Batman #51 Review

The Wedding is off and Bane's plan to break the Bat.......... or some such nonsense has been fulfilled.  Now that nobody got what they wanted from the previous issue, let's jump into the exciting world of jury duty, where Bruce Wayne will have to decide whether or not Mr. Freeze is guilty of a crime......... Even though Bruce has a personal connection with both Batman and Mr. Freeze that is known by the public and would never be selected for jury duty.  Let's check it out.

Batman #51 things

Bruce has no inner monolouge. And except for the speaking of others he remains mostly verbally silent.

Bruce has stopped fighting crime and is having Dick stand in his place.

The one time we see actual emotion from Bruce is when a woman is joking about her husband. He excuses himself to the bathroom and rips the sink out of the wall and screams having a Batstyle Aggretsuko moment.

He is heart broken.

Batman #51

New Comic Wednesday means it’s time for the very first blog review~! This week’s review focuses on Batman 51. Written by Tom King, Art by Lee Weeks, and colors from Elizabeth Breitweiser.

Review and Spoilers featured under the cut.

This issue directly follows the very disappointing blow that DC Comics delivered to us in issue 50, featuring the Bat/Cat wedding of (my own personal) dreams. I have words on that issue, but that’s not what we are talking about today, so let’s dive in! Visuals & Story: I’m a big fan of the visuals throughout this entire issue. The composition does a phenomenal job highlighting Bruce and his sulking as he goes about the process of landing a seat on the Gotham City jury for the trial of Victor Fries. Expressions play a big role in this particular story as there isn’t as much action, that being said, I still find it very compelling and visually interesting to read. Thankfully it’s not a massive amount of text either. Nothing get’s my blood going like having to read paragraphs of 8pt font on glossy paper that I’m tying not to damage in anyways so that I may keep it for my children to inherit and pay for their college one day. Tell me with pictures!

My favorite thing about the issue is the coloring! Breitweiser uses a full color pallet and still manages to keep the mood sullen without darkening or taking away from the line art. Night vs day, interior vs exterior, it’s all reads very clearly without pulling the reader out with weird contrasting panels or things being over saturated - a perfect fit for a Batman book! I’m going to start looking for more things with her name on it to see what else she's been able to do with that silly ole color wheel~~

As I mentioned before, this issue follows directly after the didn’t-get-married-BS-wedding between Bruce and Selena in Batman 50. Bruce is a wreck. (Why can’t they just be happy!?) I hate to admit that I love it, but I do, because it means that he was written as if he had real feelings. The only unbelievable bit in the comic was when he rips a urinal from the wall in a public building after telling his fellow jurors he is going to the bathroom. I get it. I do. Passion, frustration, man feelings. But have you ever tried to rip something out of a wall? I get he is mad strong and does crazy cross-fit, but still. Also, I hate to think he would be so sloppy. You better pay for that Bruce! How did no one come to investigate? Why is this not all over the internet?!? Millionaire Playboy Throws Tantrum in Public Bathroom. I digress. The point is, he is a mess bubbling up below the surface trying to hold it together while he loses his mind in public at the trial where he believes, as Batman, he screwed up royally. Good. GREAT. 

Ratings: Overall 9.7/10 - Because I have unnecessary and problematic feelings about a urinal. Butts 1/10 - Obligatory butts because Dick Grayson does appear in this issue and you can’t not have butts when he is around. Chances of Picking Up the Next Issue: Honestly, pretty good.
