I love how different the two most prominent Vastards relationship with their entity is.
The Vast is Simon Fairchild’s CALLING, he LOVES it. Simon is the Vasts special little boy, he has been around for hundreds of years dedicating himself to this entity. His entire him is hingant on the vast and he seems to spend most his time going around and harvesting fear for it, Simon Fairchild and the Vast are inextricably linked eternally. He owes the Vast his everything and intends to give it to it.
Mike Crew??
Yeah the Vast helped him out so he stuck with it. Truthfully hed have probably gone with any of the entities but the Vast helped him first so here he is.
Yeah he’ll chuck someone into the vast, why not.
I'm sure someone more invested than me has made this point already, but while I'm banging on about ATLA, I may as well say that besides being an element of his personal character growth, Sokka's initial misogyny is an early indicator that water tribe culture as a whole is misogynistic. While certain gendered norms might be more strictly regulated in the NWT, they are very clearly present in the SWT as well, and it's a little nudge that tells us, hey! maybe this is going to be a problem later!
Removing it wholesale kind of kneecaps the world-building, because the sexism was never so much a personal character flaw so much as like, the natural consequence of raising a young boy in a highly insulated environment that tells him those ideas are the norm. And while a lot of shows - especially kids' shows - might gloss over that to keep one of their main characters suitably virtuous and likable, doing so defangs the larger implications and disconnects the character from their own origin story.
So it betrayed a fundamental misunderstanding on the part of the live action writers when they sidestepped the issue out of fear of offending modern audiences, and spun it as if they were being progressive. Sokka starts off as a bit of a chauvinist and gets over it almost immediately, because he's like, fifteen and has spent his entire life in a small isolated community, so the moment he's brought out into the larger world and gets his ass kicked by one group of women he kind of realizes that maybe not all the things he was taught to assume actually reflect reality. Which is pretty difficult to fault him for, and serves as an early example of what I personally find to be one of Avatar's greatest world-building strengths - the way it distinguishes systems of oppression from the individuals that live within them, without forgoing the connection between the two.
As an isolated instance, it's not that big a deal - but the choice to omit it showed a catastrophically poor understanding of tenets the show as a whole relies on.
I’ve scoured ao3 for frontiers of Pandora fics and have successfully read through most if not all of them. And have came to the decision that I don’t want fics from this game, no, I crave them
I want to see all the au’s highschool, college, coffee shop, all of them. I need the resistance to be a found family, c’mon guys they’re too good not to be one.
I need the sarentu crew bonding, stupid and silly moments. I need angst, hurt comfort. I crave it. I NEED RI’NELA ANGST
Fans making fun of zuko for being moody is fine. IROH making fun of his heavily abused nephew for occasionally acting grumpy is not only extremely inappropriate but also wildly out of character.
I’m not sure if there is a fandom around avatar: frontiers of pandora, but if there is would y’all be interested in small drabbles?
