author summary : Why ever would Leonard want a boring day with nothing worse but a case of the sniffles to treat, when he could crawl through the maintenance shafts of a space station filled with Klingons instead? It's an odd chain of events that lead him to this point, but when push comes to shove (and Klingons come knocking), someone's gotta take charge and make sure they all survive until help arrives.

I am weak for strong and badass Bones. I can't help it. That's why I am now doing a rec on one of my favorite ever McKirk fanfiction,  Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder by laughter_now.

Bones being the poster boy for Starfleet medical track, he is asked to go help a medical team on a spacial station to find a cure for a deadly virus. Even if he doesn't want to be apart from his husband, he decided to accept the three months mission. Of course, everything goes to hell and Bones find himself in a situation where he has to fight for his life, but also for the safety of all the station, without the backup from the enterprise crew and his husband.

I love this fanfiction for so many reasons. First of all, the relashionship between Jim and Bones is sweet as hell. They miss each other deeply and you can't help feeling bad for them, even if their antics save us from complete sadness and despair …

Bones is a total badass. I love how this story show us his determination and his trully good heart. He has principles and don't hesitate to act. Being a badass and all, we have the opportunity to have a lot of Hurt!Bones, and obviously, so much overprotective Jim … Once again, the crew is one against adversity and of course, we love that.

The author is just gifted, and she really respected the characters, while being able to adap them to her story. Her OCs are as interesting than the canon ones ( I am totally rooting for the CMO of the station !). So yeh, if you are looking for story focus on Bones, him being a badass, and of course, total cuteness from the McCoy - Kirk Duo, I deeply recomand this fic =) !

Length : more than 90 000 words Author short summary : Section 31 wants Leonard. Leonard wants Jim. And Jim, well, Jim wants people to stop taking what’s his. For my first rec, I going to start big. This is a long slow burn fanfiction, and to tell the ugly truth, I spend a whole nigh reading it, because it was simply impossible not to continue, the story being too engrossing and the writer style so good. What is it about ? It starts just after Star Trek : Into Darkness, and explores the consequencies of the serum’s creation by Bones, and what happened when he refused to share with Starfleet intelligence the formula. And then begin a long and painfull adventure for the doctor, where he has to fight against dubious motivations, but also his own mind and his doubts. The McKirk is present almost from the beginning of the fanfic, but is not the central point of the story, even if it plays an important role in the development of Bones. For all the people who loves : Bamf!Bones, Hurt!Bones, depressed!Bones, this is in the top five fics I ever read for this character and this tags( and of course, stay tuned for the others ).It was also very interesting to see the interaction of Bones with other characters than Jim, and to witness the familly the Starfleet crew has become. I strongly recomend this fic to all the McKirk lovers =) !

Summary in simple words: Section 31 wants Leonard. Leonard wants Jim. And Jim, well, Jim wants people to stop taking what’s his.

Not so simple words: Leonard knows the serum he used to save Jim from death has the potential for Universal Armageddon, and he's not the only one. Starfleet Intelligence wants the formula, but Leonard's a stubborn man. He's not about to hand that power over to anyone, not even if he's being ordered to. Lost from the Enterprise and everyone he cares about, it's up to Leonard to stop the rogue agency known as Section 31 from destroying thousands of lives, and changing the galaxy forever.

Takes place between Jim's resurrection and the beginning of the 5 year mission at the end of STID. (COMPLETE!)

I'm currently thinking about a scenario in which Bones saves everyone by staying aboard a ship that's going to explode, a lot like Jim's father and the last thing he tells the bridge and jim is that he shouldn't be worried because Bones will be back

and then the ship explodes

and jim cries and all and the next scene is how something falls from the sky and lands on a planet, making a huge hole

and then a totally damaged, bleeing, broken bones, open flesh wounds McCoy walks out of the sinkhole, his injuries healing quickly and the villagers from the city come to the sinkhole and Bones keeps walking, his bones healing, skin closing within seconds

yeah.. some mysterious mutant!Bones thing

like, Jim decided to stay on the ship because of the whole "I'm the captain" thing even if it's not the Enterprise which explodes and Spock is already in the escape capsule and Jim takes Bones wrists and says: "Bones, I-" but Bones interrupts him by kissing him deeply, both hands on Jim's head and then he ends the kiss, saying: "I know, Jim. Me too." and Bones kisses Jim again and suddenly shoves Jim into the escape capsule, closing it quickly so that Jim isn't the one staying on the ship to get them enough time to escape... And Jim punches the thick glass wall which now separates Bones and him and Bones smiles at Jim before turning away to get back on the bridge

and Bones sits down on the captain's chair, calling the Enterprise and the escape capsule and says: "This is doctor McCoy..." silence from the Enterprise, "Jim and Spock are safe; get them and bring the back home, Enterprise." and then: "Goddammit, I hate space." and he breathes hard and Jim cries but he just can hear Bones,

"Jim, don't cry. I love you. I won't die here, I won't leave you, I promised you that. I will be back. Jim. I WILL BE BACK. Believe me that one time; I will find a way to come back to you and Spock and our ship." and then the ship explodes and Bones is cut off.

and silence on the Enterprise and inside the safety capsule.

and then Bones falls from the sky onto a planet and he asks one of the villagers if there's a Starfleet base on this planet and the guy nods

and Bones gets into the village, into a grocery store, drinking water and eating sandwichs before even paying for them but then he goes to the checkout and pays via his datas, don't ask me how, just imagine it works somehow with numbers or so and he pays

and then next scene:

jim and spock and the Enterprise crew are standing in a room with admirals who wait for jim to sign the document that Bones is officially dead but Jim hesitates

they all wear their grey uniforms

and it's completely silent and Jim puts the pencil on the paper when suddenly the doors burst open and a cate gtes in, panting, saying: "Sir, there is someone in the front hall who says he is... He says he's Doctor McCoy."

and Jim looks at Spock and Spock back at him and they all run to the front hall and-

"GODDAMMIT, I'm not dead!"

and then Jim walks up to Bones, looking shocked and reaches out for Bones, putting his hand on Bones face, like: "...Bones..?" and Bones smiles: "Yeah, it's me kid."

and happy hugging and kissing

and next scene is in which the bridge crew and Bones are in a room, sitting around a table and Bones telling them about his mutation, that he can't really get hurt physically and die of injuries or sickness
