Just reading through one of @theamityelf ‘s posts about a hypoethetical what if Makoto Naegi was somehow in class 77-b’s killing game from the start AU, and my mind jumped to a MOSTLY unrelated idea I keep playing with on and off. One that’s hinged entirely on the fact that Makoto and Nagito share a VA. like I’m not sure I’ve ever seen it commented on, even in jokey, meta heavy settings like UTDP or DRs, but I feel like it HAS to sometimes feel a little surreal for everyone just how much those two sound alike. (And yes, they aren’t the only characters to share a VA, but the fact that they also are made to act as both mirrors and foils to each other specifically has got to make talking to them both at the same time feel really surreal. )
So the scenario that keeps popping into my mind (Spoilers for anyone who somehow hasn’t played all of SDR2, of course):
It’s part way through the sixth trial. The Fake Naegi has already appeared and been dealt with, and the real one has stepped in. Now at this stage, Hajime is BEYOND tired of being jerked around and emotionally messed with, and Junko AI has been doing everything in her power to poke EVEN MORE at his biggest insecurities. Like he’s still not all all over being told he was talentless and everything that happened right after that, but now this GIANT girl appears and is just casually calling him (and everyone else) a bunch of chumps who aren’t even the real main characters. And then along comes the one she considers to be the person who all of this, ALL of this, was REALLY for, the true protag, the one who apparently is responsible for them being in the simulation in the first place?! And he sounds SO MUCH like the person who he has conflicted feelings for at best…the person who would not stop giving him a hard time for being a reserve course student after he found out…the other person who went to incredible extremes for the stated sake of serving a greater good…and this new person ALSO just so happens to have originally had the same talent Nagito has…and he now has the title that Nagito directly said he wanted in his final video/last will and testament…
I picture all of this going through Hajime’s mind, and him eventually just SNAPPING and deciding this has to be another trick. This…this Makoto Naegi HAS to just be Nagito in disguise! Somehow. It’s so obvious. Nagito thought he could fool him again, but look, he even made the fake name an anagram of his own, probably just so he could MOCK him when they worked out the truth. …or was this always his real name after all? Well, whatever the case, he was DONE being fooled.
“Makoto Naegi…Nagito Komaeda?…did you think I wouldn’t spot it?”
“I’m sorry, what?” Said the obvious liar with such wide eyed confused sincerity on his stupidly adorable little face that Hajime felt like slapping him for the sheer audacity of it all. “Hinata-kun, what are you talking about? Are you feeling alright?”
The concern sounded so REAL, and caused such a flood of conflicting emotions in him that Hajime struggled to formulate the next words. “You REALLY think I wouldn’t spot it?” He finally growled out. “ Nagito Komaeda…Makoto Naegi DA. Really, Nagito, ‘I Am Makoto Naegi?’ Just how STUPID do you think…”
“Hey, woah, woah…” the liar flailed for a moment, putting on a show of being caught off guard. “I look…okay, you really aren’t doing okay, and I don’t blame you even a little. The last few days have been hard on us all, but you’ve had the worst of it, haven’t you? Would it help if you sat down? …I…wait what are you…Ack!”
While “Makoto’ had been attempting to placate him in that INSULTING sincere sounding tone, Hajime, having had enough, stepped over his bench and strode across the courtroom, so focused on his goal that he barely felt the distance of the short walk. Once in front of the FRAUD, he reached down, grabbed him by the collar of his STUPID hoodie, and hauled him up to eye level.
“How did you do it? How did you do ALL of this? And how did you make yourself SHORTER?! …and WHY did you think you could get away with this when you BARELY even bothered to change your voice?” He glared into the wide hazel eyes, daring him to deny the obvious, all while barely registering the confused yelling from the rest of the room.
“Man…and here I thought it would take me telling him about the Kamukura project before he broke this bad.” Muttered Junko AI to herself.

Meanwhile, several months earlier, in a different game entirely, Kamaru Naegi was roused from an unplanned, trauma induced three day nap by a familiar voice asking her is she was awake. “…Makoto…?” She said slowly, her brain in a fog. She opened her eyes, to see a tall, gangly figure in…what was UP with that outfit…? Standing a few feet away from her. If she had been more awake, she might have thought it was odd the way his mouth was hanging open, as if he’d just been shocked into silence by something. Or the way his pale face was turning more and more pink. “Makoto…? You look different…when did you get so tall? And…what happened to your hair? … Makoto, what happened to YOU?”
“Ah…um. Well…about that. I’m…I’m incredibly…I’m So so incredibly…I”
She didn’t wait for him to finish his thought, now in command of herself enough to push off the bed, cross the room in two huge steps, and throw her arms around the taller boy (thus cutting his words off entirely). She buried his head in his chest. In between sobs, she managed to somehow say “I…it’s okay. You don’t have to tell me right away….I-I’m just…so glad…you’re here! Makoto…!”
Servant awkwardly patted the sobbing girl on the back with his working hand, his face burning hot as he stared blankly into the middle distance. How on earth was he going to explain this misunderstanding? How on earth was he going to ATONE for the sin of causing such…somehow being mistaken for……how…? And the shameful knot of happiness in his stomach at being compared to HIM of all people…by his own sister? …he made soft indistinct noises of comfort as he continued to awkwardly pat her, knowing that whatever he did, it would have to happen before the children got impatient and came looking for them.
(That’s all I got really. Okay, bye.)
