m.list - ask - who am i?
SHE HAD ALWAYS been the loud one, the one who always said anything on her mind without any regrets, the one who wasn't afraid to voice her opinions or take anyone's shit.
Some people loved that from her, some wished they had her confidence, they went to her to seek some kind of advice in ways to be just like her- and she would always give it to them willingly, but she made sure to warn them.
It scares people off.
For the longest time she had always been in search of someone. Not in the sake of having someone to be with for Valentines day, having someone on their arm and for once not to get weird looks while walking down the hallway all alone with her head down. No, of course not.
She wanted to be loved, to be taken on dates and to be cherished and treated like a princess. She wanted someone who would wake up at 3 a.m. to a text asking for McDonalds and then waiting patiently at the door for the food to come.
Although with this confidence it brought amazing friends who treated her like the princess she ways wanted to be, but that was never enough. None of it was. Sure she loved her friends and would do the same for them but they wouldn't kiss her or hold her hand everywhere. She thought of them like family, nothing more. Except, one.
Elliot.
He might have been the best thing that had ever happened to her. They meet the night of New years at some random upperclassmen's house. Music was blaring and teens where downing shots like it was the last drop of water on earth. Bodies on Bodies grinding on each other as Nicki Manji rapped to some hyped up beat.
It had gotten hot after awhile despite all the windows and doors being wide open by the kids walking in and out of the house. She tried to find a escape route, somewhere to hide out until it was time to leave. Every room was occupied by strangers doing it, the loud sounds that came from their mouths echoed throughout the hall.
She gagged but kept walking, making sure to cover both ears to block out the sound. After awhile she came across a door that had been shut, but there was no sound coming from behind it.
Bracing herself she opens the door to a boy hunched over a washing machine, there was white powder in a line and some coated his fingers and the tip of his nose.
At the sound he jumps back and brushes the grinded up drugs off the machine and onto the floor. After that they became friends.
Friends, was all they were.
But she wanted more, she wanted him to treat her like a princess, she wanted him to get her a costly burger and a small fry. She wanted him.
But she was afraid that he didn't feel the same because she was loud and outspoken and uncaring of what others thought. In some cases the last part would be a good thing but some boys just didn't like that. She thought Elliot was one of them.
No matter how many times Rue, Jules or even a disapproving Maddy tried to convince her that he did in-fact like her, nothing would convince her other wise. Unless he confessed.
that never happened.
which is why she was walking down the hall with her head down and hands shoved into the pockets of her hand-me-down sweater. where's that confidence now?
she was getting those weird stares, she could feel it. it was like medusa was behind you just waiting- wanting you to turn around and look her in the eyes. [y/n] was not going to give her that satisfaction.
she speed walks to her looker, quickly unlocking it and shoving her head inside so far that people wouldn't see her cry almost of embarrassment.
The bright hearts and pink stars that filled the hallway made her sick, she just wanted to take a ladder and rip all of them down just to burn them to shreds. She didn't, that would be selfish and mean to those who had someone. but nonetheless it made her feel lonely and disgusting.
Something within her said that this may be the day where she'd get asked out, something within her said that Elliot would be the one. But the day had just started so it will take time.
Her shoulder dips and the itch of a cut up tank-top brushes the side of her hip, she looks over and sees Jules held onto her side as rue stands beside her swaying her hips.
"hey [y/n]!" jules smiles at her moving to the side to let [y/n] empty out her backpack.
"hi Jules." she mutters trying to ignore the concern look rue was giving her from behind.
"how are you doing?" Jules grabs rue by the arm and pulls her close, [y/n] involuntarily rolls her eyes and looks away.
she shrugs her shoulder and zips the backpack up "could be better, kinda wish that we got this day off like other schools but I guess it's fine."
Jules frowns at her and leans all her weight to her legs, "yeah I know, I'm sorry."
she waves her off and slams the locker shut, it was loud and made some students look her way. "it's fine."
Jules looks at her, then to rue with a defeated look on her face. rue sighs and takes a step forward towards [y/n]. "look, I'm not supposed to say anything but, I heard Elliot was planning on asking you something today." she backs away as [y/n] starts to smile. "but," her face falls "I don't know about what. so just..try not to get your hopes up okay?"
she nods and the group disperses making their way to their morning classes.
4 periods had gone by and nothing had happened. By the time [y/n] had finally lost all hope it was lunch time. The lunch lady's still gave them regular foods but this time there was a side of vanilla pudding, the container was in the shape of the heart and red edible confetti sprinkled in the inside. She threw it away.
She had seen Elliot in the hallways, but every time she looked at him and made sure to keep his gaze on the floor. He would interact with Rue, but not her. He would interact with Jules, but not her. Hell he even talked to Maddy.
Right as she was picking at the soggy mash potatoes she feels a tap on her shoulder, everyone at the table looks up. Confused, she turned around and with a bright smile Elliot takes his hand off of her shoulder and infront of her.
"what?"
Jules and Rue smile at her and nod their heads towards Elliot as if saying - take it idiot! don't ask questions just go-.
Reluctantly she does and tenderly holds her hand as they walk down the hallways of East Highland. Elliot says nothing, keeping his eyes infront of him but rubbing her hand to let her know that he is there.
"Elliot, where are we going?"
He says nothing.
She tries a few more times but gets nothing out of him until he pulls her into a empty classroom that was covered in instruments and sheet music.
“I don’t want to sound cheesy, but I need you to know how I feel.”
she steps back and looks at him in the eye. There's no way...right?
"what? what're you talking about?"
"I know its technically the day of love and I was really hesitant on doing this because I know you hate the 14th and whatever but I knew I wouldn't be able to do this any other time and-"
she cuts him off and grins "what are you talking about, Elliot."
He doesn't meet her gaze and instead seeks comfort in the celling. He takes a deep breath and wrings his hands together. "I, I like you [y/n], I always have since the first day I meant you. I knew that you were special when you sat down with me in that laundry room and made sure I was safe while doing drugs. You didn't stop me because you knew that I wouldn't. Yet you sat there and made sure I was safe. You always made sure that I was safe." he takes another breath and steps forward towards her, she was shaking, cold sweat going throughout her body as she tried to tell herself that this was infact not a dream.
"How you made me fall in love with you is still beyond me. But I know that I love you and always will, I don't care if you're loud, or you like speaking out for yourself, I love it. Because it makes you seem brave and strong, that's all I've ever wanted, so." he finally looks at her for the first time in 5 minutes, he was grinning hard and nervous tears grew in his eyes. "will you go out with me?"
this was like one of those cheesy Disney movies where the girl gets the guys despite all the worries the girl had within her. She normally would have thought that scenarios like this was gross and cringey but with Elliot that's not the case. something happened today that wasn't bad, he liked her for her and he wouldn't change that for the world.
so, she gives him a sheepish smile,
"of course I will."
