Top 5 albums you've picked up while crate digging
it's sooooooo hard to narrow in on just five out of my entire collection so i'm going to go with a few recent acquisitions that i've stumbled upon in the wild that i've really been liking LOL
jacques dutronc, self-titled 1966 (also known as les play-boys, les cactus, and et moi, et moi, et moi)—picked this up as a mostly blind buy while shopping at amoeba LA about a month back. i've been somewhat familiar with dutronc for years (mostly due to his association with françoise hardy) but hadn't really listened to his stuff in much depth. it's a very fun album with an interesting combination of influences from yé-yé, psych, and garage rock. i'm glad i picked it up because i want to figure out how to work some of the songs into a set sometime soon!
steve reid ensemble, spirit walk—this was a total blind buy from the $5 bin at my local shop and was worth every cent! really solid contemporary free jazz, challenging but still very listenable
lindisfarne, nicely out of tune—i have loved the lindisfarne track "down" since i was in seventh grade and first heard it on pandora but never could get my hands on the album itself given the band was really only popular within folk-rock scenes in the UK; my local shop recently got in a used copy and i stumbled across it while going through the new arrivals and had to grab it immediately LOL
various artists, eccentric northern soul—numero group never misses with their compilations and when i saw this northern soul album on sale for ten bucks at amoeba LA this past month i knew i had to grab it immediately! northern soul is notoriously hard to find and expensive when you do even find it so it was nice to stumble across a solid comp from a label that i really love collecting from
father john misty, fear fun—some of FJM's stuff can be fairly hard to find because there haven't been recent represses and people don't always want to get rid of his stuff LOL; i found a used copy of fear fun in amoeba SF the other week for a totally reasonable price and was really happy as it's one i've been looking for for a while!
