“Bad Princess: True Tales from Behind the Tiara” by Kris Waldherr

Originally, I believed this book was a fictional novel about a princess that has gone rogue. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised to find it was a historical account of once living princesses who had gone against the grain and the normal idea of what a princess was supposed to be. It travelled through the ages to all areas of the world and recounted all the deeds done by the regal while being relatable to the youth of this generation. A very informative read about what makes a princess a princess and how our perceptions of royalty have changed over the centuries. I recommend this to anyone who wants to further their knowledge on history, including children who want to read something other than fairy tales.

This book tells the amazing-but-true, ridiculous-but-true, and awesome-but-true stories of plenty of real-life princesses. There are stories of princesses who grew up to be queens, or who schemed and manipulated their way into power. This book also provides insight into how being a princess wasn’t all it was cracked up to be, because most of them had little power on their own or were forced into arranged marriages for political reasons. Many readers may also be surprised to learn about “dollar princesses,” American girls from wealthy families who would visit Europe to try to marry into nobility!

Give this book to older children and younger teens who are fascinated by princesses, fairy tales, and history!
