requested by @lukerycyja : could i get dream with soulmate red string of fate au? angst to fluff. so perhaps the reader wanting to cut the string after seeing herself not worthy.
warnings: self criticism/low self esteem
you never really paid much attention to the fact that you were bound to someone by one red string. sometimes you forgot that it even existed, and sometimes you would stare subconsciously at your finger, thinking about your soulmate, wondering if they were across the world or closer than you thought.
only you can see the string on your soulmates finger, and they can see yours. the string may never break apart by distance. it can get tangled and twisted but never torn. but if you or your beloved soulmate decide to cut the string yourself?
well, let’s just hope nobody ever has to do that.
you were on your sofa, your phone was brought up to your face, the light projecting onto your face as you mindlessly scrolled through most of your social medias
you got a facetime call from one of your closest friends. sapnap’s name lit up the screen and you happily accepted it.
“hey!” you greeted him enthusiastically, patting some of your hair down, trying to look the least bit presentable.
“hey! how are you?” he answered back, his face taking up the whole screen. you realised how much you missed having your best friend around just by his face.
there was a couple minutes of just catching up with him, talking about normal things and how everything was going. since he moved in with dream, you barely knew what he was doing anymore. however your conversation was interrupted by a familiar voice you heard in the background. sapnaps [other] best friend, dream. who you never actually interacted with before. he seemed like a decent dude to you though. sapnap loved him, so he had to be a nice guy, right?
“oh, actually, i don’t think you two have met, have you? sapnap questioned. “[y/n], this is clay,” he switched to the back camera, getting a full view of him in sight. you raised your eyebrows. damn, way more attractive than you expected. his eyes were a piercing green-hazel colour while messy blonde hair perfectly framed his face. he had a sheepish smile plastered on his face.
“hi clay,” you said, waving at him through the phone.
“hey [y/n],” he awkwardly responded, with the same actions as you.
but your breath hitched in your throat as you noticed a very specific detail; his pinky was laced with a thin red string
you lowered your hand slowly, the enthusiastic smile wiped off your face and filled with a little bit of fear. but you weren’t exactly subtle about it. clays eyes widened as he also recognised the hint of red of around your pinky. his expression visibly dropped. “oh my-“
you ran to the bathroom, breathing heavily. you stared at your reflection in the mirror, and then glanced down at your finger, observing the one which supposedly had the red string attached.
“no, no, no,” you muttered to yourself in disbelief. you stared again into the mirror. this wasn’t how it was supposed to go.
you were feeling overwhelmed, his face dropped so quickly upon seeing your string, too quickly, and he didn’t look happy. were you not what he expected? his face said it all, and you wouldn’t blame him. you started criticising every single detail about yourself.
“oh my god,” you whispered weakly, feeling defeated. you heard a call from the other room, it was probably sapnap again. you ignored it, too focused on your current situation. a thought ran across your mind, a thought you didn’t even think you would have: cut it.
still, you were ambivalent, that would be incredibly selfish.
you heard your phone ring again. rolling your eyes, annoyed and hurt, you decided to just pick it up, but it wasn’t sapnap. it was just an unknown number. you picked it up curiously, breathing in and out in a pattern to calm yourself.
the same dirty blonde boy appeared on your screen. you heart sped up and your finger automatically went to press the end call button again.
“did you see it? the string?” he asked you, rushing it out instantly, he sounded out of breath, as if he was also panicking behind the screens
you cleared your throat, containing yourself after the flare-up that just happened.
“uh-yeah, i did,” you said softly.
“so we’re soulmates, [y/n]” he said, stating the obvious.
there was an awkward silence between you two.
“you’re really pretty,” he said, catching you off guard. “way prettier than me,” he half-heartedly laughed. “i don’t know how i got someone like you as my soulmate,”
his words made you blush, you hoped your face wasn’t too pink on camera. “oh-uh, thank you?” feeling a little flustered now.
“i guess we should get to know each other, i mean i guess it was a given already since you’re also sapnaps best friend,” he said
you realised you had stopped shaking. he was just as nervous as you, you had read it all wrong.
“yeah, i think we should,” clay rubbed the back his neck, but you could see a relieved look on his face, which you mirrored. you spotted again the small string around his finger. smiling, you eyed your own finger, already thinking about where things could go from here with your soulmate.
