The Ghost Who Is Still Alive

The Ghost Who Is Still Alive (Beth Crowley)
I didn’t know any better/Thought that I was being saved/I let him take my hand/As he led me in/To a different kind of cage
"So Beth Crowley actually writes all (at least almost all) of her songs based on books or book characters and this one is specifically based on V.E. Shwab's "The Invisible Life of Addie Larue". I haven't read that book but thought that was important context. This song fucks me up because I hardcore project it onto a character, Abigail Hobbs, from my favorite show, NBC Hannibal. MAJOR SHOW SPOILERS AHEAD Her father is a cannibalistic serial killer and his mo is girls that look exactly like her. He's the first big killer of the week that's encountered in the show, and while trying to be captured/investigated by the main character FBI agent Will Graham and consulting psychiatrist (and other cannibalistic serial killer) Hannibal Lecter, the father kills his wife and slits Abigail's throat before Will shoots him down, so as to say if he couldn't have her then no one could. Abigail does survive but of course ends up in the hospital for a long recovery, barely saved by Hannibal, but when she wakes up, she finds herself under scrutiny of Jack Crawford, head of department Will works for, who is accusing her of helping with her father's murders. Hannibal creates his grand scheme here, where he creates a safe place in his home/office for Abigail to run away to because he's implied he cares for her as he was the doctor who saved her life, but also he was the man who set her father on his rampage that made him try to kill her. Abigail realizes this, and she becomes a pawn... So all in all the song really fucks me up for Abigail. The first verse is about her putting her faith in Hannibal only to realize that he's the man who set her father in a killing rage against her, and about the loneliness she's feeling...She truly was, at least for a time, The Ghost Who Was Still Alive"

Now don't leave it there, just give it a chance/If only I'd forget you after one last dance/But you're everywhere, yes you are/In every melody and in every little scar/Yes you are, you are, love
“The vocals alone fuck me up a lot, there’s just something about the intonation and sound that makes it really neat. The high notes in some places are just so good. The general theme of the song to me is it kind of starts out with this relationship that seems pretty chill and then as you get further and further into the song you realize hey actually it’s a little bit fucked up actually, and I think that’s neat. The way the music builds up through the song is also so good. Overall a banger of a song that is just so good.”

Tempting Fate
I haven't seen anyone screaming about Beth Crowley's song here? Have I been AFK from the Patrochilles fandom for too long? Did I miss it?
Listen and cry with me!
Pride goes before the fall you're going to lose it all
I imagine Patroclus whispering this to Achilles while he sleeps.
tempting fate (beth crowley) • the night we met (lord huron) • just a man (epic - the musical) • can’t catch me now (olivia rodrigo)

Song that gives me Rayla post through the moon vibes:
Rayla: I know I'm different
Than what you expected
But I've been playing a role
It's time that you know the truth
Rayla: You may not want me anymore
I'm not what you've been looking for
But under these pieces and parts, is a beautiful heart and it loves you
Rayla: So meet me at midnight
Find me by moonlight
I've been waiting for so long
To feel like I'm whole
Rayla: Always told what to believe
Now nothing is quite what it seemed
It's a battle of head versus heart
Can't tell them apart like before
Rayla: More than what you see
Please don't define me
This is bigger than you and I
So give me a chance and meet me at midnight
Rayla: The fog starts to lift
Is my mind playing tricks
'Cause you look like home
But I know this real
I trust what I feel
That neither of us has to be alone
We don't have to be alone
Rayla: But I know this real
I trust what I feel
That neither of us has to be alone
We don't have to be alone

