These two have been eating holes in my brain since like. Episode 4. So behold my extremely self indulgent AU.

I tried not to give too much away here, as I’m planning on writing a fic with this exact concept. I just need to finish planning the outline for it first, and then I’m going to begin writing and posting as I go.

• @poeticsynapse's witch renhardt au! Owen is ALL genders and neurodivergent. Ren is cluelessly gay/bear gay and a literal puppy. Despite their incredibly limited interactions, I think they had similar beliefs in that they wanted to protect who they loved. Both strong fighters. Owen fell first, Ren fell harder. Their dynamic would be "i don't trust anyone, why are you looking after me?" x "if i lose one more person, I will cease to exist." A different angle could perhaps be the fact that Owen is a vampire being found out later, which could be great hurt/comfort & betrayal towards Ren. love them sm they've never done anything wrong in their lives <3

• More propaganda: what if the worst people you’ve ever know somehow manage to make each other better despite the insane capacity to make each other worse. What if love was meeting someone who bloodied their hands for you as easily as you bloodied yours for them.

WITCH REN AU DOODLES!!!!! Decided to draw them to motivate myself to continue writing and figure out the rest of the dreaded Plot, and I’ll admit. It’s working. They’ve consumed me like a mold.

Ren, as a witch, is able to shapeshift! Not that he knows how to do that (yet). He’ll transform as a way to travel or blend into the wilderness and sometimes as a way to curl up to his people in increasingly ridiculous ways. Owen will be cuddling with a human-shaped Ren and then suddenly there’s a Maine coon trying to smother him. Which he can do without consequence, since Owen doesn’t need to breathe. Ren will also occasionally shift different body parts, rather than his whole body. Hence the needle-like teeth. He deserves to be a bit freaky, as a treat.

If anyone has any questions about the characters, dynamics, this post, or anything else you can think of about this au, let me know! It genuinely helps me think through the plot and betters the story as a whole. Plus I love talking about them so it is no chore HDIDHSJDJFHEJRJ

1. Does Owen and Legs (I think they're canon to the au, yeah?) like Ren's needle teeth?

2. How are they handling Ren's witchhood?

Owen and Legs are canon, yes!

They’re both unsettled by the needle teeth in an undefined, primal way — but that’s a normal reaction to have to an apex predator. Especially one that fits within the realm of uncanny valley.

Outside of that though, Legs finds Ren’s ability to shapeshift fascinating. He’ll often (with Ren’s permission) ask him to switch back and forth between different types of teeth to study how the change occurs, and what Ren can do with the different sets. Ren is happy to oblige, both to humor the Doc and for his own curiosity. He’s still trying to figure out what he can do, now that he knows just what he is. (He’ll take any advantage he can get, to protect the town.)

Owen is quite taken with the needle teeth. They’re freaky, don’t get him wrong — and it’s a bit unnerving to realize that, out of the two of them, a bite from Ren is more likely to fuck someone up — but he finds them, like everything else about Ren, hopelessly endearing. It’s nerve-wracking though, when people first come to Oakhurst and Ren’s magic keeps acting up in fits and spurts. He begins shapeshifting small parts of himself without meaning to, becomes more uncanny, and Owen doesn’t know these people. He doesn’t know what it’ll take for them to break, to attack, to maim. He’s already lost Louis to the greed of paranoid men. He is not going to lose Ren.

As for the witchhood, Owen is ecstatic to learn that the guy he’s started to care about isn’t actually human. If Ren was human, Owen would have to confront his flawed ideas of morality, but he’s not! So it’s okay! Owen can live in denial a little while longer until I pull him out back to shoot him with the redemption gun.

Legs, as with the vampirism, takes it relatively in stride. Witches, Vampires and even Werewolves in this AU are based off of a whole bunch of folklore, which means that, functionally, witches and vampires aren’t all that different (as, in folklore, they’re pretty interchangeable). There are differences of course, but by now Legs is already familiar with magical tomes and shapeshifting and controlling the weather. Learning Ren can do what he does isn’t that surprising in light of all of that. Basically, “this may as well happen.”

I am literally begging to see what witch!ren and martyns interactions are like

They’re not actually that different from canon, I would say.

You’d think it would be, as Ren has someone (Owen) pre-oakhurst now, and him and Martyn are not at the place they were by episode 8, where they circumstances pushed them to the point where they could only fully trust one another. And it is different. The core, however, is about the same.

Ren views Martyn as a friend, as someone who makes him laugh and has a vested interest in helping the people around him. He’s young, and playful, and he makes Ren feel warm. He needs to be careful, though. This Ren is more cautious than his canon counterpart, where he (supposedly) had nothing to hide. He knows he’s a witch now. He has a lover. He has more to protect and in his experience, nobles don’t tend to take people like Ren (poor, defiant, magic) well. Martyn, though… he seems trustworthy. Ren wants to trust him. There’s something about him…

Martyn views Ren the same way. Ren’s funny, he’s kind, he’s welcoming and dramatic in a way that Martyn loves to lean into and hype up. He also wants to climb him like a tree, but we already know that from canon. (/silly)

(He’s strangely comforting. He lowers so many of Martyn’s walls without noticing. He may not know who Martyn is by birth, but he knows more about the core of him than anyone else Martyn has met so far, other than maybe Apo. It’s startling, to find himself being honest without meaning to. He doesn’t know what to do with that. What it could mean.)

(And if there’s something connecting them? A whisper of essence on the wind, some invisible tether that draws Martyn to this heavy place, to this strange man? Something familiar, like something he’s always known yet never met, something that sits warm and undiscovered in his own chest? Well. Surely he’s just imagining it. He really hopes he’s imagining it.)

Martyn’s… concerned, though.

Ren’s… roommate. Owen. There’s something about him that drives Martyn up the wall. Martyn recognizes a fellow liar when he sees one, and he doesn’t like when Owen pulls Ren aside to whisper something in his ear, or encourages Ren to keep his distance. He doesn’t like how controlling Owen feels.

(He also doesn’t like how much that feels like an excuse. How much Martyn sees himself reflected in the man’s eyes with how badly he also wants to keep Ren close and all to himself. Ren hates liars. Martyn’s just looking out for him.)
