Y'know, regarding characters I hope aren't dead...

Carmine.

I know that Before the Dawn ended with her getting buried under rubble that killed her compatriots, and with Bertilak staying behind to beat her to death on the off chance that she survived THAT, but I'd LOVE for her to survive, because the similarities between her and the person Emerald used to be (deeply devoted to someone who seems to only consider her a tool to be discarded when convenient) are extremely interesting.

And also because Carmine is, similar to Jax, a rather deep character the fandom wrote off as "pure evil with no redeeming qualities" when like... She's probably the second-least malicious member of the Crown, behind only Umber. Seriously, TV Tropes unironically calls her more evil than BERTILAK! (I'm guessing it's a mix between racism and misogyny.)

(Actually, speaking of Bertilak, if they MUST bring him back in Volume 10 I hope it's relegated to a flashback where Carmine kills him before he can even lay a finger on her. It's what she deserves for all the crap he put her through.)

Oh yeah, I can definitely agree with you on Carmine.

Honestly, I’m hoping we end up seeing both Carmine and Bertilak make a return in the Vacuo arc, as I imagine they could each have some pretty interesting stuff to do.

For example, what if we saw the two end up doing an ironic reversal of their roles in Before the Dawn?

Like Teams CFVY and SSSN are surprised to find Bertilak working for the Crown again even after he seemingly split with them by the end of BTD, and assume that he must be back under Jax’s indoctrination. Except it turns out that Bertilak isn’t being mind-controlled…

Because he’s ACTUALLY working for Tyrian now, who quietly recruited him to help backstab Jax and Gil once they have the relic. After which, Tyrian of course plans to kill Bertilak too. Basically demonstrating how Bertilak’s generally amoral, ‘I fight for the strongest side/whoever pays me more’ mentality actually makes him a VERY easily manipulated stooge for Salem’s crew.

By contrast, whereas Bertilak has gone back to working with the bad guys, what if Carmine is actually the one to turn coat and join the heroes? Because she can actually see how much Jax is being manipulated and played by Tyrian and where all this business working with Salem is probably going to lead. Like you said, Carmine has some pretty notable parallels to Emerald.

Also, staunch loyalty to a cause/figures conflicting with what she knows is right? From someone originally from Atlas? Sounds like some strong parallels to Winter as well.

Hey peeps!

Here are my designs for Carmine Esclados & Bertilak Celadon!

Ever since I saw Carmine’s official design I’ve wanted to redo it, because her original design is a crime against humanity and it’s one of the worst things I’ve ever seen

So I redid Carmine using her description in the book, and figured I’d do Bertilak, too, since the poor guy got literally nothing after the book was published

I really wanted to lean into both of their allusions to the Red Knights & the Green Knight respectively, so I gave them (specifically Carmine) a bunch of different armor pieces, and now they kinda match with their silver colors, albeit Bertilak’s is rusted

I also wanted to highlight them being described as total opposites outfit-wise, since Bertilak is described to not even look like a Huntsman because of his outfit, whereas Carmine is clocked as a Huntress with one glance from Coco

Anygay, that’s them <3

I guess I’ll do Team SSSNN next, but that’ll be after I finish reading Before the Dawn lol

This dialogue is something I’ve always thought about. And after thinking on it, I wonder if Bertilak Celadon realized to some capacity the existence of the Ozluminati.

And I wonder what Oz’s actions must look like to outsiders. You see these teams get special treatment from the headmasters...and not just being selected for certain missions, but also receiving special priviledges. As Raven stated...

“-Turning a blind whenever we happened to break the rules and get into more trouble should’ve.”

And how would that make you feel? Just because they’re “A great team” they get let off the hook all the time. And yet, you must always pay the piper for your misconduct. Wouldn’t that make you angry and resentful?

Carmine deserved better than being relegated to a spin off duology and getting beaten to death by a racist thug off page.

Bertilak Celadon deserved worse and honestly should not have gotten a redemption arc.

Oobleck: Im not exactly a man of action. Besides, fighting isn't the only thing hunters and huntresses do. We look to see where settlements have failed and try to prevent it from happening again.

Weiss: This is going to be a long trip…

Blake: I hope Yang’s training isnt as boring.

Carmine: And pass up a chance on a bounty? Hell no. Look, fighting grimm is fun and all, but there's no thrill like chasing a criminal on the loose.

Bertilak: There's no changing her mind on this one.

Yang: If you're sure...

Bertilak: *looking up the bounty* Of course its a faunus. Those people are always up to something…

Yang: *frowning* Maybe they're innocent.

Carmine: *accepting the job* Doesn't matter to me as long as we're paid. Now, lets go. Looks like they were last seen at Gossan. We'll need to head there and gather more information.

Bertilak: *grinning and walking off* I hope they put up a fight.

"Who do you serve?" Picking sides in the war

Bertilak Celadon said, “You think your headmasters and professors are model Huntsmen? They’re worse than all the rest of us. You want to know why I barely graduated? I was tired of being used as a tool.”

“You’re still a tool,” Fox said.

I love this exchange from After The Fall. Fox has such a mouth.

But what makes it endure in my mind is how deep it goes.

Fox may have meant the recent colloquial use of the word "tool", but it still works with the exact meaning that Bertilak himself used. Because as a henchman, Bertilak is very much a tool of someone else's agenda.

Indeed, he is more of a tool to Crown than he would have been to the Huntsman academy headmasters, because at least the headmasters' agenda is Humanity First, which should benefit Bertilak as a human being. But someone like Crown probably discards tools after they outlive their usefulness, just like Cinder, Salem, and even rabenmutter Raven Branwen.

Raven thinks she attained freedom from the shadow war, but only because she makes herself ignore how she's actually helping Salem destroy the world, one village at a time. She could have worked with Ozpin to protect the world without ever putting her life on the line, simply by living a productive and law-abiding life in any city. (Her Semblance in particular would have let her make a fortune in the international transportation industry.)

Salem's war doesn't allow for neutral parties. If you promote human kind's prosperity, you're one of Ozpin's allies. If you introduce more entropy into the system, you're one of Salem's tools. There's no third option.

The song "This Time" hammers this idea over and over. There's no place to escape, and no options but to fight or die.

Raven deluded herself into thinking she'd picked anything but slow death by spending her days strangling the only world that would have accepted her.

Like her, Bertilak allowed himself to be seduced by thoughts of personal gain. He fancies himself his own master, risking his life only for his own benefit... by doing the dangerous and dirty work of someone else, who benefits from the risks Bertilak takes, regardless of whether Bertilak lives or dies. Bertilak rejected the people who would have helped him, to side with the people who only want to use him.
