Synopsis: David and Dani enjoy a quiet evening on the beach.

Her toes wiggled in the soft, velvet sand just beyond the hem of their blanket. The quiet tide rolling against the shore brought with it a soothing cadence, its rhythm drowning out the distant clamor of the ship's tourists gathering back from their day ashore.

Dani shifted slightly, resting her chin on his chest. "Can't we just slip away? Forget everything and stay here forever?"

His face glowed under the setting sun. His fingers drifted lazily through her long dark hair and down her spine. "What would we do with the rest of our lives?"

She settled back into his arms, a wistful sigh slipping from her upturned lips. "I could open a little cafe bakery in town. We turn your bartending skills into barista-ing ones."

"Not sure that's a word, but go on."

"We spend our nights lying on the beach like this. Eventually, we save up for a boat; my Sailor needs his ship. Maybe you could even charter tours along the coast for our patrons."

"Sounds peaceful."

"Yeah," she exhaled softly while drawing mindless shapes along his torso as she gazed over the open waters. "It really does."

Large, puffy, pink cotton candy clouds rolled across the sky, the edges fading to a brilliant purple against the darkening blue atmosphere. The final golden rays of the fading sun scattered among the clouds, painting strokes of peach and honey throughout the heavens—the ocean below, a canvas for this watercolor masterpiece.

"What about your inheritance?"

"I don't need it." The feathery touch of his calloused hands gliding gently down her arms left goosebumps and a pleasant tingle in its wake. She propped herself up on her elbows, looking to him. "I just need you."

"You're all that I need too, Babydoll." David wrapped her in his arms, drawing her fully into his embrace. He cradled her face, guiding her lips to his.

She climbed further onto him, straddling his hips, her tongue gently parting his lips. Their soft, delicate kisses lingered into twilight as the first star of the night glimmered in the darkening sky above.

The ship's horn boomed through the air, signaling the first warning that passengers should return.

Dani pulled back, stroking the stubble on his jaw. "If only we could stay...but my family needs me."

"One day, we'll go wherever you want." He brushed a kiss on her forehead, then helped her to her feet. He cleaned up the picnic area he had prepared for them; while she took one last look at the quickly fading colors on the horizon.

She started the summer lost and alone, feeling as though she wouldn't ever find meaningful love in the short time allotted, however, against all odds, she had. For now, she would return and continue to fight alongside her siblings, but when that was over, she was free to choose her own path with the man she loved. She took his hand, interlacing her fingers with his, and offered a gentle squeeze as they began walking back to their temporary home. The summer would soon come to an end, culminating in a wedding she had never expected, and yet, from there, their lives were a blank book for them to author together; the possibilities, much like the oceans, were endless. It was their story and she couldn't wait to pick up the pen and write their journey, one day at a time.

Morning, Sailor

Synopsis: A little drabble for one of my first Choices LI. I wish he got more love. This is for my forehead kiss series. It takes place the morning after their engagement. 

The bright morning sunlight peeking through the ship's windows warmed her cheek. She tossed gently, reaching for the covers to pull them over her head. A glimmering sparkle caught her focus, halting her progress. She held her hand in front of her face, turning the simple ring on her finger. It wasn’t lavish. It wasn't extravagant. It wasn’t off the pages of a bridal magazine. And yet, the traditional gold band with the single round cut stone in the center was absolutely perfect. 

Had it only been last night that he asked her? Had it only been weeks since their chance meeting? This summer had been a whirlwind, to say the least. 

When she heard her grandmother’s wishes, she never thought she would complete them. She had always been so careful, so calculating, analyzing every choice she made until she was certain she had made the right one. She had a plan for her life and for a while things were perfect. Then one day, everything fell apart, and she never saw it coming. Falling in love and getting married in a few months' time? It had seemed like an impossible feat, but now…

She chewed her lip, turning on her side to watch her sleeping fiancé. A quiet giggle slipped from her smiling lips. She couldn’t help it. For the first time in a long time, something felt right beyond all logic and reason. 

Stroking a strand of his chocolate-brown hair aside, she nuzzled into him. The scent of the sea surrounded them, but on him, it was different. The salty sea entangled with warm sunlight, soft sand, hints of cedar from where they lied on the beach the night before gazing at the stars, and sweet honey. She drew in another deep breath, letting it overwhelm her. He smelled of a home she never knew she was longing for and one she never wished to let go of.