This song makes me think of these two so much, honestly. I feel like there's definitely lines that make it sound more like a romance, but Idk, there's something about the vibe of it. So here's a deeper analysis of the lyrics.
"You fascinated me Cloaked in shadows and secrecy The beauty of a broken angel"
So the use of the word angel here is one of those things that makes me go like, yeah, this seems like it was intended as a romance. But that aside - the moment Rayla moved in with Runaan and Ethari it was Runaan she was fascinated with, because he was keeping secrets from her, going out all night and sleeping through the day.
"I ventured carefully Afraid of what you thought I'd be But pretty soon, I was entangled"
This one vibes more from Runaan's perspective than Rayla's, like it's the reason he kept his secrets and tried to hide his job from her, afraid she'd think he was a monster for it. It didn't take long for her to figure him out, though, and it didn't take long for him to start getting attached to her, either.
"You take me by the hand I question who I am"
This one could go either way, they both question themselves so much with each other. Rayla questioned if she was the sort of person who could do anything to protect her family, and initially, concluded that she was. Runaan questioned if he was willing to continue doing his bloody work, if it was really protecting anyone, and it was Ethari who convinced him it was at first.
"Teach me how to fight"
"Teach me how to be an assassin"
"I'll show you how to win"
"We can end the cycle."
"You're my mortal flaw"
Wanting to impress him led her to lie about failing to kill Marcos, which condemned their whole mission
"And I'm your fatal sin"
Runaan pulled her off the mission and went in without her, so that he would die and she wouldn't, and then suffered in a realm beyond death for two years over what he did to her.
"Let me feel the sting The pain The burn Under my skin"
The shame of "failing" as an assassin even though she ended up saving the world, along with the very literal pain of her wrist binding. Or, to take it back to the very beginning, the sting of the nettles she fell into following him to work.
"Put me to the test I'll prove that I'm strong"
Basically everything Rayla does early on is driven by this need to prove herself, especially with regards to Runaan and his teachings.
"Won't let myself believe That what we feel is wrong"
They never actually claimed each other as father and daughter before Runaan died/was coined, these lines could be about her coming to terms with how she'd seen him as a father figure for years before her biological parents disappeared.
"I finally see what You knew was inside me All along That behind this soft exterior Lies a warrior"
The way Ethari and Runaan both saw the strength in Rayla from a young age, the whole reason Runaan agreed to train her, because he saw her drive to protect and that was the only way he knew how to teach her.
"My memory refused To separate the lies from truth And search the past My mind created"
Something about how Rayla remembers being ordered to kill Marcos, in her flashback, but in the initial portrayal we see her volunteer and Runaan seem almost startled by it.
"I kept on pushing through Standing resolute which you In equal measure Loved and hated"
"I can do it!" "You aren't ready." "I bound myself!" "You will stay here, out of the way. If we are not back by sunrise, go home."
"You take me by the hand I'm seeing who I am"
The confrontation on the battlements in Katolis, anyone? Rayla realizing she's the sort of person who would sacrifice herself, not others, who will fight even her mentor and father for what she feels is right.
"Teach me how to fight I'll show you how to win You're my mortal flaw And I'm your fatal sin Let me feel the sting The pain The burn Under my skin
Put me to the test I'll prove that I'm strong Won't let myself believe That what we feel is wrong I finally see what You knew was inside me All along That behind this soft exterior Lies a warrior Lies a warrior"
I went over all these already.
"You take me by the hand I'm sure of who I am"
The moment she takes his hand in the coin realm and draws him back to himself, affirming that she's figured out who she is, and she knows who he is, and that she loves him as much as he loves her even though they never quantified it before.
"Teach me how to fight I'll show you how to win You're my mortal flaw And I'm your fatal sin Let me feel the sting The pain The burn Under my skin
Put me to the test I'll prove that I'm strong Won't let myself believe That what we feel is wrong I finally see what You knew was inside me All along That behind this soft exterior Lies a warrior Ohh"
"The pictures come to life Wake in the dead of night"
The vision Rayla had of Viren being alive, maybe? And how it led her to find out about the coins? I'm not connecting these quite as strongly.
"Open my eyes I must be dreaming Clutch my pillow tight Brace myself for the fight"
Rayla going into the coin realm to find Runaan, and then letting her other parents go, and turning to fight him again.
"I've heard that seeing Is believing"
Runaan's eventual revival, thanks to Rayla and Callum's efforts with the quasar diamond.
