A gorgeous, affecting film that only errs when it tells (in the occasionally overwrought narration) instead of shows. The scenery is of course arresting (can the French alps not be?) but the images and scenarios prior to the transhumance are provocative and full of meaning, too - in particular, the consequences of the slammed door and the constant juxtaposition of beauty and brutality.
