Pining and pain, yeah, exactly. Not that I'm not used to the concept, but still:

Imagine: When it's Protagonist's turn to explain Tenet to Neil and that boy has SO MANY questions (because Neil has a PHYSICS degree people, he is a nerd about this stuff also, he probably understands MUCH more than Protagonist does) and Protagonist has rush of sympathy for Neil back in that shipping container.

So he lets Neil keep him up asking questions before eventually dragging him back to bed and distracting him.

(he'll take him to someone who can explain better than him the next day -let the scientists geek out together to their hearts content - he'll just sit back and enjoy the view.)
