I'm telling you, Gilmore Girls is a masterpiece of a show. It's one of those shows that you can watch over and over and keep noticing new things and a large part of that is the references. Just today I watched 3x02 for what was probably the 30th time since I first watched the show 15 years ago.... and I figured out a reference I had never caught before. I'd heard it but I guess I just assumed that Michel had named the rat that was running around the Independence Inn. Now after having watched the "Michael" biopic and really starting to go down the Michael Jackson discography rabbit hole... I finally get this reference. There's a 1972 film called "Ben" that is about a rat named Ben and Michael Jackson wrote the title song... which is a great song and I recommend everyone go listen to it (especially the live version) because Michael sings with all the passion and emotion in the world about a rat lol. But getting back to Gilmore Girls, some people act like they went overboard with the references but it really gave this show layers. It's like an onion, fam! 😆😉❤️

My (current!) Top Ten MJ songs !!
I watched this really cool, well made video by this small YouTuber so please consider watching/supporting!
There's already a flame war in the comments. MJ fans we gotta stop in fighting and/or just be more respectful if you're disagreeing with somebody's opinion on the SONGS, it would be so boring if we all had the same favs. Plus he's THE icon, he had a lot of versatile moments and was damn good at genre blending/switching.
Anyway I had such a good time yapping about our king in the comments, but I knew I had to share this comment/opinion piece on here.
Okay here's my big list! Keep in mind this usually always depends on my mood and could change like tomorrow 😅 Also this list isn't my top ten of all time or in order I'm just writing this for fun.
Tumblr exclusive Honorable interests:
ROCK WITH YOU. This was my first proper introduction to MJ waaay back in 1st grade when my school did a full MJ tribute from every single class & wow that was so cool?? Anyway, that was the first song my childhood bestie & I did for our class, and then we would be pausing and rewinding all the MTV marathons of his videos to learn every move. 🥹💜💜
BEN. One of the two kindergarten classes did this song at that concert and it was a real stand out for me. I believe it's my mama's most favorite due to it being about a rat, she loves animals so much & especially to reminisce about her rats. I didn't realize it was the theme song for the sequel to that rat killer movie (I thought it was just for the first, didn't realize there were more), the lore is crazy and I love it. Aside from those memories and the lore, I think it's one of young MJ's (if not the) best performances vocally. I sing it to my cat all the time and she loves it too.
Also random funny but this YouTube search is a mf HATE CRIME! I love pretending that Benson Boone is my personal enemy I'm in deep beef with, as a joke, but he's honestly starting to become inescapable to me and it's getting too real. Count your days MoonBoone.
10. IN THE CLOSET. I love how he made the video & song out of spite for Madona after they clashed after having 1 date together (I think she told him something like you could never make a sexy song/video lmaoo).
9. OFF THE WALL. it's been stuck in my head ever since I bought the vinyl on his birthday last year, 10/10 purchase.
8. REMEMBER THE TIME. Hits close to home rn that's all i gotta say 💔 actually the cats, Eddie Murphy & Magic Johson help that whole music video be one of the 🐐s
7. CHICAGO Timbaland + the other producers did such a good job updating the og versions of XSCAPE, they just all sound really dated when he needed an updated sound cuz he was the blueprint!!
6. WORKIN' DAY AND NIGHT. Another song I appreciate way more than I used to since hearing it on vinyl. And in this encomy, I gotta be especially since I spend so much on music 😂
5. WHO IS IT. Dangerous is my current favorite album & now that he's getting a lot of well deserved justice it just makes me cry knowing how much everyone around him made him feel rightfully paranoid asf. I relate a lot to his breakup & deep family issues.
4. A PLACE WITH NO NAME. Obviously the updated version, it sounds like the most MJ track he ever wrote if that makes sense. I love the escapism & how emotional the story is, yet it's still so danceable.
3. LEAVE ME ALONE. There's so much I could say about this but I just love how the sass he brings with this one, it helps me calm down whenever anyone is annoying tf outta me 🫠 Been playing it at least once a day everyday for sooo long now.
2. THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT US. Lots of artists don't go hard enough when they're taking a stance but MJ being so outspoken genuinely had and still has a positive impact on the world.
1. GIVE INTO ME. I don't know how tf but I only ever heard the song covered by Three Days Grace, I was absolutely shocked when I found out it was an MJ song. It's such an intense song, I live for the drama and that guitar solo from Slash is just WOW every damn time. I was soooo obsessed with Slash in high school, and he's still in at least my top 5 most goated guitarists.
Thanks if anyone took the time to read! I'd to into more detail but I'll save that for attempting the same challenge the YouTube video did for a way more definitive way to sort through such an amazing catalogue.
Friendly reminder that it was NOT a top MJ songs ever list for me, this is just my top 10 to listen to rn! It was fun & super hard to pick. Also this is definitely not in order that would be too hard rn 😭
Unironically, Willard is probably one of my favorite franchises. It's not only because it resonated with me so hard as soon as I found it, seeing myself in Willard in a very spefifically autistic way. It's just a perfectly obscure yet pop culture that it's in a perfect middle ground where some people know about it but no one is really annoying about it y'know? I'm usually the only one to talk about it in my everyday life, usually people just know it as the rat movie but they don't usually get it.
Usually when I get into a movie and I learn it has a book based off of it I immediately have to get my hands on it and by far Ratman's Notebooks had to be one of the best (with Carnosaur being the worst.) It highlights everything about Willard as a character I love and his descent into becoming worse and worse until his death. I especially love how every single movie seems to be adapting it in its own way which is something that I find myself loving about this franchise. 1971 is probably the best adaptation, especially in the garden scenes which were sorely missed in 2003. 2003 adapts the dog scene and the tire scene the best and adds a nice gothic atmosphere which isn't Willard in my opinion but it's still a nice breath of fresh air. Ben 1972 is most interesting as its a sequel to the story but it still has its own adaptation of the store scene and has a fantastic interpretation of the rat hunt.
Even the songs about this franchise are great, Willard! by Will Wood is something that has definitely got a ton of neurodivergent teens into this over 50 year old rat madness. It's more than just that though, it focuses on Willard and Socrates' friendship which is something that was greatly improved in the 2003 movie which makes the song incredibly heartbreaking.
Ben's Song was made for the second movie by kid Michael Jackson which makes me incredibly sad that they just didn't get him to play the kid in the film. This song is a focus on Ben and Drew's friendship and has the implied acknowledgement of Ben's abandonment by Willard. It and Ben 1972 as a movie is just such a nice end to Ben's character, I kinda love the open ended ending looking back on it. Did Drew live through his heart surgery? Did Ben grow old and die happy in the arms of his best friend? No one knows! I like to think Ben lived long and happy with Drew, as do probably most people.
Speaking of actors, even if I prefer Bruce Davison as Willard I do really think Chrispen Glover did a good job. Even Lee Montgomery did pretty good as Drew, he was charming in a way. I do think Chrispen is too obvious as the Ratman as the entire point was no one expects it to be Willard but that's okay, that goes with his freak charm I guess. I really wish we could see another adaptation of Willard, particularly one that finally involves the rat mask because we haven't seen it adapted on screen at all and I think its a very iconic part of the book its on the cover for a reason.
A new Willard adaptation would do great as a tv show, adapting all the rat shenanigans from the book every episode in-between his office life. I don't know anyone who would be good at playing Willard himself but I vote for Matthew Lillard to take a crack at Mr Martin as he's too old play the ratman himself.
willwoodtober day 5(?): Draw a rat
