22 and 39 for Kate, Bernie and Serena please!

22. Given a blank piece of paper, a pencil, and nothing to do, what would happen?

Kate never has 'nothing to do' but in spare moments she'll jot things down that she needs to remember to do at some point when the job isn't getting in the way

Bernie - look we've all seen the MRI scanner and the diary, she will doodle but it's images rather than patterns and likely just whatever is on her mind at the time

Serena has never been a doodler, and she gets frustrated with art because she can't do it as well as she would like (and suffers from 'if i'm not excellent at this then there's no point to it' syndrome) but now she will journal and write down streams of thoughts because it's something she has worked on in therapy

39. What recharges them when they’re feeling drained?

Kate enjoys time in her garden, being with her family and if she's at work but needs a few moments she'll take a walk around the tower walls, watching the tourists and reminding herself what it's all for, protecting Earth so things can carry on like this.

My 'Bernie is a runner' headcanon comes in strong with this one because she (well all three of these characters to some extent) becomes mentally drained more than physically drained. Especially when she was first out of the army and adjusting to the NHS and interacting with people again and figuring out the new rules etc, she goes for a run because that's a constant in her life. Putting one foot in front of the other is the same whether your in rainy SW England or the middle of a war zone.

It's easy to go straight to Shiraz for Serena and while it's true to an extent I think she craves time with people she loves. She may not ask for it because she doesn't want to pressure them, but she's getting better, especially now Bernie is there at the end of a tough day and she can sit quietly, each doing something different but just being *together*. Or she'll visit Jason (although with a bit of advance warning), or the Fletcher household.

I don’t actually see Serena as much of a pet person, given her job and lifestyle. But if she were, it would be a cat all the way. Soft, snuggly, independent, and full of attitude

And I’m not sure the canon answer counts as favorite candy bar. I actually see her loving really high quality dark chocolate, the kind you can only eat a small square of at a time

Yes! Ok this one is loosely inspired by ‘The Gauntlet’ by Ronald Welch and a lot inspired by one of my favourite castles.

Serena, grieving Elinor’s death and with nobody to help her through it, is pretty much forced to go on holiday. She’s on the beach one afternoon, just down from the castle, and while digging idly around in the pebbles she finds an old twist of metal. She slips it on her finger, drops off to sleep and wakes up to a woman wearing what looks like fancy dress...

She’s time travelled back to the twelfth century. Berenice, the lady of the castle, looks after her and Serena has to adjust to the new time period, wondering if she’ll ever get back to Holby - or even if she wants to.

So, I’ve never been a prolific writer before (depending on your definition of prolific I suppose I might not be now either) and I hadn’t actually written any fic for a good couple of years until the middle of this year. Previously I’ve been more into RP writing and was heavily into Sanctuary RP until about 2017 when I ran out of steam and work took over. But, this year with the pandemic and losing my job I found two positive things to cling to. One was the Golden Girls. Second was Berena and the rest is history. Now half the fics I’ve ever written were written in the last 4-5 months and are all Berena. 

So, other than a couple of chapters that I’ve added to a long-running and long-suffering Stargate fic, all my stories in 2020, and therefore all my top 5, are Berena.

My Top 5 are (in no particular order):

Perhaps, Love written for the Berena-TBC event during the summer. It’s a post-canon fix it fic where they get together and live happily ever after, eventually. It was my first Berena fic and my first fic for a few years so I was really pleased with how it turned out.

Autumn Leaves This was a little fic I wrote in about 3 hours in an attempt to use some autumn/halloween prompts. It’s about Bernie taking Serena away for her birthday and the surprise she has for her at the end. It ended up being really fluffy and romantic and I’m really pleased with how it turned out. Seems to be one of my more popular fics too, so that’s nice.

Winter Wonderland was my first Stocking Filler fic. It’s a ‘there’s only one bed’ combined with ‘there’s a snowstorm’ fic. I wasn’t sure if it would be original enough but apparently you can never get enough of - there was only one bed - so I worried for nothing, lol. I have another stocking filler fic in the works that I hope to finish this week, we shall see - I have cute plans for it!!

Mistletoe and Wine was my gift fic for Berena Secret Santa this year. It is a cute, domestic, fluffy one-shot of Serena and Bernie with Mulled Wine. I’ve never written a fic for a Secret Santa before so I was just hoping I could do the prompts justice. I was really happy with the dialogue I came up with and really felt I got the characters’ sense of humour throughout. I was also really happy with the title but then again I’m a dork XD

Finding a Way Home was my entry for the Holby Halloween event this year. I really enjoyed writing this fic. It was quite freeing to write them as a werewolf and vampire and I just loved being able to take these characters into a more fantasy based realm. I also liked writing a fic where Bernie needed the support of Serena, where she, and they, could have a happy ending (seems I’m all for happy endings with these two, lol)

Having not written anything during the year until August, I feel that getting 9 stories done (hopefully soon to be 10) was quite an achievement for me. I hope to write many more next year, imagination permitting!!

Fic writer questions for you :) Is there a trope you wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole? ; Describe your perfect writing conditions.

1. Yes, Major Character Death ... Whether it’d be reading it or even worse, writing. I can’t, I just can’t. Too much sadness and hurt for my fragile little heart.

2. In my bed, with either an episode of something or some music (or even a YT video) as background. i have to be calm enough as well, otherwise no words will come out.

Potential AUs for you: Bernie is a concert pianist, Serena is an opera singer, word has it they can't bear each other... ; Serena and Bernie are rival Amazon leaders (the mythical ladies, not the river/forest/online mess) ; Bernie is a sheep herder in some mountainous area, Serena gets lost hiking (probably Sian's or Fleur's fault) and their worlds are veeeeery different (but that woman *cannot* sit properly can she??)

Ok - I’m unfortunately the most unmusical person and to copy something a mutual once wrote, I also “need a very big bucket to carry a tune”. Nevertheless I love music and I love the idea of opera singers and pianists in a rivals to mutuals to lovers story.

(What does it say about me that I actually imagined Bernie as the singer and Serena as the pianist? Do I have to seek help? ^^)

1. Bernie started to play the piano at a very young age. While she started to play to appease her parents, she soon found that she actually liked the way she could express emotions without having to say a word.

2. Against the will of her parents - who think that everything related to the arts can be a lovely little hobby, but nothing more serious - she decided to make a life out of her music - putting some strain on her family ties with this.

3. Serena’s mother was a world renowned opera singer, having had engagements in all the famous opera houses before she fell ill and spent her final years in Paris, urging her daughter on to follow in her steps.

4. They both know about each other, but managed to avoid contact until they finally have engagements at the same house at the same time. Both of them despise the other for all the wrong reasons: Serena is jealous, because Bernie had the chance to find her own way without a parent to push her onto a career path. Bernie thinks Serena was privileged to come as far as she did, using the connections of her mother to further her career.

5. Being told to find a way to work with each other without upsetting the whole production, they have to spend extra time practicing together. Mutual respect forms and they secretly begin to like each other, but one day they nevertheless have a shouting match in a practice room. Such things can be fairly… unsettling. All the emotions. And a piano. Oh my… 

Might come back to the other ones later on! :) Thanks for giving me some ideas to think about, although if anyone wants to read something music related about Berena, I recommend turning to writers that are way more in tune with such a theme than I am. ^^
