Okay okay so consider:

Soon-To-Be-Whumpee is in a lot of debt with some bad people. What they did to get that debt is up in the air, but it doesn't really matter- what matters is that they can't pay it back.

Now, when I say "bad people" I mean if Soon-To-Be-Whumpee doesn't pay, they'll kill them. The time comes to collect payment and Suddenly-Whumpee has nothing.

Now, Whumpee doesn't want to die. So they beg or bargin their way out of it, something along the lines of "Please, isn't there another way I can pay you back? I don't have any money, please I'll do anything!"

And its that last line that sealed their fate. Whumpee accidently sold themself into servitude trying to preserve their life.
