Hero Form Appearance: A combination of a caballero’s stage worthy costume and YuYuYu’s Hero Form Outfits. The undersuit of the outfit is a sugar skull white, acting as a canvas. And while the main outfit starts out marigold orange, it becomes a jet black starting at the lower half of the sleeves, the lower half of the pants, and the tailcoat. Accent colors are pink, green, black, gray, silver, gold, and white. The shoes, gloves, hat, bow tie, and belt all have patterns of marigolds on them, and the only other accessory is his bow tie clasp, which resembles the flower. The flower’s petal shape can be seen in the tailcoat and collar.

These giant marigolds, Tagetes erecta ‘Giant Orange’ (African marigold, American marigold, Aztec marigold), were making a bold autumn display alongside one of the barns at Great Dixter, East Sussex.

Have you noticed? During the scene when Ernesto starts to give Miguel his blessing, if you watch with a very sharp eye, you will see that the Aztec marigold petal does not glow. Now it happens so fast that it’s easy to miss, especially because immediately after Ernesto says the words, Hector speaks up and enters the room.

This interruption seemingly prevents the blessing from taking place entirely, but if you think back to when Imelda first tried to send Miguel home, the petal instantly glowed and continued to glow after she says, “I give you my blessing.”

So by taking into account the petal from the earlier scene, it can be realized that Aztec marigold petals only glow when a deceased person wants to send his/her living relative(s) back to the living world. Therefore, the fact that the petal does not glow in the latter scene is a subtle clue (and foreshadowing) that Ernesto is not truly Miguel’s great-great-grandfather.

On a minor note, even though the audience knows the truth by this time, when Hector gives Miguel his (Hector) and Imelda’s blessing, the petal he is holding immediately glows, just as those held by Imelda always did previously.

The orange flower seen throughout the film is the Aztec marigold (known also as the Mexican marigold or the Cempasúchil). The flower is used in the tradition of Dia de Muertos in México to guide the deceased to the living.