She placed a kiss on his temple, in awe of how safe he had made her feel since their first meeting. She shifted up and brushed a kiss on her forehead as she caressed his cheek. She knew he was awake but apparently, he needed more encouragement.

Her lips hovered over his for a moment as she straddled his torso. She pulled his lower lip between her teeth before gently kissing him awake. “Good morning, Sailor.”

He reached up, cradling her face. “It is with you, baby doll.”

Her hand rested on his chest; she wiggled her finger. “We’re getting married,” her words were a whispered dream just for him.

“We’re getting married,” he reiterated, an excited grin blossoming on his features. He drew her back to him. “I love you.”

Her long, silky hair cascaded around him, shielding them from the outside world. Her lips lowered to his once more. She knew no matter where this path would take them, whether on land or across the oceans, as long as they were together, nothing would be too great an obstacle. He had found her when she was broken and without hope, and somehow he reminded her of all she was and all she could be. She had found her North Star, a light in the darkness, guiding her home.

Dani Rae – Rules of Engagement

I’ve never written these two before, which I guess is why the ROE MC is in the “forgettable” category for CMAW… I might need to change that! I really love them!

He paused for a moment, finding her near the bow of the ship. He had come to love the freedom he saw growing inside of her each day of their summer together. Right now, in the quiet stillness, beneath the morning twilight, while most everyone was still asleep, the world belonged to her.

David slipped his jacket over Dani’s shoulders, shielding her from the cool morning breeze.

“You’re not thinking of skipping out on me, are you?” David kissed her cheek, wrapping his arms around her. 

Dani leaned into his lips, shaking her head. “Never, Sailor! Soon, you’ll be stuck with me forever. You sure you’re ready for that? It’s not too late to change your mind.”

“I’ve never been more certain of anything, Baby Doll.” David’s warm words melted over her neck. “My love for you is as boundless as the sea and as neverending as the tides. You’re my compass, my way home – my home.”

She rested her head on her shoulder, relaxing into the safety of his strong arms, as the first lights of dawn crept over the horizon.

Make a Wish

This takes place sometime after their engagement but before their wedding.

A bright streak sailed across the dark night sky disappearing in the blink of an eye. 

Dani’s fingers drew lazily across his chest as they laid under the stars. The Perseid meteor shower had not quite hit its peak, but from their view of the quiet hillside on the outskirts of a small country town, the sky was breathtaking. 

She sighed lightly, attempting to follow the paths of fleeting light through the heavens.

“What’s on your mind?” David questioned, his fingers running through her long, dark, brown hair. 

“You,” she admitted, shifting her gaze toward her fiancé. 

His brow raised as a smirk grew on his lips. “Anything good?”

“Always!” Dani blushed, turning her reddened face into his chest. 

“That good?” He teased lifting her chin back up.

“Actually, I was thinking of the night you proposed.” She let the memories wash over her. It was a night much like this one, just the two of them surrounded by the quiet stillness of the night with only the sky to light their way. “You told me Perseus was your favorite constellation.”

David nodded as he listened to her, gently stroking her back. 

“You’re kind of my Perseus–my hero,” Dani insisted. Her fingers traced over her engagement ring. A few months earlier, she never would have thought she’d be there, at least not with him. “You’re the brave sailor who saved me from the sea, much like Perseus saved Andromeda. I went into this summer drowning. I could barely stay afloat with everything that happened. You found me. You reminded me of who I am and who I want to be. Now, when I look at the stars, these stars, and these meteors… I see you...I see us… they tell our story.”

David shifted under her, bringing her face closer to his. “Dani, you saved me too! I was set adrift tossing in the sea with no sense of direction. You are my anchor in the storm, my safety when the winds blow. And you’re my compass home. I love you more than you know.”

“I love you too!” Dani blinked back the tears in her eyes. Her lips drifted toward his, pulled by an unseen force, meeting softly at first, then more fervently. Her heart fluttered and her pulse quickened as he held her safely in his arms as the stars blinked above them. She wasn’t sure how long it had been when they finally broke apart, breathless. She knew only that nights like these would never truly end, not as long as they had each other. 

A string of meteors danced brightly across the sky disappearing as quickly as they had appeared. 

“Did you make a wish?” She asked softly.

The warmth of his smile radiated across his face. He brushed her hair behind her ear. “What more could I possibly have to wish for?”

She curled back into his chest, a little more snuggly this time as the stars continued their watch over them.
