Litchfield National Park near Darwin, Australia
20.000 Flying Foxes
In Kooloonbung Creek Nature Park in the little town of Port Macquarie, over 20.000 Greyheaded Flying Foxes have made themselves a home in a small nature park.
The walkway leading through the park is well-maintained and makes for a lovely 1-1,5 hour hike with an amazing(and very noisey) surprise waiting for you at the end!
Hostel life is...
Feeling the joy of arriving in an empty dorm in a new hostel so you can pick out the best bed. (A bottom bunk, furthest away from the door, in a corner, with easy access to a power outlet)
Hostel life is...
Awkwardly introducing yourself to your new roommates after arriving at a new hostel and being drunken best friends 5 hours later.
Backpackers Tip | 2
Before booking a hostel, check how far away it is from where you’ll arrive into town(mainly if you’ll be arriving with the bus/train).
After a tiring 10 hour busride, you won’t want to travel for another hour with public transport before finally reaching your hostel.
Backpackers Tip| 6
It’s cheaper to book a hostel on their own website!
Websites and apps like Hostelworld and Booking.com are very useful when searching for hostels in a specific area or with specific requirements.
Booking the hostel on the hostels own website however, often costs less, because these “middleman” apps/websites charge more for the same rooms so they can make a profit off of it. It’s definitly worth checking!
Backpackers Tip |4
Not enough space in your backpack for all your stuff?
Role up your clothes as much as possible and store them in vacuum sealed plastic bags! This will save a lot of space in your backpack and will keep all your clothes as wrinkle-free as possible.
Hostel life is...
Lying awake at 3 a.m. contemplating murder because one of your roommates is loudly snoring and keeping the entire dorm awake.
