Review: Singer-songwriter Avigayil hones in on an entrancing diary-like intimacy within her new single ‘Fading Away’

Since her official 2020 debut into the music industry, singer-songwriter Avigayil has slowly but surely mastered her craft in the recently turned four singles she’s released, but this doesn’t even begin to cover the beginnings of her love to create music. From her first ever written song at age 7, alongside growing her instrumental skills in piano and guitar, this rising star found herself moving to a performing arts boarding school to pursue this dream at the young age of thirteen. Now eighteen, Avigayil’s love of composing and writing music only further flourishes within each and every new single she shares with the world, and her latest ‘Fading Away’ is possibly the greatest yet.

In ‘Fading Away’, Avigayil blends painfully raw acoustics with a woozy pop sound, creating something that is both wonderfully dreamy but echoes a heartache at its core. From her opening vocal lines that sees her drawing out everything sung, Avigayil leaves you pondering every word reverberating through your ears and connecting to the somber tones that radiate through each line. Such vocals were truly made for a track of this kind, effortlessly taking the lead amongst a stripped back soundscape that sees her powerful range jump from melancholic lows to confident highs. Atop of vibrant acoustic guitar strums, long piano notes and the occasional steady drum beat, ‘Fading Away’ was made to flourish in an atmosphere of part-serenity and part-heartache as every fleeting sounds serves a purpose in the challenge of genuinely tugging upon your heartstrings with her poignant narrative. The softened assuredness that every note bears is just another reason that ‘Fading Away’ manages to be so transformative, leading you in with a comforting pillow to rest your troubles and thoughts at bay, Avigayil sets the scene to remind you you’re not alone as her prominent vocals take centre stage. Reminiscent of youthful mistakes and utilising a sound that appeals to all generations, it’s easy to imagine ‘Fading Away’ synced to a major movie or series of a teenage protagonist in one of their lower moments, and perhaps that in itself is an ode to Avigayil’s ability to leave you picturing film-like narratives to her cleverly pieced together work amongst finding yourself visualising yourself as the main character through similar struggles of your own.

In her diary-like lyricism, Avigayil uses ‘Fading Away’ to beautifully pen the heart-wrenching story of a deep friendship torn apart completely out of the blue. Entangled within her delicately written lines, ‘Fading Away’ explores the realisation that perhaps the once treasured friendship she had was not all she’d believed it to be in her mind - and instead, maybe this person wasn’t all she’d thought them to be either. From the incredibly touching opening line ‘Used to know my secrets, now I have secrets from you’, it’s hard to ignore this striking narrative as it hits you immediately entering this listening experience. Exploring the all too well known feelings that come with losing a friend who was once close, and loosing the ability to share with them all the snippets of your life you once would’ve come to them with immediately. Circling back to the thought that she ‘ignored all the signs’ a few times through the song, much of ‘Fading Away’ certainly manages to emphasise a deep regret amongst the other feelings of hurt and sadness, picturing a very real state of mind post-friend-breakup where Avigayil evidently ponders that she should’ve been more cautious regardless of the pain she’s now going through. Although much of life is to live and to learn, it’s clear to us from this line alone that ‘Fading Away’ represents a musician with an authenticity and realism that some artists can lack within their lyricism, as Avigayil doesn’t hesitate to depict her life and her own downfalls amongst some of her worst moments.

From her authentic words to her authentic, one-of-a-kind personality, Avigayil shares that "I feel like for myself I do not have a role model like this. A woman in the spotlight that genuinely doesn’t care about her appearance, and I wish I did. So I just feel like how could I not be that person for others?"

South Hebron Hills ‘Settler Violence’ – The Other Side of the Story, By Sheri Oz | United with Israel

The video is credited to a group of activists, headed by Ari Kaniel, who spoke to United with Israel about the events.

“There were two parts to the incident on Simchat Torah, the first occurring when a group of residents of Avigayil were on a hike between their outpost and Havat Maon. A large group of Arab men came out from al-Mufaqara, attacking them with rocks and sticks. Instead of scampering away in fear, these unarmed Jews picked up rocks and drove the Arabs back into their village.”

Kaniel claims that the Jews were able to drive them back because the Arabs are not used to Jews defending themselves. The settlers kept up the fighting in the village itself until the IDF came. This is when the army used tear gas to break up the hostilities, according to Kaniel. “In this incident, three Jews were seriously injured and about 10 lightly injured,” he said.

“About an hour after this first incident, a few dozen Arabs amassed in the hills preparing to storm Havat Maon. At the sound of their approach,[Jewish] volunteers went out with their cameras to document it.”

Kaniel said that the IDF arrived quickly at this point, before the Arabs could enter the village. None of the Arabs in the video were arrested despite the fact that their faces are clearly seen. Jews were arrested for their part in the first incident.

“There is no film of the first incident since, as Orthodox Jews, they did not take cameras out with them on the hike — on holidays and Shabbat they only bring out the cameras when something has already started to happen.”
