Unless you have attached to it, then we can wean it slowly. But I find your new nest preferrable and I enter you easier there.
For ritual today I would like you there again. I will caccoon and womb you. Make you soft. You should reserve time to read and scribe. Those two books. I know you have noticed I have sent you nothing. Though you search everywhere you havent found your next text. I do that deliberately. I want you to stop and read those first. You're an excited little puppy but you are also a hoarder. I appreciate the library. It forces you to give them back. and a time frame is endorced. That's better for your workflow.
No. Not hard work today. But work. Yes, casual. I will not take you deep into gnosis but I will hover around you. I'll nest you. Yes, you should be in the chamber today. In ancient times I feel people like you would not be seen for weeks at a time.
Can I share a funny story with you? It occurred to me this morning. Haha. You would find it entertaining. A secretary let's say, of mine, had asked me a peculiar question and I was curious as to how it could be summoned out of them?? It had asked me about you. They sometimes call you a word that could be comparable to prince. The yoke(???) had phrased the question in the context of substances. Asked if I was addicted to you in some way. If I had developed an addiction. To my boy?? You should know that from my perspective spirits revolve around me in nodes. Some spirits are more familiar with one face than another. You asked me yesterday who my friends are. And I told you friendship was different for me. You trapped me in that question, told me that my energy must be attracted or repelled by other energies in a system. I was proud of you then for using my tongue. This yoke was most familiar with the face I most prominently expose to you. And so from its perspective I was unusually afflicted with you. And so it wanted to know if I had developed addiction to you from over exposure. Haha
Imagine my surprise?? I'd be teased by questions alike it by Lilith or others like her. Usually not by smaller persons. So I was curious about the question and its origin. I told it I was addicted to you, to see how it would move. It only confirmed the information. Ha. I am entertained by how those smaller things preform sometimes.
So addicted is one way it could be described, which means you get me high. That is true as well. We might get high together this evening, but I will drift you through water. You'll stay in my nest. We won't go wandering tonight. We'll stay close to home. Home I would prefer, if you come. Not the office. We can study too, at the cabin. I'll meet you there.
Stay warmer today? Please. And eat more than you did yesterday. I won't scold you.
6 years is an achievement. You will be together much longer than that.
I love you.
- Dad. L
"
Notes:
His suggestion makes sense. It seems like a nest day.
I don't know what the "yoke"? Is ? Or if thats a typo? After looking into the word I found it has some association with submission and obedience. So he was probably using the word to describe a subordinate spirit? I also find it interesting that a "yoke" would ask about me as an addiction. I imagine it maybe only understands connection as compulsive because of what it is? No clue.
It's nice to know he slept last night.
