Theoretical Lecture Studies: Storytelling:
This lecture focused on the influence of storytelling, and how inspiration for this can be found everywhere. For example this can be found in music, books, news, and media. At the start of the lecture we looked at the origins of storytelling, and the ideas we may have regarding this. Such as where did stories come from? And why are we so fascinated by them?
Another aspect we looked at was the affect of storytelling on the brain, for example the release of the neurotransmitter dopamine, which helps us to remember stories/events with greater accuracy.
We also looked at modern storytelling, through a storyteller called Ian Douglas, who tells stories at festivals. He describes the beauty of storytelling is in its simplicity, which helps to connect people.
Also within the lecture we looked at how we as individuals can tell a story, and the processes we can use, for example colour and type?
Theoretical Lecture Studies: Between Still and Moving Image & Exploring Future Trends:
This lecture was about the narratives which still and moving images can create, and the different ways in which this can be expressed. In this lecture I learnt that narrative plays a strong role in this, as this is what the audience picks up from the content.
In relation to exploring content from future trends we also looked at making content which moves, as this then provides more engagement for the audience. For example taking a static logo, and adding in a form of animation. We also looked at how we can explore the use of videos, or a series of pictures with music, which also adds a form of movement.
Another aspect we looked at was using drawing and illustration, and then animating this, which also adds an element of a handmade feel. The mood which sound creates was also touched upon, helping us to understand that music can be used to help the audience feel a type of way.
To all BCU viscom students currently battering (and being battered by) their dissertations, here's a message from Dr. Rumack #leslienielsen #airplane #drrumack #bcu #bcuviscom #viscom #illustratorsoninstagram #igers #igerartist #igerart #igersbirmingham #instaartist #instaart
We have all been given a six sided box to illustrate our narrative upon it is 30cm x 30cm. I am finding it difficult to start my box design so I have collected another piece of cardboard to test some ideas out first. I have initially started my experimentations using white acrylic paint as a base to develop my ideas further I am thinking of creating three dimensional lives to mount on the box by building the cardboard in layers or cutting pieces out. I have also had an idea of collage and ink or maybe just white paint and ink to illustrate the box. I am not yet clear on my ideas yet as you can see, so this is the start of my development stage of the box.
Practice In Action - Portrait and a 6 word narrative
This is a live project of “100s and1000′s” at the BMAG. Designed to encourage the younger generation and public to become creative thinkers, culminating an exhibition with an interactive workshop. My response within this project will encourage visitors to think from an alternative perspective.
The aim for the portrait piece is to reinterperet a painting, sculpture or any piece within the gallery as a portrait. Bringing it to life by exposing the narrative from within the image, as the outcome an A4 portrait as a high quality print upon cartridge paper. I will analyse the chosen art piece identifying a character that I will focus upon to develop my ideas and progress towards my alternative piece.
For my six word narrative I shall have a six sided box (30cm x 30cm) to tell a story in six words on each side of the box. A narrative developed by the portrait , analysing my selected piece and portrait created to build a story and bringing it to life. Incorporating typography which should be significant on all sides using the six words and I should compose a short narrative of 200 words maximum.
The final part of this live brief is the pop up shop. I shall create one book (Zine) plus six postcards which I have two weeks to produce to present in the Curson pop up shop for our pics to be for sale, the money going towards our next project.
