Is she aromantic?
disclaimer: this is a hc, not speculating on what the writers intentions were.
Azula (Avatar the Last Airbender)
Yes, she's aromantic
No, but lack of attraction is part of her identity (ex. demi)
Sure, why not
I like this headcanon, but I also like seeing her depicted as alloromantic
No, I view her as alloromantic
I don't know this character but she has aromantic vibes
I don't know this character
AZULAAAAAAAAAA
May or may not be my favorite character in ATLA🤭 seriously tho she’s so complex and well written. I really wish people saw her more like a 3 dimensional character rather than just “oooh scary mean villain”. To be fair, however, I feel like most people do see her as a multifaceted character, but there are a few that just don’t, and it’s really annoying because she is so INSANELY WELL WRITTEN that it’s a borderline travesty when people view her as anything but exactly that. Because on one hand, she **is** a child literally looking for her parent’s approval, love, and attention. But on the other, we all know damn well that if Zuko was able to end up the way he did, she should have been able to, at the very least be even just slightly more empathetic or even a better person than what she ended up being in the show.
Anyways, that whole rant is for another day, and I’m sure I’ll find the energy to post about it soon, but all I’ll say is; it’s not her fault for the way she turned out. But that doesn’t cover her for her LITERAL WAR CRIMES😭💀
Enjoy the art, and have a great day my friends!!🫶🏼🫶🏼
Azula isn’t irredeemable because redemption is morally impossible for her. She’s irredeemable because of her narrative role. Redeeming her would contradict the original series, where she was established as a cautionary tale and as Zuko’s foil.
Kuvira is different. The Legend of Korra never framed her as a cautionary counterpart to the protagonist in the same way, so giving her a redemption arc doesn’t overturn the narrative function she originally served. The same can’t be said for Azula.
I have ATLA running on my background while I'm working and the episode playing right now was the beach episode.
Azula, girl ily so much but your social skills are so bad I'm actually cringing. Ik it's bad because you're literally raised that way but someone please get my baby a lesson in normal interactions.
Azula was always written as a cautionary tale. The point of her character isn’t that she deserves no empathy, but that talent, power, and abuse don’t excuse the choices she makes. You can feel sorry for her suffering while recognizing that she’s still the story’s villain. Empathy doesn’t change the narrative’s purpose.
Growing up realizing I relate more to Azula than I ever did Katara or Toph
Wanted to share/elaborate on some of the headcanons I have for Azula that have developed over the years AND only got stronger as I write my fanfic "Azula's Saga" (both an AU and a Sokkla fanfic)

(which is still being worked on, life's being life y'know?)
anywho
an earlier post I made said that I have the headcanon that Azula's Autistic. I believe this wholeheartedly and ALSO it's backed up by the show in many ways but the biggest one is the Beach Episode.
I also believe that Azula's Bisexual, though this is more of my own personal headcanon/bias (I myself am Autistic and Bisexual). this headcanon isn't as backed up by the show as well as evidence of her being Autistic.
to elaborate on her Autism, well, I believe that she's high functioning (like me) but also she masks like a TON. and growing up under Ozai? who demands nothing but perfection but also encourages the worst qualities? (aggressiveness, brutality, etc.)
yeah it makes sense why she thinks that this is right, especially considering Ozai's influence as both the only family present (Zuko and Ursa and Iroh not present) and the only true authority figure as well.
Diagnosis possibilities? well that's unlikely in a medieval world not only would Autism be poorly understood, but also consider the fact that Ozai scorched Zuko for speaking out of turn. Ozai is obsessed with control and political influence.
if Ozai learned that the prodigy of his bloodline is "flawed" or "broken", political fallout would be insane. also there's a high likelihood that Azula would have been misdiagnosed which would be a huge can of worms
does this excuse what she did? hell no. not at all.
I love Azula a lot, fave character in the ATLA franchise, but yeah she did some insane stuff.
but that's this little rant done!
have a good day!
