Emptying my phone of old photos: An odd Bill Nelson compilation UK 7-inch set from the early 80s that I picked up at a record fair for $5. Nelson was an interesting guy—too quirky for pop, he created a string of new wave songs built around making his guitar bleat the strangest noises. He was really into sounds, and you can hear him experimenting and working out how to expand what he could do with the electric guitar I n a changing musical landscape that was shifting whole-hog to the synth. All of this paved the way to his brief breakthrough—the brilliant guitar/synth explosion of “Flaming Desire,” which ironically isn’t in this set, though its building blocks are readily evident, especially on the B-Sides.
