BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War - The Calamity episode 2 review

The beginning scene with the school trip (?) was gorgeous in my mind. Talk about animators really giving their all! Not to mention, did anyone notice that the flower Orihime was comparing Ichigo appears at the ending? Just a neat little detail. I'm not sure what that flower is called, even though I'm quite sure it actually exists in real life, but I'm curious if there is symbolism beyond what Orihime thought about. Also, another neat detail was that before the opening song started, we see two of them which heavily references to the upcoming moment when Orihime is cheering over the fact that she can finally protect Ichigo. It was good foreshadowing and personally made me very happy that we get to see Orihime has grown so much. She doesn't need protection anymore, but can also protect. Good for her!

As a side note, I'm not sure if the animators animated Ichigo's reiatsu on purpose, golden yellow like Orihime's powers or not, but considering everything...Yeah, I don't believe that was a coincidence.

Okay, Yhwach, all but claiming to be Ichigo's father or at least his maker made me think back to how Aizen spouted at some point in the past, he all but made Ichigo. I couldn't help but wonder how exactly it is. We all know Ichigo is all but mega-hybrid, and there have been cooks all but making him. It truly makes one question, if not for one of them, would Ichigo still be the mega hybrid he is or not? But even so, the fact that he "rebelled" against Yhwach about the fact that he isn't his father was sweet. No matter who had their hands on making Ichigo, in the end, what matters is what he believes. Who he chooses to be his family. (Yeah, I know it's ironic, because in this case Isshin is Ichigo's blood-related father, but I couldn't help but notice this moment kind of touched that family trope.)

It was also stupid for Yhwach to bring up Ichigo's mother. I'm pretty sure he knew if he brought up Masaki in such a tactless manner, Ichigo would get extremely furious. Or maybe that was his goal? Before that, Ichigo had been pretty cool, but the moment Yhwach mocked Masaki, Ichigo went mad. After all, he wanted Ichigo to expend all his power just to consume him. Which brings the question: why? Yhwach has Almighty and Soul King's powers (?), so why does he also needs top of that all Ichigo's? Greediness? Or isn't that all enough? Or maybe Yhwach wants to play it safe and ensure that by consuming Ichigo (what, are you going to eat him?), there won't be anyone to challenge him?

Ironically, this made me think of Aizen again and, in extension, Urahara...how everybody wants Ichigo's powers, but is there anyone who wants his heart? (Yeah, that's a reference to certain other anime.)

Moving on to Askin against Urahara! I think everybody has been waiting to see Urahara's Bankai animated and it didn't disappoint. Manga readers already knew somewhat what to expect, but there were still some details that came out better in animated form (at least in my mind). The fact that Urahara's Bankai was basically a huge puppet woman was one of them. In the manga, she looked like a huge woman. Also, the fact that she crept behind a cloth? Cool additional detail. Not to mention how it showcased better how Urahara moved in the air. While in the manga, there were parts of his stitch path; now it was clearer.

This all made me, however, wonder if Urahara is somehow connected to Senjumaru. After all, Senjumaru is "Great Weave Guard", and her Bankai literally deals with making a cloth. Not talking about her other abilities that are related to making clothes. While one could argue stitches aren't related to that, it's still pretty close. You've to learn how to make stitches before you learn how to make clothes. There is also that, both are inventors (and shady ones). Then again, Urahara's stitches could be medical-related, as we literally see him (Kannon-Biraki Benihime Aratame) stitching himself up when he takes damage. Basically, mending wounds. Ironically, the same technique can be used in reverse... Where we got to that, I literally flinched when Askin used his Gift Ring on Urahara's eye. I've never liked anything with piercing eyes. There is also that, when Urahara used his Bankai against Askin, it made me wonder why his wounds looked like they were...empty? Shouldn't we have seen some inside parts when those got cut?

One thing that annoys me greatly in any media is when a person is killed in such a way that they should drop like a fly, but instead break into a monologue. I was half expecting Grimmjow to kick Askin's head off when he just kept going on, even though he had ripped his heart... Write about persistant opponent.

Before Urahara collapsed and stated he would leave everything to Kurosaki-san and Kuchiki-san, and then everybody, it struck me somewhat odd. I believe in this last arc, it has been very clear that shinigami are their own group, while Ichigo's group is his own. Even in the Soul Society arc and Fullbringer arc, it didn't feel as dividing as it has felt in this. It feels like Rukia (and Renji) aren't really a part of Ichigo's group anymore. Like, yes, they're still friends, but not anymore the group. So, Urahara's statement felt very odd. Before, it would have made sense as Ichigo and Rukia were a very close team and basically the face of their group, but things have shifted. I'm not sure if it's to foreshadow the future that I know as a manga reader, but this moment always struck me as odd to me. The fact that Urahara added "everyone" hardly helped.

Jugram's Almighty wasn't in the manga. In fact, it was something that Kubo himself designed, which I'm glad about, as it looks very cool! Not to mention, Uryuu gets his own Almighty opponent, which is parallel to Ichigo's fight against Yhwach. I can't wait to see if there will be more parallels and how things will pan out, as it's obvious the anime is adding more details~.
