Obviously Donna is my fave or I wouldn't be here but I legitimately think he's good for Cameron. Annoying and old fashioned at times but always there when she needs it and I think Donna is more similar to him than she realizes.

He absolutely has his moments, he sets firm boundaries with Cameron (!) in a way that Donna really couldn’t. But then he falls into doing that thing where he gets angry at and shames her feelings? Like in a way that isn’t helpful or constructive, and just seems controlling? Like she’s not allowed to have feelings that he doesn’t like? That’s really where he loses me.

As for similarities between Tom and Donna, now I’m thinking about Donna griping to Gordon at the end of season 3 about Tom, after the meeting, and...I feel like there is much to think about there. Donna and Gordon have good, professional, technical reasons to be aggravated by Tom’s presence and his naysayery, but the idea that Donna is partly annoyed because she’s also someone who wants to be partnered with Cameron but couldn’t/can’t make it work? That’s super intriguing to me. And it also mirrors Cameron and Gordon getting closer as they both became more alienated from Donna, and the contrast there is a lot to think about too!

I would never jump on people but I always thought the father bra episode was trying to show that she was bi? Not because they seemed in love just the timing of the episode

setting aside my extreme displeasure with that story and even if that was the intent, they never let her say so either way! and just look at darryl’s coming out for contrast -- he gets a whole number to assert “this is my specific identity and i am proud of it!!!” valencia never gets to have a single freaking LINE saying how she conceptualizes this new information about herself. it’s sloppy and out of line with the show’s mission to give nuance to people even though we’re inclined to sort them into certain boxes by having them communicate to us their hopes, dreams, and truths about themselves.

but more to my point, the culture of hording wlw characters based on their labels comes with a weird presupposition that lesbian characters don’t offer bisexual women someone with which to identify and vice versa. sure, it’s nice to say “this character is bisexual like me” or “this character is a lesbian like me” and certainly there are particularities about both identities that would be lovely to see in fiction. but the real problem lies in the fact that there are hardly any well-written, well-rounded wlw characters out there to dramatize the generalities of these identities -- let alone the particularities -- and the fact that we fight with each other over who “gets” which character takes away energy from us demanding more from the people who are leaving us starved in the first place.

Sure!

Okay, the concept of the movie is that you experience a couple from start to finish in opposite storytelling. The girl, (Cathy) begins from the breakup and tells the story backwards. The guy (Jamie) starts from where he fell for her and tells the story up to his breaking up with her.

It’s interesting because they have back and forth songs and you have to pay close attention to figure out when the song is taking place because it jumps a lot. It’s fascinating because the only duet they have is when they’re at the same point in the story.

It had so much potential as a musical and it’s so unique, it keeps you watching.

The problem was- the characters. Okay, first of all, this might just be me but I don’t like Anna Kendrick’s singing. It’s very sharp and slightly nasally, so it’s kind of hard on my ears when she holds long and/or high notes. That’s not to say she’s a bad singer because she’s not. It’s just... she wasn’t the right voice for this role. Her voice clashed a lot with Jeremy Jordan’s smooth, steady voice.

But alright, to the point. The characters were very.... one dimensional. The thing that makes a good story is making characters have a variety of layers, and these two didn’t. I couldn’t pinpoint when or rather why this relationship began to deteriorate. There was something mentioned about Jamie’s religion looking down on their relationship (Shiksa Goddess), but it’s not touched on after that. There’s more in regards to Jamie being consumed by work, but you don’t really see the effects of it besides Cathy complaining in one song (See, I’m Smiling).

If I Was asked to describe these characters, I’d say Jamie is a writer who was encouraging for his girlfriend until fame got to him and he had a weird personality change and cheated and left. Cathy is an aspiring actress that puts her boyfriend ahead of her and it creates a one-sided relationship which she complains about even when it’s over.

I don’t get that much from these characters, and I think it could’ve helped to add dialogue between scenes of these characters interacting with other characters who never get a chance to talk really. It’s all back and forth songs which gets frustrating as a viewer.

The characters had potential to relate to audiences, to be more than what the surface explanation is, but they lost the chance to develop because of the way the songs didn’t leave room for in between scenes.
