Hi! I went through your blog beforehand to see if someone had already asked this, so apologies if I missed a previous post you made on this subject. I like a lot of different multi-ships in the Merlin fandom, like Arwen, merthur, poly merarwen, etc. I also like Gwen/morgana. I was wondering what your general thoughts about Gwen/Morgana are? I like them, especially in the first few seasons. I did some thinking of my own about the potential fandom pitfalls there (mammy stereotypes, subservient character of color stereotypes etc, strong/aggressive black woman stereotypes - all pretty parallel to bad fan characterizations of arwen) and I think I’m well prepared to avoid them in my fanworks. Is there anything else you might think of to pay attention to? (Also: this isn’t abt fandom anti blackness, but what sort of tropes, plot devices, or settings would you like to see more often/ look forward to in fanworks, for Gwen/morgana or any ship involving Gwen? Bc I always like to hear what other ppl like!)
Thank you for your question.
I understand this question wasn't specifically about fandom racism or antiBlackness however, I feel it is important to point out how racism is tied into everything! Especially when it comes to interracial ships/couples.
It is important to always think about how racism, antiBlackness and bias comes into play when you are creating content and engaging in fandom.
The POC in the ship is generally looked over and ignored. They are hardly given a place in the ship despite the fact they are one half of the couple. Example: the white character is spoken about a lot more regarding their ship, more content is created about them rather than the POC.
In relation to this question and Morgwen, ensure to uplift Gwen!
Let Gwen be on the receiving end of the love and affection. In canon, she is always the one giving, not receiving. So in headcanons make it so Gwen is receiving love.
With Morgwen it is important to be careful about how you portray them if your headcanon is set in the later seasons. What Morgana did to Gwen is tied to antiBlack writing (kidnapping/torturing her etc).
In general, make sure Gwen, or any other character of color has a positive role in whatever you make. Headcanons can be fun and light hearted and can create a positive impact on the characters of color.
