But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. James 1:22
Talk is cheap. So a common saying goes. Today's verse reminds us that hearing without applying what we hear is of little value. Good intentions are of little practical value. Jesus once told this story found in Matthew 21:28-30:
But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard.He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went. And he came to the second and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.
He afterward asked the crowd a question: Which of the sons did the father's will? The obvious answer is the one who SAID he would not, but did. Another common saying comes to mind: Actions speak louded than words. It is better to have action without words than words without action.
