Yugi's Minor Monsters from the Death-T Arc
As I did for the "The Cards with Teeth, Parts 1 and 2" monsters, I've decided to fit some of the monsters that debuted in the Death-T arc into one post.
Note that not every Death-T monster is here. I've already covered "Dark Knight Gaia" and the "Exodia" cards. "Black Magician", as a very significant card in this project, will get his own post as well.
There's also another monster in this set that's sort of a special case, but I'll save that one for later.
So today you're all getting another 3-for-1 special!
Let's kick it off with the one that Konami gave the massive and unwieldy title of "Winged Dragon, Guardian of the Fortress #1". I call it "Fortress Guardian Wyvern".
Now, to be fair to them: this card does have a name that's quite lengthy regardless. From what I could tell, its name should be something like "Fortress-Guarding Winged Dragon", or "Fortress Guardian Winged Dragon".
It was also a little confusing because two of the characters that make up part of its name, 「翼竜」, are often used to mean 'pterodactyl' instead.
And so for a while that had me questioning: is this card meant to be "Fortress Guardian Pterodactyl"? Was this card originally supposed to be a Dinosaur-type, and not a Dragon-type as it is in the Konami and Bandai games?
Ultimately I decided that it is, in fact, a Dragon-type. (Or that it's not a Dinosaur-type, at least.) But the "Winged Dragon" part of its name just wouldn't comfortably fit on the top of my card, and attempting to cram it made it look just as bad as what Konami international went with.
So I compromised by calling it "Fortress Guardian Wyvern", as 'wyvern' both reflects the look of this monster and fits my card template a little better.
Last piece of trivia: this card's Death-T debut is the first time that we see a monster use the 'flying' ability. This mechanic persists through the Duelist Kingdom arc into the Battle City arc. And it's pretty quirky compared to its Magic: the Gathering inspiration of the same name.
Anyway, "Fortress Guardian Wyvern" continues to be used after Death-T. It's never a star player, but it is a reliable one, and for that it's rewarded with playing a key role in bringing about one of the most exciting moments in the climax of the Duelist Kingdom arc.
"Critter" and "Louise" waiting under the jump!
