"Ugh I'm about to cut you!" (Y/n) threatened her hair, when the failed attempt at a tight bun fell apart. "You have lovely hair lass, don't cut it." One of the dwarfs called out, chuckling when she sighed in frustration. "It'd be so much easier to deal with if I just cut it all off." (Y/n) grumbled attempting to pull it up again. "If I could braid hair that would be great, especially if I could braid my own stupid hair." She added angrily tossing her hair over her shoulder with a huff, temporarily giving up on it. The dwarfs chuckled at her, while the hobbit looked on in thought. "I could braid it for you." Bilbo offered in a quiet tone, moving to sit beside (Y/n) with his pipe in hand. "Really!?" (Y/n) beamed at him, practically bouncing in her seat, eager to not have to fiddle with it herself any longer. "Of course." Bilbo smiled up at her, placing his pipe between his teeth as (Y/n) moved to sit on the forest floor in front of him. The log he was perched upon giving him better access to her hair, now that she sat a little ways below him. "Do whatever you want with it." (Y/n) hummed back at him, not caring about what her hair looked like anymore just desperately wanting it out of her face. "Right." Bilbo murmured back slowly running his fingers through her hair to remove any tangles, puffing at his pipe as he worked.
All the while (Y/n) sat there in content with her eyes closed, simply enjoying the feeling of someone toying with her hair. And the dwarfs watched on with wide eyes, surprise etched deeply into each of their faces. But neither Bilbo or (Y/n) noticed their stunned expressions. By the time Bilbo had finished most of the dwarfs had diverted their attention, several of the younger dwarfs finding it hard to look away. "All right, I've finished." Bilbo hummed leaning back to look at his work with a pleased smile. "Thank you Bilbo, you're amazing." (Y/n) gushed as she hugged the hobbit tightly, making the poor man blush like mad. "You're welcome (Y/n), it was my pleasure." Bilbo muttered meekly, his eyes following her subconsciously when she walked away. "I didn't know you had it in you." Bofur smacked Bilbo on the back with a wide smile on his face, his words confusing Bilbo. "What?" Bilbo frowned in confusion, looking to the dwarf for an explanation. "Asking (Y/n) to marry you in front of the entire company." Bofur chuckled. "I beg your pardon?" Bilbo's eyes were wide, as he stammered in confusion. "A-ask (Y/n) to m-marry m-me?" Bofur sat down beside Bilbo. "In dwarven culture, braiding someone's hair like that is a sign of engagement." Bofur explained seriously. "I-I didn't k-know that." Bilbo stuttered, his ears turning pink. "Well as far as we're all concerned, you two are engaged now." Bofur mused with a grin looking to (Y/n) who was obvious to the whole ordeal. "Oh dear." Bilbo muttered before fainting, causing the dwarfs to burst into laughter while (Y/n) rushed to his side, concern filling her heart for the little hobbit.
