I finished reading American Psycho finally. My main takeaways:

I feel as though the motif of Les Mis is important to the general themes of the story, but saying that it represents "class disparity" feels too shallow compared to how often it comes up

The yuppie culture thing doesn't feel super relevant to Patrick Bateman somehow

It seems a lot less ambiguous than the movie was, in my opinion? It's hard to say because it still IS ambiguous, but there's more evidence suggesting that he never killed anyone than the alternatives

It also feels like the repressed homosexuality narrative is far more obvious in the book. There's a case to be made that he was carrying on a relationship with Luis Carruthers unknowingly, and convincing himself it was actually him killing prostitutes etc

Continuing on the repressed homosexuality themes, he's obviously supposed to be, like, CLEARLY/visibly gay. At least to other men. Probably to characters like Evelyn as well.

I'm planning to do a movie watch while I highlight the verbatim passages in the book (as well as the paraphrased ones). There are a lot of scenes directly lifted from book to movie, but a surprising amount cut specific moments where Patrick acts like a total loser or fucks up tremendously.
