Mirror, mirror on the ground...: The amphibious Beriev 12 was developed by the USSR as maritime patrol aircraft, but it is now also used by Russia as a waterbomber to fight forest fires that are no less frequent in the Siberian tundra than in North American and Alaskan forests.
An estimated total of 150 units of the type hardly known outside Russia were built between 1964 and 1973, and by 2008 it was estimated that only about nine of them were still in use, all of them in the firebomber role. There are however reports from 2022 stating that Beriev 12s were seen on patrol and reconnaissance flights along the Crimean coast, indicating that due to the Ukraine war the Russian Navy might have returned some of the 12 Beriev 12 to service that it still had listed as active fleet members in 2005.
