Daily fish fact #817
Golden fairy basslet!
Also known by the names golden basslet, golden Cuban basslet and Dejon’s basslet. They are a bit skittish, hiding away in their reef habitats — sometimes even hanging upside down on the underside of ledges or carefully perched on walls!
day 173, 18/07/24 - fish of the day is the sailfin queen (Pseudanthias pascalus)

New species of basslet from deep coral reefs collected at depths of 115–148 m in Micronesia, Pacific Ocean
The researchers have been exploring the mesophotic coral ecosystems (i.e. coral-reef habitats at depths of 30–150 m; also referred to as the “coral-reef twilight zone”) in the region for decades.
As a result, they have utilized advanced mixed-gas closed-circuit rebreather diving operations, which has led to the discovery of dozens of new species of fishes.
