Just lately I've recovered a bit of my older rate of Tumblr activity in the slight calm before giving my students their final exams, but I'm tired and off my game and not Tumblring at my best.

My post on Herschel Walker -like candidates had a bunch of typos and slightly botched sentence structures, and I was unable to find an old late-2016 post despite searching my archives in the exact right span of a few months and looking right at it (I found it this morning while looking for another post from around the same period and have added it in an edit).

I put "your" for "you're" in a post and got roundly teased for fulfilling a (supposed, but I've never heard of it) stereotype that mathematicians write sloppily or something. I certainly don't think this is true about mathematicians and would bet that I could count on one hand the number of times I've written "your" for "you're" in almost eight years of posting here.

One stereotype of mathematicians that I am aware of and I every-so-often satisfy is sloppiness with basic arithmetic. In an earlier post today, I wrote something about "during my nine (has it really been nine?!) years here", when in fact, no, it hasn't really been nine years here: late 2014 (when I first set up this blog) was eight years before late 2022. I corrected this in an edit, but the unedited version survives in a reblog.

Basic Arithmetic

The set of real numbers R has the following properties a+b = b+a R for a, b R  a+ 0 = 0 + a, the additive identity.

For each a ( 0) R, there exists b R such that ab = 1 where 1 is the multiplicative identity a*1 = 1*a = a.

Order for any two real numbers a, b R  only one of the following is true:

 a > b or

a = b or

a < b

 If a, b, c R and a > c, c > b then a > b

           If a, b, c R and a > b then a + c > b + c

If a, b, c R and a > b, if c > 0 then ac > bc

 From these properties, together with the deankind axiom all the familiar results for real numbers.

Eg Index Laws a^m a . a . a .... a, m IN

                       {          m times  }

           Extend to a^-m = 1/(am) = 1(a . a . a .... a) =               1/a . 1/a . 1/a .... 1/a

                                                           {          m times  }        {          m times  }

           Extend to a^(p/q), p, q Z

Eventually extend to a^-σ , σ R

 Absolute value – a ‘distance measure’ on R

|a| = {a, a 0

           -a, for a < 0

Theorem (properties of absolute values)

1.      |a| 0 for all a R, note  |a| = 0 if any only if a = 0

2.      |ab| = |a| * |b|, for all a, b R

Cases

(i)                 |ab| = ab = |a| |b|     ie ab > 0 for [(i) a, b > 0

(ii) a, b < 0

(ii)               |ab| = ab = (-a)(-b)

3.      |a|^2 = a^2

4.      |a+b| |a| + |b|, a, b R

Proof: If a+b<0 then |a + b| = -(a + b)

                                               = (-a) b),

Now – a |a|, for any a R

 If a + b > 0 then |a + b| = a + b

But a |a| and b |b|

|a + b| |a| + |b|

5.      |a – b| |a| - |b|, for any a, b  R

4) is a subset of an interval of the real number line.

[a, b] = {x^(R): a x b} – a closed interval.

Also have [a, b] and [a, b]

 Bounded sets: - A set S R is bounded above if thre is K R, such that K for all x  S

     S is said to be bounded below.

                 If there is k  R such that x  k for all x    S

                       S is bounded if it bounded above and below.

*The least upper bound (supremum) for a bounded set S R is K R such that K x for some x    S and any > 0

*The greatest lower bound (infinum) for is K R such that [ k x, x S

do you think rory ever pulled 'basic arithmetic" before aotd?? like he flaunted his medical knowledge to amy??? like whenever she got sick he insisted on treating her first then being like a total dick about being healthy????? and dismissing her talking her feelings about her head stuff??????? do you think he ever did this laura?????????????????

there are like three different things going on in this ask and i don’t feel emotionally equipped to deal with any of them.

1. the way he uses ‘basic arithmetic’ in this incredibly condescending way.......yeah i feel like he uses the word basic a lot....i bet he was a real DICK about her leaving school without going to uni, stuff like that.

2. oh he absolutely plays the “i’m a medical professional” card all the fucking time, no, excuse me, you decided to be a doctor because of the raggedy doctor, then dropped out and became a nurse with dreams of being a village gp. sit down and look at some ear infections.

3. he ABSOLUTELY dismisses her feelings about emotional things. like i don’t want to get into it. but he absolutely does. i’m angry again, bye bye.
