Perfect canon whump scenes aside, my hands-down favourite way to consume whump is via fic.

This fic by @bunny-cops is pretty much the epitome of a perfect whump fic. It has:

- in-depth world building - characterisations nailed down like shingles in storm season - a solid, satisfying length (currently 18k and climbing) - the complexity of guilt and regret mixed in with angst and danger and fear - whump scenes like you wouldn’t believe (neatly hitting all my favourite tropes of injured character being a BAMF, characters collapsing and the injured character providing medical advice about his own condition)

I can’t recommend this fic enough - everyone needs to read it!

Written for the prompt: "Bones-the-doctor ALWAYS saves Jim. Period. This is canon, fanon, and trope. Khan blood is a miracle, and everything is pretty happyshiny at the end of STID, but we didn't get to see the intervening weeks when Bones worked feverishly, jacking himself up on stimulants to keep working on the cure, or when it looked like Jim might die anyhow despite the massive compromise of medical ethics, or when an exhausted and terrified Bones finally let fly on the command crew for not calling him down to engineering in the first place, goading Spock into a meld to share the moment of Jim's death. And how much of this will Lazarus-Jim ultimately find out? How does this change not only the Jim/Bones dynamic, but the way everyone looks at Bones?"

As we all know, Jim Kirk has a little accident at the end of Star trek : Into Darkness. Yeh, he died.

This is a very traumatic experience for him when he finally come back from death thanks to Bones : He has this memories of his last moments, but also it takes a lot of times to recover. No fun times indeed. But what we don't see that often is the impact it had on his friends, and on one person in paticuliar : Bones.

This story explores the consequencies of Jim death on Bones, when he was the one spending days, weeks on the serum, driving himself crasy to find the cure, rejecting all of his main principles for the man he loves, forgetting about himself and his own health, cutting himself from his friends and all the support they could provide him with.

When I read this fic, I was affected a lot by all the sadness and heavy sorrow Bones suffers throught all the story. While he is as stuborn as usual, he let himself being torned apart by his pain, and take it out on his friends more than once. The crew is very worried about him, and even more when they witness one big break down he has. Even when Jim finally woke up, it will take a lot of time for him to understant what happened, to be able to help his friend recover along his own healing, and understand his feelings. 

This story is very interesting in the way it explored Bones reaction to Jim's death, but also the relashionship he has with the crew. The Hurt!Bones is almost at the highest you can get it and it is very well done! Be ready to feel your soul tearring apart from the sadness !

The Red Death by McShipIt

Length : more than 90 000 words Author short summary : Section 31 wants Leonard. Leonard wants Jim. And Jim, well, Jim wants people to stop taking what’s his. For my first rec, I going to start big. This is a long slow burn fanfiction, and to tell the ugly truth, I spend a whole nigh reading it, because it was simply impossible not to continue, the story being too engrossing and the writer style so good. What is it about ? It starts just after Star Trek : Into Darkness, and explores the consequencies of the serum’s creation by Bones, and what happened when he refused to share with Starfleet intelligence the formula. And then begin a long and painfull adventure for the doctor, where he has to fight against dubious motivations, but also his own mind and his doubts. The McKirk is present almost from the beginning of the fanfic, but is not the central point of the story, even if it plays an important role in the development of Bones. For all the people who loves : Bamf!Bones, Hurt!Bones, depressed!Bones, this is in the top five fics I ever read for this character and this tags( and of course, stay tuned for the others ).It was also very interesting to see the interaction of Bones with other characters than Jim, and to witness the familly the Starfleet crew has become. I strongly recomend this fic to all the McKirk lovers =) !

Do you know what i want? I want a hurt!bones fic pre-relationship where bones has to go on a mission on some supposedly "safe" planet without Jim since it's like medical thing. Like, the people of this planet need medical assistance or something. And bones bitches about it because that's what bones does, and jim encourages bones to go, even though he knows bones would do it anyway for the health and safety of people. So everything is going well until they get a distress signal and the team beams back up and bones is just one bloody mess. And jim can feel everything in his body constricting and he fights the urge to cling onto bones and will him back to wellness as he watches Christine and M'Benga cart him away to Med Bay. And Jim stays by Bones's side throughout his recovery, but instead of admitting his love for Bones like every other fic, he keeps it in, because he thinks that confessing his love might be a weakness that their foes or something could use against him even though this is very OOC. So instead Jim watches over Bones like a hawk, makes sure that he's never in any danger. He never sends Bones on any away missions anymore except when absolutely needed. And even though he does this to keep Bones safe he cant stop the nightmares about Bones dying from happening. Bones notices the sudden change in his friend but never says anything about it, scared that it might ruin their friendship. So when Bones dies on a diplomatic mission on a once peaceful planet that has gone rogue on Star Fleet, Jim cant help but regret never telling Bones that he loves him.

bones would be a mess; broken bones and oozing, bloody wounds. the whole crew would be a nervous buzz in and out of the medbay, but kirk, kirk would be uncharacteristically quiet. he would sit in his room at his desk, calculating the severity of the wounds and the likely hood that mccoy would survive. he would almost go mad because bones is bones. he's the doctor, the healer, jim's best fucking friend.
